Sir Alex´s Rooned of golf
Sir Alex Ferguson got together with Wayne Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford over a game of golf in Portugal yesterday. And with Rooney set to head for Old Trafford this summer, what could they have been talking about?

Ruud: We’ll be dynamite duo
Ruud van Nistelrooy last night told Manchester United: Don’t sell me to pay for Wayne Rooney – play me alongside him. He said: “It would be great if Rooney came to the club. You always look to get the best, and great players like Rooney are welcome here.”
Andy Dunn, The People
Roon-nay
Manchester United last night admitted that they cannot afford England wonderboy Wayne Rooney. Everton have slapped a £50million valuation on the 18-year-old striker, who has been tipped to move to Old Trafford. But United chief executive David Gill revealed: “We can’t afford to spend £45m or £50m on one player. One of the reasons we run a successful operation is because we operate within strict financial parameters. Our priority now is to concentrate on exits – then that’s it.”
Paul Hetherington, Daily Star Sunday
Smith to be used as Roo bait
Manchester United could use Alan Smith as bait to land Wayne Rooney from Everton. Smith, 23, joined United from Leeds only six weeks ago in a £7million deal. Everton tried to buy the striker before United boss Sir Alex Ferguson grabbed his signature. And even though he is yet to make his United debut, Smith could now be pivotal in United´s bid to buy Rooney in a £30m deal. United will offer the debt-ridden Merseysiders £20m in cash and the choice of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Diego Forlan and David Bellion - but none of those names appeals to Everton boss David Moyes. Ferguson would have thrown Nicky Butt into the equation but he will join Newcastle for £4m. So now Ferguson is faced with the prospect of having to sacrifice Smith for Rooney.

Ruud stays
Ruud van Nistelrooy has slammed new claims that he´s poised for a £30million move to Real Madrid. The Dutch striker says he would rather quit football than leave Manchester United. The latest rumour claimed the sale would raise the cash for a £25m United bid for Everton´s Wayne Rooney. But Van Nistelrooy said: " I have tired of these stories, they are total garbage. I am not leaving United, why should I? I´d rather retire than be sold to Real Madrid. Is that emphatic enough? I don´t know what else I can do other than say I´m a Manchester United player - end of story."

King Eric can’t wait
Eric Cantona is looking forward to a battle between Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo for his crown as king of Old Trafford. With Sir Alex Ferguson looking to pair up the teenage duo next season, the Frenchman is happy that the legacy he left behind is in safe hands. “Rooney has been the sensation of Euro 2004,” said Cantona. “While Ronaldo has also shown he is a player of international quality. If Ferguson can unite Rooney and Ronaldo he will have the two most exciting kids in the game.”
Simon Mullock, Sunday Mirror
Wenger: I dream of signing Rooney
Arsene Wenger has conceded Wayne Rooney is Old Trafford-bound - and predicts he will be the biggest threat to Arsenal´s title next season. He was stunned at Rooney´s impact on Euro 2004, even though he´d tipped him as the brightest star he´d come across during his time in the Premiership. Now the Highbury boss knows a Rooney-inspired Manchester United will pose as big a challenge as all Chelsea´s billions when the new campaign kicks off. Wenger, in Portugal working for French television, admitted: " I think Rooney will be a United player next season. They know they have to act because Chelsea will do something big and they cannot afford to be left behind. I dream at night of bringing him to Arsenal but that´s all it is, a fantasy. We cannot compete with the money he would cost so I just have to accept he is out of our reach."

Rooney and Ronaldo make Euro top team
Wayne Rooney last night confirmed his position as the shooting star of Europe when he was named in the Euro 2004 Team of the Tournament. The Everton striker was one of two England players to make the elite eleven - Ashley Cole was selected at left-back - but there was no place for Sol Campbell. The Arsenal centre-half, who made the World Cup 2002 team, was pipped by Portugal´s outstanding Ricardo Carvalho and surprise choice Jaap Stam. Portugal, who meet Greece in the final tonight, were the best represented, with Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo joining Carvalho in the line-up.

Ron’s the one for me
If Cristiano Ronaldo turns it on today, he’ll emerge as the player of the tournament at Euro 2004. The Manchester United winger is very close to being that already. And I’m not surprised. Ever since he found his feet at United, he’s been outstanding.
Bryan Robson, Daily Star Sunday
We’re Ron on the march
Driving out of Lisbon and heading to the A1 Norte, the posters pinned to the tenement blocks almost touch the sky. Four weeks ago, they were of Rui Costa - a handsome symbol of the golden generation that never reached the heights for which they were seemingly destined. Now they are of Cristiano Ronaldo, the boy who would be king. And tonight will mark the most significant rite of passage for the teenager thrust into the English spotlight by Sir Alex Ferguson. And at the end of a heady year - one in which he lit up the FA Cup Final with a bewildering display - most believe Ronaldo has come of age. Take Arsene Wenger, for example. He has always been a closet admirer of Ronaldo and was known to be in the running for his signature until the price went into eight figures. Wenger says: " If you allow him to get the ball under control at his feet he is devastating. He arrived at this tournament still a bit of a boy, but he has become a man. He has been excellent for Manchester United this season but has matured even more here. Next season, he could be unplayable.”

