Smith refuses to rule out United switch

Leeds striker Alan Smith has admitted that he would consider moving to the club´s bitter rivals Manchester United.

Many felt that the lifelong Elland Road supporter would shy away from a switch across the Pennines to Old Trafford rather than risk upsetting The Whites´ supporters who idolise him.

However, the 23-year-old England forward insists the chance to join a big club who would help him challenge for major honours and further his international career would overrule any such emotions.

Smith told Radio Five Live: " At this stage you can´t rule out anything. People always say that Leeds United and Man United are big rivals but next year we are not even going to be in the same division so it´s not even a rivalry.

" I´m not saying I want to walk out of here and go to Man United, but they´re a massive club. If you said the same thing to me about Valencia or Juventus, I´d tell you the same answer.

" At this stage of my career, if I want to win trophies and I want to do well, then I´ve got to move on.

" If I were 32 I´d stay here, it´s as simple as that. But I´m not, I´m 23, I´ve got a lot of football in me and I´m an ambitious person.´´

Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be a big admirer of Smith´s battling qualities and Eric Cantona has already shown that a player can overcome the Roses rivalry under the Scot´s guidance.

Joe Jordan and Gordon McQueen also made the switch to good effect in the 70s while Johnny Giles and Gordon Strachan became firm favourites at Leeds after going the other way.

Andrade tells United - Come and get me

Highly-rated Deportivo La Coruna defender Jorge Andrade has hinted that he will quit the Spanish club if Manchester United make a move for him.

The Portugal international has had an impressive campaign for Depor, who he helped reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, and has been linked with a number of leading sides, including the Old Trafford outfit.

And Andrade will certainly be interested if Sir Alex Ferguson decides to give him a call.

" I have come from a small club in Portugal to Depor and I am always interested in furthering my career if the opportunity arises,´´ he said.

" My agent ( Jorge Mendez) is the same as ( Cristiano) Ronaldo´s and he has told me a lot of good things about Manchester United.

" But I have a contract here with Depor at the moment so it will be a case of Manchester agreeing a deal with them. I have enjoyed playing for Depor and improving the team.´´
