ROONEY OFFERED NEW CONTRACT
Wayne Rooney has been offered a new five-year contract by Everton as the Merseysiders look to fend off interest in the Euro 2004 hero.
The Toffees are desperate to retain their 18-year-old superstar, whose stock has risen considerably following his four goals in Portugal during England´s run in the tournament.
Manchester United are believed to be lining up a move for Rooney, but there appears to be no rush from Old Trafford to clinch any deal, particularly with Chelsea dropping out of the running this week.
It is suspected Sir Alex Ferguson might even bide his time and wait until January before launching any bid as Rooney would still be available for the UEFA Champions League, providing United, who have to qualify for the prestigious competition this year, are still involved.
Much depends on whether the Goodison youngster accepts the new deal on the table at the club.
The offer is the largest in Everton´s history and any fresh commitment should end the speculation regarding the teenager´s future.
However, if the contract remains unsigned, it will only further the belief that United could land their man, particularly if they are able to reduce the asking price on his head - which is reportedly around £50 million.
" We believe this is the right offer for Wayne," said Everton´s chief executive Trevor Birch. " One which fully reflects his growing stature within football.
The five-year deal which has been offered to Wayne is the biggest ever made in this club´s history and will hopefully not only satisfy Wayne´s demands but will also serve to underscore the club´s ambition.
" We have, in the offer of this new contract, made every conceivable effort to ensure Wayne remains a key figure at Everton Football Club for the foreseeable future," he told Everton´s official website.
Rooney has two years left on his existing deal.

AGENT PLANS ROONEY TALKS WITH TOFFEES
Wayne Rooney´s representatives have confirmed they plan to meet with Everton soon over the new deal they have offered the player.
Everton have moved to offer Rooney a lucrative new five-year contract, in a bid to ward off potential suitors following his Euro 2004 exploits.
The deal on offer is believed to be the biggest in the club´s history as they look to keep the teenager at Goodison Park.
Rooney still has two years left on his current deal, which he signed in January 2003, and his management group will now sit down and consider the offer before making any decision.
A spokesman for Proactive Sports Group, Rooney´s management company, said: " We have today received a fax from Everton Football Club giving the outline of a proposed long-term deal for Wayne Rooney.
" We will be giving this proper consideration and will be in contact with Trevor Birch to make arrangements for a meeting in the not-too-distant future."
Rooney is currently recovering from a broken bone in his right foot sustained during the quarter final defeat by Portugal and is expected to miss the start of the new Premiership season.
UNITED CLINCH DEAL FOR ROSSI
Manchester United have completed the signing of highly-rated youngster Giuseppe Rossi from Parma.
The 16-year-old has been in talks with United after the club took advantage of the fact that Rossi had not signed a professional contract at the Ennio Tardini.
Parma will not receive a transfer fee for Rossi, but will be compensated for their role in the players´ progression.
The teenager is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Europe having represented Italy at youth level.
Rossi is thought to have penned a two-year deal at Old Trafford, although he could be loaned next season in a bid to help him gain valuable experience.
Rossi´s signing follows hot on the heels of United capture of Spanish defender Gerard Pique from Barcelona and shows Sir Alex Ferguson is actively planning for United´s long-term future.
Rossi Joins Manchester United
Manchester United is delighted to announce the arrival of forward Giuseppe Rossi from Parma.
Rossi, who was born in New Jersey, America, and played for Parma´s Under-19 side, also plays for the Italian Under-19 international team.
