Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has criticised the England camp after he confirmed Paul Scholes will require a hernia operation.

After his match-winning display at Newcastle last weekend, Scholes was restricted to a substitute´s role in Wednesday´s scrappy 1-0 win over basement dwellers Wolves.

The midfielder eventually made his arrival midway through the second half as Ferguson´s side attempted to close out their third successive win.

However, while pleased to see his side maintain their 100% record, Ferguson revealed Scholes must go under the surgeon´s knife to solve a problem which worsened during his time with England for last week´s friendly win over Croatia.

" Paul has been carrying a hernia problem for quite a bit," revealed the United boss.

" We told the England people about it but when he came back he was in a real state.

" It is really painful and at the moment it is not possible for him to play two games in a week.

" He will need an operation at some point but we will have to pick our moment."

The smart money would be on that moment coming during an international break, one of which follows Sunday´s trip to Southampton, as Ferguson attempts to solve a series of injury problems, which ruled Rio Ferdinand, Mikael Silvestre, Nicky Butt and Quinton Fortune out of Wednesday night´s contest and also saw Ryan Giggs start alongside Scholes on the bench.

With debutant Kleberson and fellow new arrivals Eric Djemba-Djemba and Cristiano Ronaldo all failing to make an impact, Ferguson admitted he had made too many changes, and was thankful for John O´Shea´s first senior goal which eventually gave the home side victory.

The result was tough luck on Wolves, for whom Henri Camara wasted a series of glorious chances either side of the interval.

" Ferguson thought he could take liberties with his team and it nearly came unstuck," blasted former United midfielder Paul Ince, who was outstanding in his midfield holding role.

" The longer the game went on, the more we fancied our chances."

Fergie ups race for Puyol
Manchester United are trying to revive a beat-the-deadline deal to land Barcelona defender Carles Puyol. Talks have been going on all week and Barca now want £20million for Puyol after a deal involving cash plus striker Diego Forlan was shelved. United initially enquired about Puyol in the summer during the club’s tour of America but were put off by the price. But now boss Alex Ferguson wants the deal done before the weekend’s transfer deadline. Puyol, 25, has been at Barcelona all his career. But representatives of United and Barcelona will be at today’s Champions League draw when a deal could be done. Ferguson said recently: “Defensively we still have a problem. One more player would give us comfort.”

Pour repondre à ivguenyp, qq commentaires sur hier...Djemba une excellente surprise, très fort dans les duels et il a pris le jeu à son compte avec une certaine réussite, Kleberson totalement transparent, C.Ronaldo très fort techniquement mais sa jeunesse le pousse à en faire parfois un peu bcp et à oublier ses partenaires, Solskjaer a fait un bon match même s´il a manqué un petit qqch ds le dernier geste, Ruud très actif mais pas récompensé, Forlan surprenant, il progresse de plus en plus ( ^^), O´Shea irreprochable en defense et auteur du but de MU, Gary Neville semble avoir retrouvé sa meilleur forme et a multiplié les montées, les dedoublements et les retours en defense, Keano imperial ( et le mot est faible) en defense centrale, on a peu vu Phil Neville, Bellion n´a joué que 6 mns et a montré qu´il allait vite mais il en abuse un peu, Giggs a démontré qu´il avait une classe d´ecart avec C.Ronaldo pour l´instant, Scholes a joué intelligemment, distribué le jeu, Kleberson devrait en prendre exemple ^^...

C´est pas pour polemiquer mais Arsenal refait parler de lui...

Robert Pires and Olof Mellberg could be in hot water after clashing during Arsenal´s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Highbury on Wednesday.

Although the incident did not appear that serious, the Football Association will have to await the reports from the match officials before deciding whether to launch an investigation.

Neither Arsene Wenger nor David O´Leary witnessed the brief flare-up, which erupted after Pires went sprawling following the faintest of touches from Mellberg just before the interval.

Mellberg voiced his dissatisfaction to the French international and the verbal exchange continued after the half-time whistle went, with Villa assistant coach Roy Aitken and Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira also involved.

il s´est bagarré dans les tunnels et avec les antecedents d´arsenal il risque tres tres gros . Depuis le debut de la saison il est chaud ce club . Il est tranquille notre groupe quand meme

Le pire pour Arsenal c´est que Vieira est impliqué et lui peut risquer très, très gros...

ils vont perdre pires , vieira , campbell pas gloop pour eux . mais vieira ca peut lui couter tres cher
