Gary Neville believes Manchester United´s new crop of young players can inspire some of the older heads at Old Trafford.

Alex Ferguson has added to the home-grown talent of Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson by buying Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Djemba Djemba, Tim Howard, Kleberson and David Bellion.

" This new group will strike up a friendship because they´ve all come in young to a new club in the same way we had a bond from growing up at Old Trafford," Neville told the Manchester Evening News on Friday.

" The bond will serve them well just as it served us well," the defender added. " They are in it together at the start. They´ll probably be close but like we did they are all also integrating with the rest of the squad.

" I can see similarities to us in 1995. I am sure then the experienced guys like Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Peter Schmeichel and Eric Cantona, for instance, were saying that we lifted them with our raw enthusiasm and our freshness.

" That´s what these new lads, and others like Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson, are doing now. They are coming in without a worry in the world. They just want to play on the greatest stage at Manchester United like we did and that´s great.

" That´s what you want to see. The players who have come in this summer have lifted the dressing room. They have lifted training because they are young players in that 18-23 bracket and they bring a spark to the place.

" They are quick, sharp and eager. They are also really hungry players who want to do well just as we did."

Djemba Djemba and Kleberson are likely to drop to the bench for Sunday´s trip to Southampton, with defenders Rio Ferdinand and Mikael Silvestre fit again after missing Wednesday´s unconvincing 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Midfielder Paul Scholes is in the squad despite needing surgery for a hernia problem as United seek their fifth win in six trips to Southampton.

The champions, seeking their fourth straight victory of the new season, could extend their unbeaten premier league run to 22 games going back to last December.

Un info quand même du Manchester Evening News...

=>Wes rules himself out

Stuart Mathieson

WES BROWN
WES Brown and Sir Alex Ferguson have dismissed reports that the defender is set for a miraculous early comeback from his snapped cruciate knee ligament injury.

Brown suffered his second cruciate injury in four years against Everton on the champions´ title celebration day at Everton last May.

The 23-year-old´s left knee collapsed as he tackled Wayne Rooney at Goodison.

Although he hobbled around soaking up United´s championship success on Merseyside a subsequent scan revealed the luckless England player had suffered the dreaded injury again.

In the summer of 1999 he did his right knee in training and was out for a full season.

But speculation emerged this week that Brown was racing back to fitness and could be ready for a return by the end of September easing concerns over the depth of United´s senior defensive department.

" That´s absolute nonsense," Sir Alex Ferguson said.

" Wes is doing well but it is still going to be around January, as was first said, when he´ll be looking at a comeback again."

Brown confirmed Fergie´s bulletin. " The specialist has said late December around Christmas or early January. I am just looking at that and not getting my hopes up," he said.

" I keep that target in my head but there is no guarantee it is going to be then.

" I am not even kicking a ball yet. I can run again and have just moved onto that. Hopefully I will move onto other things soon.

Strength

" Last time I came back a bit early and it didn´t help so I have learnt from that. Everything has got to feel right in the knee and you know in your own head you have to feel right.

" It is no use coming back if you are still feeling something.

" My right knee which I injured four years ago is fine and I don´t have any problems with it at all so hopefully I can work hard on my left knee and get it to the same strength as my right is.

" Basically I know I have to do the work. If I don´t put the work in then the muscles don´t get stronger. You have to put the work in and that´s what I am doing.

" It is frustrating but you always think ahead to when it is done and you are back on the pitch playing again.

" I couldn´t have the op straightaway but after surgery I was able to start working after about a week and a half on the bike. It´s frustrating though. It never crosses my mind to think `why me?´ again. I don´t think about that. You just have to get on with it and concentrate on the positives."

Brown has suffered a succession of lengthy injury setbacks since he broke into the United senior side as an 18-year-old in 1998.

Last term he broke his ankle in Hungary in United´s first match of the season in their Champions League qualifier. He returned in November and made it through the term up until disaster struck at Everton.

With the transfer window shutting tomorrow Fergie is banking on a successful return for Brown in mid-season having failed to bring in a central defender during the summer.

=>Sinon on continue à parler d´Ayala ou Chivu peut-être mais SAF ne serait pas trop fan d´Ayala...
