ROME ( AFP) - Le capitaine de l´AS Rome ( 1re div. italienne de football), Francesco Totti pourrait quitter son club la saison prochaine, rapporte le journal Gazzetta dello sport mercredi.

Totti, qui a effectué toute sa carrière sous les couleurs du club romain, a lancé une sorte d´ultimatum à son président Franco Sensi: " Ma priorité serait évidemment de rester ici, mais il faut une équipe compétitive, capable de lutter pour le titre national, une formation du calibre de celle de cette saison" a affirmé Totti dans un entretien exclusif au quotidien milanais.

Le " Golden boy" de la Roma a conseillé à ses dirigeants de recruter au moins quatre joueurs de valeur, le Français Philippe Mexès, depuis longtemps dans le collimateur de la Roma, le Tchèque Marek Jankulowski ( Udinese), le Néerlandais Edgar Davids ( Barcelone) et surtout l´Italien Christian Vieri ( Inter Milan), en délicatesse avec son entraîneur Alberto Zaccheroni.

" Je veux savoir, à mon retour du Portugal, ce qui se passe exactement et qui viendra, qui partira et qui restera, car après, il sera trop tard pour y remédier", a-t-il ajouté.

Totti a laissé entendre que s´il n´obtenait satisfaction, il serait prêt à émigrer sous d´autres cieux, étant entendu qu´il ne revêtira jamais les couleurs d´une autre équipe italienne, par respect pour les tifosi: " Dans mon esprit il n´y a que Madrid, pas l´Angleterre car le football anglais ne me fascine pas et je ne m´y sentirais pas à mon aise. Liam Miller: The New Keane?

It´s easy to forget that Fergie has already made his first signing for the 2004/05 season.
Celtic midfielder Liam Miller will become a Manchester United player on 1 July, after signing a pre-contract agreement during the January transfer window. But what can United fans expect from the Republic of Ireland international?

ManUtd.com asked Kevin Smith, editor of the unofficial website Celtic Mad, to tell us more about Miller.

" Liam Miller is still only young, but plays as though he has been around for years," says Smith.

" He has a good eye for a pass, and reads the game well. His work-rate is decent enough, he can get physical if needed and will get goals for the team. He has no fears in trying to beat players.

" He has fantastic potential. Alex Ferguson will bring out the best in him."

" I´ll be sad to see him leave Celtic. He has great talent and will be sorely missed."

News of Miller´s move to Manchester shocked Celtic fans. Some were angered by the move, considering it a betrayal by the player.

" Liam has been labelled as a traitor," says Smith. " Some fans have even booed him at recent games. But at the end of the day, Manchester United are a massive club, and no one should hold a player back from reaching his true potential."

Miller first showed signs of his potential in a friendly at Fulham last year. " He looked composed and confident on the ball, despite being played out of position," remembers Smith.

" Liam´s best performances were against Lyon in the Champions League, when he scored after coming on as a substitute, and against Rangers at Ibrox when he strolled his first Old Firm game."

Miller´s position and nationality make comparisons with United captain Roy Keane inevitable. Celtic fan Smith says there are similarities in the way the two Irish midfielders play the game.

" Like Keane, he appears confident on and off the ball and he always looks to get involved in the game. He can put the boot in and is very strong, despite his small build. He does not, however, have the same temperament as Keane!

" Liam´s main flaw at the moment would be that he gives the ball away more regularly than Keane. But I think, in time, he will have all the qualities needed to replace Roy Keane, at both club and international level.

" Liam will have to be brought in slowly. I can´t see him being an overnight success at Old Trafford like he was at Celtic, not when Keane and Paul Scholes have their places cemented in the side. But he will get his chance, and providing his history of injury trouble doesn´t bother him in the future, he will be a star in the Premiership.

" He has fantastic potential. Alex Ferguson will certainly bring out the best in him."

United´s Brazilian midfielder Kleberson has asked not to be judged on a fragmented debut season in the Premiership.

The World Cup winner has struggled to impress during his first year at United, but that was possibly to be expected of a player arriving from Brazilian football where the style of play and culture are in stark contrast to life in the English Premiership.

Kleberson admits it has been a testing year, but says fans are yet to see anywhere near his best.

