GILL RULES OUT BECKHAM RETURN
Manchester United chief executive David Gill insists the club do not want to re-sign David Beckham, even though Rio Ferdinand believes a number of fans would love to see the England captain back at Old Trafford.
Gill has attempted to pour cold water over speculation that the Real Madrid midfielder would head to the side he supported as a youngster if Sir Alex Ferguson was no longer manager of The Red Devils.
With Real coach Carlos Queiroz stating that Beckham will still be at El Santiago Bernabeu next term, the reports concerning an early exit for the player may die down, even though Chelsea continue to be mooted as his likeliest destination.
Even respected French publication L´Equipe has indicated that Beckham will join Roman Abramovich´s Stamford Bridge revolution during the close season.
" Beckham won´t be coming back to United," Gill told The Manchester Evening News. " I just think he has moved on and so has the club."
Whether United have ´moved on´ may be open to debate after a lacklustre defence of the title has seen Ferguson´s men record their worst-ever Premiership season.
Certainly, Ferdinand feels United would welcome his England team-mate back to Manchester.
" ´Becks´ is a great player and I am sure the fans would love to see him come back and play for United again," said Ferdinand.
" He left the club on good terms and, to have the England captain back, would be great.
" I have not spoken to him for a while but, if he did come back, I am sure he would be welcomed."
Sir Alex Ferguson has once again moved to end persistent rumours linking Ruud van Nistelrooy with a move to Real Madrid.
Ferguson and van Nistelrooy last week took the unprecedented step of denying the rumours together at the manager´s weekly pre-match Press briefing at Carrington.
Fergie also quashed any talk of club captain Roy Keane leaving Old Trafford.
Sir Alex´s frustration at the situation, fuelled by further reports in Spanish newspaper Marca on Friday, was clearly visible as he fielded questions on the subject.
" Ruud and Roy will be here next season," was Fergie´s curt response.
" I did what I had to do last week at the press conference in terms of relieving the supporters´ minds about Ruud and Roy´s future. And that is exactly where the position stands."
Last week Ferguson was emphatic in his stance on the future of van Nistelrooy.
" Things have become silly and dangerous in the last two weeks with a lot of malicious gossip and tittle-tattle," the manager told us. " There is no foundation to it.
" At times like this it is important that you get it straight from everyone involved, whether Ruud is going to Barcelona, Real Madrid or whether he is happy here or not. We want to clarify that, and we are clear in our minds about it all."
Ruud was as equally unequivocal, adding: " I´m going nowhere."

WENGER DOUBTS RUUD SALE STORIES
Arsene Wenger believes that Manchester United would be embarrassed if Ruud van Nistelrooy left the club in the summer, after publicly stating that the forward would stay.
The Arsenal boss, whose side recently picked up the Premiership title, insists the rumours about van Nistelrooy moving to Real Madrid are inaccurate - because of Manchester United´s open desire to keep hold of the prolific forward.
" You don´t sell your best players," Wenger stated. " I would be surprised if United sold van Nistelrooy for two reasons.
" Firstly, because he extended his contract this year. Secondly, because they have come out to say both parties are happy to keep it going.
" Once you make that step, you know that you are committed publicly in an official statement.
" Manchester United are a serious club and you can´t imagine for a second that a serious club would do that.
" With David Beckham they never did that. It would be embarrassing for them.
" I expect Manchester United to be strong next season, no matter what happens, but I still do not expect van Nistelrooy to leave.
VIDUKA MISSES END OF SEASON
Leeds United striker Mark Viduka will miss the last two games of the season through injury.
The big Australian is struggling with back and hamstring problems and has been ruled out of Leeds´ last two games in The Premiership before their seemingly certain relegation to Division One.
It means that Leeds will be without Viduka for this weekend´s home clash with Charlton and next week´s away trip to Chelsea.
Many believe that Viduka will now have played his last game for the club, with the former Celtic hit-man expected to move on in the summer.
Middlesbrough, Valencia, Roma and Galatasaray have all been linked with Viduka and there is sure to be a mad scramble for his signature in the close-season.

SMITH LOOKING FOR MOVE TO EUROPE
Leeds United´s England striker Alan Smith has said that he would like a move abroad and that he is ready to play in Europe´s top leagues, such Spain´s La Liga or Italian Serie A.
Smith has made no attempt to hide that he wants to leave Leeds now that they have been relegated from the Premiership, saying that he would not play Division One football.
The feisty striker has now revealed in The Sun that he would like a move abroad.
He said: " I’d love to play in one of the other top leagues in Europe.
" I’m ready to play abroad. I watch the Spanish football on Saturday and Sunday nights and have often dreamed of playing out there.
" Italy would be a great place to go, too. There’s nothing better than testing yourself against the world’s best defenders."
Smith, who has scored 13 goals in 41 European matches for Leeds, has said that he never wanted to leave the Yorkshire club, but now insists he must move if he is to improve upon his nine England caps.
He added: " I never thought I would ever leave Leeds. I thought I would spend my whole career there.
" But now I’ve got to go. I’ve got to do the right thing for my career — and going abroad really appeals.
Smith also feels that he is at the right stage of his life to move abroad, and wants to savour again some of the heady nights experienced when Leeds made it to the European Cup semi-final three years ago.
" I’m young and single so I’ve no immediate ties here. I’ve always fancied experiencing a different culture.
" We played Valencia in the Champions League a few years ago and I’ve never forgotten the experience.
" What’s happened at Leeds is disappointing but, at the same time, I’m excited at where the next move could be."
