Keane set for United farewell

Roy Keane is set to close the chapter on his Manchester United career on Tuesday when they tackle Celtic for his testimonial.

The United legend will play half the game for The Red Devils and half the contest for the Scottish champions.

The Bhoys midfielder left United under somewhat of a cloud after sensationally leaving the club by mutual consent last year.

The Irishman had an impressive twelve-and-a-half years at United winning every trophy going under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, prior to his shock exit.

Keane believes the event will give him ´closure´ and the chance to say goodbye to the club´s supporters and with over 73,000 expected, it is sure to be an emotional night.

Despite falling out with Keane over his outspoken comments on the team´s results, Ferguson is looking forward to what is sure to be a keenly-contested game.

"I´m looking forward to Tuesday´s match," explained Ferguson. "Roy and I enjoyed a great association and had some fantastic years together."

NEC: United will give Jones chance

NEC Nijmegen coach Ron De Groot admits David Jones´s future depends on the midfielders Sir Alex Ferguson signs for Manchester United in the summer.

Speaking to the local media, De Groot hinted there could be other options regarding loan arrivals from Old Trafford if Jones does stay put in Manchester.

The former youth team captain impressed in De Eredivisie after also doing well in a loan stint at Preston.

"Manchester United will get him back to England," said De Groot. "They want to give him a chance in the pre-season.

"As there will come a moment when they sign new players for the midfield, there is a big chance he will return to us.

"But if they need him more there, then he will stay in England.

"It´s currently unknown what their plans are with those five guys who are currently playing in Antwerp [more loanees at United´s feeder club in Belgium].

"Furthermore, I can´t mention any names with players we are currently talking with. Then you can always get the question later on why such a player hasn´t been signed."

De Groot admits Arsenal´s signing of 15-year-old Nacer Barazite, as reported some time ago on skysports.com, is a blow to NEC.

"I think the football academy is a good benefit for us," he continued.

"You just have to take a look at the boy who is leaving us for Arsenal.

"Of course it´s a big loss for our club but you can see our academy has a good name."

Atletico: No Torres bids

Atletico Madrid have again insisted Fernando Torres is not for sale, after the striker was linked to Manchester United.

Reports over the weekend claimed that United were ready to offer cash plus Ruud van Nistelrooy to land Torres in the summer.

Torres is among the best strikers on the continent and has regularly been linked with a move to The Premiership, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United all credited with an interest.

But Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has fielded no enquiries for the Spain international and is adamant Torres will not be leaving Vicente Calderon.

"There has been no offer from Manchester United or any other team for Torres," Cerezo told Marca.

"I have carried on answering the same question for four years. Atletico Madrid does not intend to sell Fernando Torres."

The young hot shot has recently expressed his contentment with life at Atletico, despite the club suffering another season of under-achievement in La Liga.

United, meanwhile, could be in the market for a new striker due to the uncertainty surrounding van Nistelrooy´s future at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy stormed out of the club on Sunday, after being dropped for the game against Charlton Athletic, and there are suggestions that the Dutch hit-man has played his last match for United.

Torres n´est plus à vendre.

Boss Salutes His Best Ever Servant

Sir Alex Ferguson says he is looking forward to a reunion with his best ever servant on Tuesday night when Roy Keane returns to Old Trafford for his testimonial match against Celtic.

The Reds boss insists his former skipper, who left United last November, is "the best player I´ve ever had."

Sir Alex pointed to Keane´s unwavering desire for success and his ability to inspire those around him as the key ingredients which made him stand out from the rest during his time at Old Trafford.

"Roy wasn´t as talented as some of the other players we had at the club like Cantona and Giggs for example, but his obsession with winning and the demand he put on others made him the most influential player in the dressing room," explained the boss.

"He became a great captain through that and to my mind he is the best player I´ve had in all of my time here.

"Over the years when they start picking the best teams of all time, he´ll be in there."

Asked if United will ever be able to replace the midfielder, Sir Alex declared: "I hope so!

"Our club is capable of doing it because we´ve always had great players at United. But it won´t be easy and I must say I haven´t seen anyone so far."

Keane´s performance against Juventus in the Champions League semi-final second leg in ´99 is widely regarded as his best in a red shirt.

Despite picking up a yellow card which would prevent him from featuring in the final, the midfielder did not let the heartbreak affect him as he inspired United to victory.

"It was a selfless display, just wonderful," recalls Sir Alex. "The booking was a really soft one and it was a tragedy he wasn´t able to play in the final in Barcelona."

