Ajax Amsterdam have agreed to loan Cristian Chivu to AS Roma while the two clubs hammer out a final transfer deal, the Dutch club said on Monday.
Ajax had said earlier on Monday that the Romanian defender´s planned 18 million-euro ( $19.76 million) transfer would not go ahead because the Italian side had failed to secure a bank guarantee for the transfer sum.
" After the receipt of a new payment, Ajax and AS Roma have reached an agreement on the immediate loan of Cristian Chivu," Ajax said in their second statement of the day about the transfer.
" The Italian club will hire Chivu for four months, until the winter break of the 2003-2004 season. In the meantime Ajax and AS Roma will work on the definitive transfer of Cristian Chivu to AS Roma," they said, adding that they would give no financial details.
The Dutch club had said early on Monday that they planned to recall Chivu to Amsterdam for training this week.
Ajax agreed to sell Chivu to the Serie A side on July 8 for 18 million euros ( $19.68 million) and the 22-year-old had signed a five-year deal with the club from the Italian capital.
But two days later Roma were banned from international transfer deals by world soccer´s governing body FIFA because of an outstanding debt to a Peruvian club.
Ajax said last month that it would turn to FIFA to force AS Roma to come up with a bank guarantee for the transfer and would not release Chivu until the guarantee arrived.
Chivu, one of the best young defenders in the European game, had also been linked with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