Ruud feud
Dutch ace Ruud van Nistelrooy is locked in a bitter feud with Chelsea’s new £8million striker Mateja Kezman. Van Nistelrooy loathes his former PSV Eindhoven team-mate after accusing him of soccer’s unforgivable sin – criticising a colleague in public. And that colleague was van Nistelrooy’s big buddy, PSV goalkeeper Ron Waterreus. “I have an aversion to Kezman,” stormed the United striker, “because of what he did on TV. I couldn’t believe what I heard. He blamed other players even though he had a bad game himself.”

Thanks Dad
Gabriel Heinze last night revealed his £7million move to Manchester United went through due to divine intervention from his dead father. The Argentine full-back feared the worst when negotiations with club officials stalled but says he felt his dad’s spirit guide him through the signing process. “I only lost my father a short time ago and this is a very difficult time for me,” said Heinze. “But I’ve signed for United to win things and the title next season would be the perfect tribute.”

Brat Becks
David Beckham was last night sensationally branded a lazy, whingeing failure by his former Real Madrid boss. In an astonishing attack, Carlos Queiroz accused the England captain of deliberately missing training and reeling off a string of feeble excuses for his poor displays during Euro 2004. Beckham had blasted his Real bosses following England´s heartbreaking European Championship exit, blaming his below-par displays on a lack of conditioning work at the Spanish giants. But Queiroz, Real´s manager last season, stormed: " Beckham´s comments don´t surprise me-he always has his own excuses. He had them when he failed with England in South Korea in the 2002 World Cup finals, and now when he has failed in Portugal.”
Matthew Owen, News of the World
Beckham calls truce with Fergie
David Beckham wants to a call a truce with Sir Alex Ferguson. I understand the England captain has grown increasingly worried at how the relationship with his former manager has deteriorated since his move to Real Madrid. His advisors are considering drafting a letter to Fergie aimed at clearing up any misunderstanding between the two.

Girls mob Ronaldo in the street but he treats them like dirt
Portuguese pin-up Cristiano Ronaldo hides away from his female fans in Manchester because they are making his life hell. The teenage winger locks himself away to avoid the unwanted attention of his admirers. And when the eligible bachelor does venture out into the city, he disguises himself with dark glasses and a baseball cap pulled down over his face. His sister Liliana offers a revealing glimpse of Ronaldo´s lifestyle and admits the United teenager is often too scared to leave his own home. She said: " He has no problem pulling the girls but he runs a mile when they come near him. He´s suspicious, because they go up to him a lot now he is so well known. Since he arrived in Manchester last summer he has not had a steady girlfriend - he doesn´t have time for that now.”