Towards the end of his United career, some pundits questioned whether Sir Alex should have persisted with the regular inclusion of his captain whose ageing limbs restricted his former powers as a box-to-box midfielder.

"When you´ve got the will you try to get there and keep going," insisted Sir Alex. "Roy would play with broken legs if he could, that´s the kind of person he is.

"I always tell players that they should play as long as they can because they´re the best moments of your life, believe me. Management doesn´t come near playing, I can assure you."

Keane himself was unsure whether to have the testimonial, but he sees it as the chance for a proper goodbye to the club and the fans. “I wasn’t sure I was going to have a testimonial game," he said. "But I thought about it, and I knew it was a chance to have a sense of closure, and for me and the fans to say our goodbyes. I feel it’s the right thing to do.”

Sir Alex is of a similar opinion. He added: "I´m looking forward to Tuesday´s match. Roy and I enjoyed a great association and had some fantastic years together."

Keane won´t make snap decision

Roy Keane says he will take his time before making an announcement on his future.

The veteran Irishman gained ´closure´ on his Manchester United career when over 67,000 fans turned out for his testimonial at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

After playing the first 45 minutes for Celtic and the second half for United, Keane fielded questions on whether he would be calling time on his career.

The fire would appear to still burn in the 34-year-old, but the rigours of professional football have taken their toll on Keane in the last couple of seasons.

"I realise my heart could be telling me one thing and my body another but I am quite relaxed about the situation," said Keane.

"I don´t feel too bad but equally I do not feel as though I have done myself justice at Celtic.

"I have suffered one or two niggling injuries, which could have been influenced by the amount of travelling I have been doing and also a torn hamstring which I am certain came about because of my hip operation.

"Nothing is definite yet but if I am suffering niggling injuries all the time, that is no use to anyone."

Ruud van Nistelrooy was a notable absentee, with the Dutch striker claiming he was banned from attending following a bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Keane spoke to the forward prior to the game and has wished him well, amid mounting speculation that van Nistelrooy will be sold in the summer.

"I did speak to Ruud," said Keane. "It was unfortunate and disappointing he wasn´t here but everyone has their own path to go down.

"I don´t think it is right for me to start commenting on Ruud´s situation because I am no longer at United and I do not really know the goings on.

"But I did get on quite well with him and I do know there are two sides to every story. Maybe one day we will find out what happened.

"Ruud is still under contract to United and I wish him well."

Ruud upset at missing Keane game

Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy said he was "not allowed" to play in Roy Keane´s testimonial.

Speculation continues that the 29-year-old´s United career may be over after he left Old Trafford before Sunday´s game against Charlton.

He had expected to play in Keane´s testimonial against Celtic but instead travelled to a World Cup training camp.

"I wanted to pay my respects to Roy. I wasn´t allowed to so that was the most painful thing," he said.

Keane said he was disappointed his former team-mate missed the game.

"I spoke to Ruud. It was unfortunate and disappointing he wasn´t here but everyone has their own path to go down," said Keane.

"I don´t think it is right for me to start commenting on Ruud´s situation."

"But I did get on quite well with him and I do know there are two sides to every story. Maybe one day we will find out what happened.

"Ruud is still under contract to United and I wish him well."

Meanwhile, Holland coach Marco van Basten called up 17 players for a four-day training camp in Katwijk and added Van Nistelrooy on Sunday.

"Ruud called me on Sunday, explained the whole situation and that he was asked to leave," said Van Basten.

"Because he wouldn´t be playing in the match for Keane we added him to the squad."

Van Nistelrooy found first-team opportunities hard to come by for United in the second half of the season.

The Dutchman drove away before Sunday´s game at Old Trafford, amid reports that he was unhappy at being left on the bench.

Speaking after the game, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "There have been a couple of issues during the week that concerned us in terms of the spirit of the club.

"On such an important day, I felt that Ruud should be left out. We will be discussing it with club directors."

Smith Set September Comeback Date

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Alan Smith’s “amazing approach” to his recovery from the broken leg that ended his season, and revealed he has set a September target for his return to action.

The 25-year-old Yorkshireman suffered an horrific double injury against Liverpool in February, dislocating his ankle and breaking his leg.

He is now without the protective cast and even attempted light jogging at United’s Carrington training base last week.

”Alan may be a bit late for the start of the season,” Sir Alex said. “I would think he will be back towards the beginning of September. But he will be back all right.

”He’s still got a bit of a limp,” the boss added. “But he was out on the training ground last week having a walk around and a little jog.

”He’s got an amazing philosophy and approach to his recovery. It doesn’t bother him at all. There is no mental block there at all.”
