Benfica are considering making a move for Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, but the former Real Madrid coach admits it will be difficult to prise him away from Old Trafford.

The Lisbon club are seeking a replacement for Ronald Koeman and England boss Sven Goran Eriksson has also been on their short-list of candidates.

President Luis Filipe Vieira and director Jose Veiga are working on the situation and have earmarked Quieroz, who was born in Mozambique, for the role so they will bid to persuade Sir Alex Ferguson to part with his number two.

Ferguson allowed Queiroz to head for Real in 2003 because he felt it was the fair thing to do but matters may be different with the team who knocked United out of the UEFA Champions League.

"We want a coach with a guarantee of a super project and Queiroz has the necessary conditions to be the leader from the bench," explained Vieira.

Meanwhile, the United number two admits the offer is tempting but he still has work to do alongside Ferguson.

"Of course it is a pride and an honour to see my name associated with Benfica but I have a commitment that ties me with Manchester United for some time," he told RTPN.

"Benfica are a fantastic institution and have enormous prestige but, at the moment, it´s difficult to decline the responsibilities I have with the club where I work.

"Benfica have a great impact and prestige in the whole world - when we played against them in the Champions League, even in Manchester, it was possible to see this."

Queiroz est encore sollicité pour devenir entraineur, cette fois-ci c´est Benfica qui est demandeur.

Hmm, belle proposition...J´espére qu´il restera mais j´avoue que le choix doit pas être facile.

United rule out Petit bid

Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz has ruled out a move for Benfica midfielder Armando Petit.

The Portugal international is on show at the World Cup in Germany this summer and enjoyed an outstanding campaign in helping guide the Lisbon side to the league title last season.

Although they could only manage a disappointing third-placed finish this time around, Petit was again a mainstay in midfield and impressed during their run to the UEFA Champions League quarter finals.

With United looking for midfield reinforcements, Queiroz was asked by RTPN whether The Red Devils were interested in the former Boavista star.

"Petit is an excellent player," said the United number two. "He has fantastic qualities.

"He will be able to play for many teams in Europe as he´s an excellent athlete but, at this moment in time, he is not an option for Manchester United."

Nevertheless, Queiroz could still be working with Petit next term as he is being strongly linked with the coach´s job at Estadio da Luz.

The former Real Madrid boss is thought to head Benfica´s wanted list, although he has stressed he is under contract at Old Trafford so any decision would obviously be out of his hands.

OSLO PLAY DOWN MIKEL LINK

Lyn Oslo have refused to comment on reports linking John Obi Mikel with a move to Chelsea.

The highly-rated 19-year-old, who switched to Oslo on loan following his move to Manchester United last year, has impressed in Norway and is widely tipped for stardom.

Speculation in Mikel´s homeland of Nigeria has suggested that Chelsea have reached an agreement with United, but Oslo director Morgan Andersen has questioned whether there is any truth in the rumours.

He is more concerned with settling the long-running saga with Manchester United, who Mikel claims duped him into joining from Lyn.

Andersen would like to keep Mikel for as long as possible, but insists that his club is in the dark on the player´s future.

"No comment," Andersen said on the Chelsea reports.

"This issue might be resolved in two days or two years. We are practically the only ones who have tried to solve this issue."

Si c´est ce qu´à dit Infosport concernant Trezeguet, c´est qu´en Italie, on dit qu´il est suivi par le Real, Manchester et Milan ( je suis pas sûr pour Milan mais il y 3 équipes qui le suive).

Le journaliste en Italie a dit que les joueurs de la Juve, de la Fiorentina et de la Lazio risquait de changer d´air très vite avec cette affaire, autant dire qu´il va y avoir du monde sur leurs joueurs cet été.

Pelé a tardivement révélé hier soir qu´il avait refusé une offre de Manchester United l´année de leur premier sacre européen. La plus célèbre icône sportive du monde a annoncé qu´il a eu l´occasion de former avec George Best, Denis Law et Bobby Charlton ce qui aurait été la meilleure ligne d´attaque de l´histoire du football.

Pelé n´avait jamais jusqu´à présent parlé publiquement du désir de United de le signer. 38 ans après le triomphe 4-1 contre Benfica, il en a fait la révélation au cours d´un entretien au Guardian. Le Brésilien a commencé en déclarant qu´il aurait pu rejoindre la Juventus, Milan et le Real Madrid, ainsi que 2 ou 3 clubs mexicains. A la question "étiez-vous tenté par un de ces clubs ?" Pelé s´est exclamé "Manchester ! J´ai même eu une proposition de Manchester United."
"Manchester United ? Vraiment ? Après la Coupe du Monde 70 ?"
"Non, 1968... Leur plus belle équipe."

Pelé a ajouté qu´il avait refusé MU parce qu´il voulait rester au Brésil à Santos. Sa présence à Old Trafford aurait changé l´histoire du foot anglais et aurait accentué la super-puissance de United. Mais il a clairement montré qu´il avait aucun regret : "J´ai dit non à toutes les équipes qui m´ont voulu. Le Real Madrid était la meilleure équipe qui me voulait. Mark Whiley, le conservateur du musée de Manchester United, a confirmé que le club n´a pas été au courant de celà pendant 38 ans. "C´est la première fois que nous en entendons parler," a-t-il dit. Un porte parole de MU a ajouté "Il n´y a rien d´officiel dans nos archives mais le club a toujours essayé d´attirer les meilleurs joueurs du monde et Pelé est clairement dans cette catégorie."

Wilf McGuiness, qui a travaillé avec Sir Matt Busby puis l´a remplacé comme manager en 1969 a dit "Cela aurait été merveilleux si ça s´était produit. C´est la première fois que j´en entends parler mais si il [Busby] avait parlé à quelqu´un d´aussi spécial que Pelé, on peut lui pardonner d´avoir tenu cela aussi secret que possible."
