Up to you Wayne
Everton and Manchester United are locked in a multi-million pound test of nerve over Wayne Rooney. Everton officially offered the England striker a £50,000-a-week five- year deal yesterday and, despite debts of £40million, insist they are determined to hang on to him. But United are close to launching a bid for the 18-year-old although it will fall well short of putting Everton back in the black. But United are aware that, as revealed last week by Mirror Sport, Rooney is unlikely to stay at Everton despite the staggering deal which will reach £15million thanks to image rights deals. Rooney has two years left on his current contract which gives Everton the opportunity to wait until the winter transfer window before they are forced to sell.

Parker urges Rooney coup
Paul Parker has urged his old Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson to buy Wayne Rooney. Former England star Parker, 40, believes Rooney’s arrival would give the Old Trafford dressing room a massive boost. Fergie is stepping up efforts to land the 18-year-old England and Everton striker. And Parker, who made 147 appearances for United between 1991-96, said: “Fergie can make Wayne even better. Wayne is an exceptional talent. He reminds me of Mark Hughes but only quicker. Wayne has a lot to learn but he is a big player now and would have a massive impact on the rest of the team.”

Ronaldo is likely to keep Fergie waiting
Sir Alex Ferguson´s hopes of seeing Cristiano Ronaldo build on his Euro 2004 exploits will have to go on hold for more than two months as Manchester United´s latest club vs country dispute escalated yesterday. Portuguese FA officials are set to ignore Ferguson´s protests and call up Ronaldo for their football squad for next month´s Olympic Games. And as soon as he is back from Athens, the 19-year-old winger will be required by Luiz Felipe Scolari´s senior squad for his country´s opening two World Cup qualifiers on September 4 and 8. That means Ronaldo, one of the stars of Euro 2004, will not be available for a Premiership fixture until United´s visit to Bolton on September 11 - and even then Ferguson might feel he will need a break.

Jose´s rap for Fergie
Jose Mourinho has warned Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger to forget the mind games. The new Chelsea manager only started work on Monday but wasted no time telling his big Premiership rivals he will not be messed around. Mourinho said: “If they don´t touch me, I won’t touch anyone. If they touch me, I’ll be ready to hit back even harder. But I didn’t come here to have problems. I didn’t come here with rivalry in mind. I hope to do my work and may others do theirs.”

Gary: We fouled up
Gary Neville has admitted England flopped by crashing out of Euro 2004 in the quarter-finals. The Manchester United defender was one of the few successes in Portugal. But he said: “People back home may have thought a semi-final place would be par for us and acceptable. But that wouldn’t have been acceptable for the players because we were looking to go all the way. You hear excuses about why we went out but, the fact is, we didn’t have that extra edge.”

Boy Rossi is Red hot
Manchester United have completed the capture of Italian wonderkid Giuseppe Rossi from Parma. The American-born striker, 16, has already been capped at Under-19 level and is rated as one of Europe’s hottest talents. United will only have to pay minimal compensation to the Serie A club as Rossi had not signed a professional contract.

Starlet explains United switch
Spanish starlet Gerard Pique has revealed that poor treatment by Barcelona led him to complete a transfer to Manchester United.
Barca were left fuming last week after seeing another of their young gems leave Camp Nou to move to England - following Cesc´s switch to Arsenal last summer.
However, Pique - a highly-regarded defender - insists Barca have no-one but themselves to blame for his decision to defect to Old Trafford.
" I joined the club ( Barcelona) when I was seven years old and to leave this way always hurts," the 17-year-old told Goal.com.
" But these things happen in life and that is how it was - I´m a Manchester ( United) player now.
" The reasons for my leaving are basically the ( Barcelona) directors. This past year they have treated me awfully.
" When they found out that Arsenal and United had got in contact with me they dropped me from the Youth A side to the B side and did not play me for two months.
" I didn´t understand why they did it, but I accepted it anyway.
" In the end they offered me a professional contract. The financial side was good, but they were forcing me to sign for seven years and I only wanted five.
" We didn´t see eye to eye and it all ended there."
Pique insisted, however, that he was always drawn by the opportunity to join United, and was swayed after meeting Sir Alex Ferguson.
" Coming to England is a new adventure and I am very excited," he continued. " I´m travelling to Manchester on Thursday.
" Ferguson made a very good impression on me, we had some photos taken together and it was very good.
" He told me not to worry about anything, that I should work hard and he would follow my development closely.
" He also told me if I did work hard he was certain I would be in the first team in a few years."
When quizzed on a possible return to Barca in the future, he stated: " Could I return to Barca? Everything is possible.
" I have a five-year contract and, when I have completed that, depending on how things have gone we will see.
" For now I am only thinking about United. I will just have to wait and see what happens in a few years."
