"Pires forfait contre Aston Villa" ( lequipe.fr)

=>Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that he would not consider selling David Beckham.
Speculation about Beckham´s future has intensified in recent weeks with the England captain being linked with United´s Champions League opponents Real Madrid.

But Ferguson ruled out any possibility of Beckham being sold as part of a rebuilding process at Old Trafford in the summer.

"It is totally out of the question. There is no way we would sell him - or any of our best players," said Ferguson.

Beckham has reportedly been targeted by several top European clubs since he was hit by a football boot kicked by Ferguson after the FA Cup defeat against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The link with Real arose after the club´s managing director Jorge Valdano was quoted as saying: "Beckham looks like the next big project for us."

United face Real in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu on Tuesday.

And Valdano has insisted the Spanish giants are not interested in entering into a bidding war with Inter Milan for Beckham.

"I don´t know if Inter really want Beckham," Valdano told The Sun newspaper.

"As far as we are concerned, Inter have the green light for Beckham because we are not going to enter any auction."

"Fergie: Hands off Becks "

Alex Ferguson insists he will never sell David Beckham. Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan all want Manchester United star Becks but Old Trafford boss Fergie said last night: "It is totally out of the question. "There is no way we would sell him - or any of our best players." Fergie sent out his hands-off message just three days before United meet Spanish giants Real in their mouth-watering European Cup quarter-final, first-leg clash in the Bernabeu. It is the first time he has spoken about the England skipper´s future since the infamous flying boot incident, exclusively revealed in SunSport. Midfielder Beckham, 27, was furious at the time but it now seems likely he will be staying at Old Trafford.

"Rio: My Kop agony"

Rio Ferdinand refuses to keep his Worthington Cup runner-up medal in the house. The Manchester United centre-back is still angered after the Red Devils crashed 2-0 to Liverpool in Cardiff. And now he and his United team-mates are desperate for revenge when they take on the Kop side at Old Trafford this lunchtime. Alex Ferguson´s team still believe they can win the Premiership title - which would more than make up for last month´s Welsh wobble. Victory would put United on top of the table - and pile the pressure on Arsenal who kick-off at Aston Villa at 3 o´clock this afternoon. Ferdinand, 24, said: "To say the Worthington final was not a good day is an understatement but it has spurred us on to make sure we don´t finish empty-handed. It can still be a great season for us and I think we´ve shown we are capable of raising ourselves time and again when things have gone wrong.
Shaun Custis, The Sun

"Owen ready to wreck Utd"

Michael Owen last night told Manchester United: "Liverpool are going to ruin your season." The England striker claims his side can halt United´s title charge at Old Trafford today - and leave Alex Ferguson´s men worn out before Tuesday´s European Cup clash with Real Madrid. Owen said: "These two matches will dictate whether United´s season goes very well or very badly. They have game after game at the moment so playing us could leave them tired for Tuesday´s match against Real Madrid. It doesn´t really matter to us whether United or Madrid win next week - even though you normally want to see English teams doing well in Europe. But we do care about us playing United and I hope we are going to beat them. Liverpool will do everything in their power to defeat United and then we´ll sit back and enjoy the match on Tuesday."
Mike Ellis, The Sun

"Footie aces in the clear"

Football stars Rio Ferdinand and Michael Duberry will NOT face sex assault charges. Man U’s Ferdinand, 24, and Leeds defender Duberry, 27, were accused of threatening and groping a barmaid at a nightclub. Martin Luther King, 33, was found guilty at Leeds Crown Court yesterday of indecent assault and attempted rape of the 22-year-old. Judge Scott Wolstenholme said there was no evidence the stars were involved.

