Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has alerted the conspiracy theorists on the final day of the Premier League season by admitting, in an expression of northern solidarity, that he wants Manchester United to win the title.

It is Wigan who hold the key to the destination of the title on Sunday as if they can hold United to a draw then Chelsea only need to beat Bolton on home turf to collect a third league trophy in four years.

Former Old Trafford colleagues Sir Alex Ferguson and Steve Bruce have been at pains to emphasise that there is no room for sentiment as the finale of the season approaches but there have been suggestions that Wigan will not provide the sternest of tests for their local neighbours.

Revealing his unhappiness with Roman Abramovich’s conduct during a previous visit to The JJB Stadium, Latics chairman Whelan claims the champagne will be ready for United and that he hopes the trophy will be coming north once more.

“I’m not a Manchester United fan but I want them to beat the southerners any time,” said Whelan in the Sunday Telegraph.

“I’ve met Abramovich once, the first time he came here.

“He flew into the JJB area in his helicopter. I said I’d send a car to pick him up but he said ‘no’. He had a bullet-proof car pick him up.

SIR Alex Ferguson stands ready to take his haul to TEN Premier League titles and two European Cups in the next few history-making days.

But the Manchester United boss won’t be resting on his ctory laurels, issuing the stark warning: “I’ve got a bit of damage to do yet.”

And one goal Fergie wants to achieve is eclipsing Liverpool’s proud 18-title haul.

He can go some way towards it today, as he plots to retain his Premier League crown at Wigan and then beat Chelsea in the Champions League Final.

To even contemplate finishing potless is, in his own words, “unthinkable but possible”.

And that’s about as close as you’ll get to a morsel of self- doubt as Ferguson continues with his route march towards footballing immortality.

He may be hurtling towards his 67th birthday at the end of the year – but his vision for United is still crystal clear.

He is focusing on his 10th Premier League title – the 17th in United’s rich history.

And he can also see the day when his club overtake Liverpool’s record.

He would also love to overhaul the old enemy by beating their European Cup collection of five trophies. The cream of Europe are also in Ferguson’s sights as his relentless thirst for champagne moments continues.

Fergie, as they say in Manchester, is mad for it.

And he fully expects to continue inflicting the pain of defeat on his opponents for at least the next couple of years.

He said: “It’s unthinkable that we could be in the same position as Arsenal.

“It’s unthinkable but it’s possible. Of course it is. We are talking about two games we have to win.

“And I’m confident that we can do it. I have got the players and the right football club to keep driving me on.

“It’s easy to do that at this club. I think in the way the players have performed they are confident in their own abilities.

“Confident of themselves as a football team in terms of team spirit. They trust each other. They have confidence in each other.

“These are good signs to have. I think that the future of the club is good so I have no fears about that part.

“They will keep on winning titles over the years after I have gone.

“The structure of the club is great. The training ground and everything else is in place. Our youth development is strong. It’s a young club. We have made sure of that.

“Getting to 19 league titles will happen. Hopefully in my time – but it will happen.”

Ferguson will be covered in red and white tickertape if United beat Wigan today, irrespective of Chelsea’s result against Bolton at Stamford Bridge.

And if his team of 2008 lift the Premier League trophy, his mind will definitely race back to 1993 and the team of Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce and Eric Cantona – when he won his first title to end United’s 26 years of hurt.

Ferguson added: “The first was definitely the hardest to win. It opened the door. No question about that. We had waited all those 26 years.

It had to happen, of course, but I still had to wait five years for my first title.

“It’s amazing how difficult it is to win the league here.

“But once we got that consistency and the team developed, the squad got better – then it became a good habit for us to win the league.

“If we win it again today it’s 10. And that’s an amazing achievement.

“It would be our 17th title and one behind Liverpool. We’re getting closer. We’re coming up on the rails.”