" It´s been really frustrating,” he said. “I played a few games at the start of the season but then got injured. I haven´t had a full run but I am just looking forward to next year. Next year I want to really help Manchester United.

" You´ve seen a little of me but not the full me. Next season the fans will hopefully see the real Kleberson.”

Acclimatisation has been a problem for South American players in the past. Kleberson was considered by Sir Alex Ferguson as a direct replacement for Argentina playmaker Veron, who was sold to Chelsea after failing to settle into the team.

" You´ve seen a little of me but not the full me. Next season the fans will hopefully see the real Kleberson."

However, Kleberson, who became a dad for the first time in November, says he and his young family are settled in Manchester.

" I am really happy here," he said, " so is my wife and also my baby was born here. I am really happy that my baby was born here in Manchester.

" There have been no real problems. Obviously there has been some acclimatisation, but no real problems. I´m looking forward to next season when I can really show what I am worth.”

It has been a difficult season both personally for Kleberson and the team in general. Surrendering the league title to Arsenal and crashing out of Europe, coupled with plenty of off-field attention, have made it a fiery introduction to life at United for the former Atletico Paranaense player.

But, Kleberson says he feels part of a team destined for success. " Manchester United are a big club," he said. " It has been a hard year for us, but when we start to play like a team that has gelled together, then we are going to see changes and plenty of success."

The Brazilian midfielder has played on right and in the centre for United, but says he will play anywhere in the Red shirt as long as he is playing well.

" My true position is in the midfield, that is where I played before I came here and that is where I played during the World Cup. However, I don´t mind if I play on the right of midfield, I can play there. I don´t care where I play as long as I am performing consistently for Manchester United. "

Rio ban and injuries cost us - Fergie

Rio Ferdinand´s suspension and a host of defensive injuries cost Manchester United the title this season, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The United boss says had it not been for the eight-month ban slapped on Ferdinand for missing a drugs test, and the collapse of what had been the best defence in the Premiership, United might have made more of a fight of retaining their title.

Ferguson said: " The problem has almost got lost in the mist of people´s memories but on 17 January, we were four points clear of Arsenal and lost Rio Ferdinand into that suspension.

" Then Mikael Silvestre got an injury and Quinton Fortune had a serious injury in training and to be honest we just fell apart defensively at that moment in time.

" I felt we were the best we had been defensively for years and we had only lost 15 goals up to that point but that was a bad, bad blow for us and there is no question about that.

" When you are so strong defensively, you couldn´t see teams beating us, and that is the essence of a championship winning team."

Before Ferdinand began his lengthy suspension, United had won 16 of the 21 league games they had played, but since losing 1-0 at Wolves on 17 January, they have won just five times in 15 Premiership outings

BIG THREE FIGHT FOR STARLET

The race for Spanish starlet Gerard Pique Bernabeu is hotting up, with Chelsea joining Manchester United and Arsenal in the race for his signature.
The Barcelona youngster is currently in France for the European Under-17 Championship - but moves off the field are being made by a number of clubs.

The player´s representative Arturo Canales has told skysports.com that offers for his client have been made - but nothing has been agreed.

" We have not closed an agreement with any club, although there are some interesting offers," said Canales.

" Everything is in the hands of Barcelona - they must decide.

" There have been several clubs interested for a long time, we cannot deny anything - but this is serious and we are doing it in the correct way."

The grandson of former Barcelona vice-president Amador Bernabeu is one of the rising stars of Spanish football, but the young defender could be set to leave Camp Nou.

Arsenal were the first to show an interest February, with United and Chelsea joining soon after.

Chelsea appear to be offering he biggest financial package, but The Gunners have a trump card in that Pique is very good friends with Arsenal´s midfield starlet Cesc - who moved to Highbury last summer.

Cesc ( pictured), who was also with Barcelona, moved to Arsenal and has already made his first team debut and he is believed to have told Pique to join him in North London.

All the English clubs were believed to have been present at the Stade Georges Boulogne on Tuesday to watch Pique in Spain´s 1-0 win over Turkey.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have agreed terms with Arsenal for Dutch international Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The former Rangers star has spent the season on loan at Barca and has enjoyed a good season.

Barcelona have yet to agree personal terms, but that would appear a mere formality and they should confirm a deal within the next month.