"Carlos on his clash with mate Beckham"

There is a mischievous look in the eyes of Roberto Carlos as he ponders the thought of facing up to David Beckham in the Bernabeu. It is the most eagerly-awaited duel in the most glamorous tie of the Champions League quarter-finals and yet the Real Madrid superstar has absolutely no doubt who will come out on top. In fact, the Brazil left-back cannot help poking fun at the England captain ahead of the big night. "David is getting used to me winning," says Carlos about a player he clearly admires. "And he´ll have to continue to suffer a little bit. But from defeats you also learn good lessons and Beckham is a great player. We have had many battles and he has not had the better of me yet. We even filmed a Pepsi advert together and in it Beckham scores - but in the end I´m the decisive one."
John Cross, Daily Mirror

"David stays says Fergie"

Sir Alex Ferguson last night dismissed suggestions that David Beckham will be sold. There has been speculation about the England captain´s future ever since he was struck in the face by a boot sent flying by the manager in the wake of Manchester United´s FA Cup defeat by Arsenal. Beckham has been linked with Inter Milan and Real Madrid, but Ferguson said: "There´s no way we would sell him or any of our best players." Ferguson has hailed the next fortnight as the most important of his Manchester United reign and called on his players to once again prove they can be crowned champions. United take on Liverpool today, followed by Tuesday´s Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid, then back-to-back Premiership encounters with title rivals Newcastle and Arsenal. Fergie believes those games will be even more challenging than the climax to the 1999 Treble-winning season. He said: "I can´t think of another period in my time here where we´ve had four games of such huge importance wedged together like this. My players know what they have to do - win our remaining seven games and we´ll be champions."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

interview de Wes Brown ds Red Issue...

"WES’ BIG 10 DAYS "

Story by Editor 4 April 2003

Liverpool, Newcastle, Madrid and Arsenal

Wes Brown is looking forward to the challenges over the next
10 ( or more accurately 12) days:

Speaking to the Evening News he said:

"I have never had a 10 days like this in my career but it is
something to look forward to rather than fear,

"This spell is going to be immense but it´s great,

"You are facing the best strikers around but you want to
prove to everyone that you can do well against them. I know
it will be tough but this is the kind of test you want to
put yourself through. This is where you have to show why you
are here at Manchester United.

"I think Raul and Ronaldo is arguably the best combination
around at the moment. It is a great partnership and then you
also have to consider the back up they have got in Zinedine
Zidane and Luis Figo.

"They are great players but that is what I have always
wanted to play against, so why worry about it? There is no
better place to prove yourself than in the Bernabeu against
that kind of quality. It is going to be the biggest game of
my life if I play.

"It would be a feather in my cap to keep that kind of list
of strikers quiet, if I am chosen to play in the next four
matches. Slip up against this kind of striker and they´ll
punish you. Everything has to be perfect."

Wes knows all about Michael Owen:

"Michael is a class player. He has been in that bracket
from when he first came into the Premiership. He proves that
in big games all the time.

"Tomorrow is a big match, he shines and thrives on this kind
of stage. He always has done and he´ll be the one to watch.

"He has lots of pace. If they ball gets knocked over the top
if you are not on your toes then he is likely to get there
first. He can cause you untold problems because of his pace
and once he´s in the position then his finishing is superb.”

"DUFF CAN GO " ( RED ISSUE)

Story by Editor 4 April 2003

Souness is prepared to sell United target

Speaking in the Lancashire Evening Post, Souness said:

"As we speak, we have had no offers for Damien and we don´t
want any offers for him, it´s as simple as that,

"But if someone came in and offered us ridiculous money,
then we´d have to be realistic about it. On top of that, if
the boy wanted to go, it would be very difficult to hold
onto him.

"But I can only repeat, we´ve had no offers as we speak."

Souness also confirms that United and Liverpool were looking
at Duff last summer:

"At the end of last season there were people sniffing around
him, namely Manchester United and Liverpool, and I think
each of them was worried about who was going to take him at
the time,

"But we made it very plain that they´d have to pay a lot of
money for him and nothing has changed since."

The ex-Liverpool player will not stand in the Irish winger’s
way if he does want to leave:

"Ultimately, if the boy wanted to go and we got the right
price for him, then I think we´d have to be fair to Damien,

"Everyone wants to play at the highest level and if he got
the opportunity to play in the Champions League, then it
would be very hard to say no.”

=>qq infos de "lequipe.fr".........