GUNNERS EYE ITALIAN
Arsenal are making a move for Parma´s talented youngster Francesco Lupoli - the second of their starlets to attract interest from The Premiership.
The Italy Under-17 international has been reportedly offered a three-year deal to join The Gunners, worth around €300,000 a season.
The Gialloblu striker is the second starlet to attract the interest from England´s top flight, with Manchester United also interested in a young Italian.
United have been tracking Giuseppe Rossi, but the Italian side are not too keen on their best youngsters leaving so early in their careers.
Parma will be contacting Uefa over the matters as they feel they should be paid a handsome compensation should the English big-guns want to sign their youngsters.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has never been afraid to bring in youngsters from abroad if he thinks they are good enough.
The Frenchman has a good record in bringing young players through and the latest addition to the squad of the Premiership champions could well be the young Italian.
va falloir payer cher rossi pour le voir chez nous...
We won´t take less than £30m to sell Rooney, insist Everton
Everton are to tell Manchester United that they will not consider anything less than £30million for Wayne Rooney. United kicked off the softening-up process yesterday by publicly declaring that it is not their policy to pay ´£45-50m´ for one player. That was Everton´s original price-tag for Rooney, but the Merseyside club are in no mood to let their prize asset leave for less than what would be a British record transfer fee. United remain favourites to open the bidding for real. There are moves within Old Trafford to raise the cash to table an offer for one of the stars of the European Championship.
Matt Lawton, Daily Mail
Michael Stewart says he will bust a gut to make the most of his unexpected opportunity with Scottish giants Rangers.
With his chances of first-team action at Old Trafford looking limited in the future, the young midfielder has been offered a trial with the Glasgow club by Gers boss Alec McLeish.
Stewart told the Daily Record: " Coming home to Scotland was a massive factor in me taking this chance to win a deal with Rangers as I could have sat it out at Old Trafford for the next two years.
" The opportunity to be among family and friends in my home environment and the chance to play for Rangers flicks every switch and ticks every plus box for me.
" I´m at an age when I know I can improve. When I knew for definite I was going to leave Manchester United, my initial thoughts were, ´How big a fall will I have to take?´ Then Rangers showed an interest.
" Rangers are a massive club and no different to Manchester United and I will bust a gut to make something materialise. I´m tired of talking a good game, I want to go out and play it.
" For two or three years, people have anticipated me doing something in football and I´ve had those thoughts. Rangers have handed me that platform and I intend to utilise it fully."
ManUtd.com would like to wish Michael the best of luck with his move
United new-boy Gabriel Heinze is the only Premiership player to make it into Argentina´s squad for the Copa America in Peru.
The £7million signing is joined by three of the Boca Juniors squad who will be appearing in the Vodafone Cup at Old Trafford in August.
Argentina´s manager, Marcelo Bielsa, has included goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri and midfielders Carlos Tevez and Clemente Rodriguez in his 21-strong squad for the South American championship between July 6 and 25.
All three will fly direct to join the Argentine squad from Colombia where Boca were beaten on penalties by Once Caldas in Manizales in the second leg of the final of the Copa Libertadores - the South American equivalent of the Champions League.
No fewer than 12 Europe-based players have been named in the squad.
Full Squad: Pablo Cavallero ( Celta, Spain), Roberto Abbondanzieri ( Boca); Roberto Ayala ( Valencia, Sp), Gabriel Heinze ( Manchester United, Eng), Facundo Quiroga ( Wolfsburg, Ger), Fabricio Coloccini ( Villarreal, Sp), Leandro Fernandez ( Newell´s Old Boys); Javier Zanetti ( Inter, It), Diego Placente ( Bayer Leverkusen, Ger), Juan Pablo Sorin ( Paris S-G, Fr), Kily Gonzalez ( Inter, It), Andres D´Alessandro ( Wolfsburg, Ger), Javier Mascherano, Luis Gonzalez ( River Plate), Clemente Rodriguez, Carlos Tevez ( Boca); Javier Saviola ( Barcelona, Sp), Cesar Delgado, Luciano Figueroa ( Cruz Azul, Mex), Mariano Gonzalez ( Palermo, It), Mauro Rosales ( Newell´s Old Boys).
Manchester United are still in the running for Wayne Rooney despite reports to the contrary over the weekend.
Old Trafford chief executive David Gill caused a stir amongst United fans by apparently disclosing that the club would " not be able to afford" the England star if Everton slap a proposed £50m price tag on his head.
Rooney is due to have contract talks at Goodison Park this week with United waiting for the outcome of that meeting before deciding on their next move.
Should Rooney refuse the offer of what is expected to be a five-year contract extension and a massive pay increase, Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to table a bid for the 18-year-old, but sources close to Old Trafford say it will be " nowhere near £50m".
Quotes attributed to Gill over the weekend actually came from an interview he gave more than a month ago when he said that United had already signed the players Ferguson had targeted at the end of last season - Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze.
He also refused to rule out any more transfer activity by adding: " You can never say never, but in terms of what we sat down with Alex ( Ferguson) before he went away and talked about transfer targets, we have achieved the two key targets he wanted.
" We do set a budget and targets. We have a transfer budget and we also have a wages target. We have gone on record to say that our wages will be roughly 50% of our turnover and therefore we need to achieve that target for the long-term financial stability and viability of the club."

YOUTH SET FOR RED DEVILS MOVE
Manchester United should wrap up the signing of Parma youngster Giuseppe Rossi in the coming week, with agent Andrea Pastorello confident that negotiations will go well.
Parma are less than delighted to part companty with one of their most promising youngsters, especially with another of their starlets Arturo Lipolo set to join Arsenal.
However the Italian side will be compensated for their role in the players´ progression and there is no binding contract in place to stop their migration.
Although United are yet to agree terms on what is expected to be a two-year deal for the 16-year-old, Pastorello - of P& Sportmanagement - confirmed that talks were underway.
" We are still negotiating," Pastorello exclusively told skysports.com. " We haven´t found an agreement yet because there are a few details to be ironed out.
" Until everything is signed and sealed there is always the fear that everything will fail.
" But I am confident an agreement will be agreed."
Sir Alex Ferguson ( pictured) is likely to give the youngster a chance to impress at Old Trafford - but could well loan out the playmaker to gain experience of English football.
