Manchester United are unlikely to make any more big-name signings this summer after ruling themselves out of an imminent bid for Wayne Rooney.
Having spent £14m on Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze, in addition to the £12m it took to capture Louis Saha from Fulham in January, plus the Bosman signing of Irish international Liam Miller, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to close his cheque-book and start bringing in some funds through player sales.
Diego Forlan and Nicky Butt remain the most likely departures, although speculation that a £3.75m fee has already been agreed with Newcastle for the England midfielder appears wide of the mark, even if the figure is roughly what United are expecting to recoup.
It certainly seems unlikely Butt will be heading to the United States on the Red Devils´ three-match pre-season tour.
