Cruzeiro play down Kerlon story

Cruzeiro have denied reports that talented prodigy Kerlon is on his way to Manchester United.

The Times claimed the exciting Brazilian, known for balancing the ball on his head whilst running towards goal, was close to sealing a £6 million switch to Old Trafford.

Cruzeiro president Alvimar Perrella has refuted the story by stressing that there have been no approaches for Kerlon or team-mate Edu Dracena, despite being quoted in The Times as confirming contact with a Premiership side.

"In fact, we were not looked for by Manchester, or any other English club, to deal with the sale of Kerlon or Edu Dracena," he told reporters in his homeland.

The Red Devils have been actively scouring Brazil for fresh blood with Fluminense´s teenaged twins Fabio and Rafael agreeing a deal to join the club in three years´ time.

However, any concrete deal for Kerlon looks to be a long way off at the moment.

South American sources also quote a United scout as stating: "I found this news article odd because The Times is a serious newspaper and does not invent news. This information, with certainty, was planted by an agent."

Petit: United do want me

Benfica midfielder Armando Petit claims he is aware of interest from Manchester United, despite denials from assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

The United number two dismissed suggestions that the Portugal international is one of the candidates to arrive at Old Trafford this summer.

However, Petit, a busy and energetic runner, reckons he has an opportunity to link up with international colleague Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester next term.

"I am happy at Benfica but I know of the interest from Manchester United and other teams," he told the media whilst preparing for Portugal´s World Cup campaign.

"Anyone would like to play for Manchester United.

"If a proposal appears that is good for me and Benfica, I have the possibility to leave.

"My future will be resolved in the next two or three weeks."

Queiroz, himself a target for Benfica, has already shot down the likelihood of the 29-year-old coming to United with Mahamadou Diarra understood to be Sir Alex Ferguson´s number one target.

Lyon signed midfielder Jeremy Toulalan for €7 million (£4.75 million) on Friday and are expected to allow Diarra to leave if United follow up their interest with a massive offer.

Petit´s Benfica team-mate Manuel Fernandes has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with the midfielder claiming interest from United.

Fernandes said: "I am happy with the news because United is a super club, but officially I have not received any offer."

Ruud in the dark over situation

Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted he is at a loss to explain why he has so spectacularly fallen from grace at Manchester United.

The striker has proved himself one of the best strikers ever to grace The Premiership since his move from PSV Eindhoven in 2001.

His position at the forefront of the club´s attack has been unquestioned for four years, but he has found himself on the outside looking in for the last six months and was ordered away from the club´s hotel prior to the final game of the season.

Van Nistelrooy´s relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to be at breaking point, but the Dutchman does not know the reason why.

"I know a lot of people in Manchester don´t understand it, well it is the same for me," he said.

"I love Manchester United. That is why I don´t really understand it.

"What has happened has happened. I have a World Cup in front of me, so I need to try and forget about it and move on.

"But one thing I want to make clear is that I went (from the hotel) because I had to go, not because I went myself."

A clutch of Europe´s bigger hitters are monitoring the situation at Old Trafford with interest, but van Nistelrooy says no decision will be made on his future until after the World Cup finals.

"I have two years left on my contract and if things stay the way they are at the moment I will still be at the club next season," he said.

"But I am not naive and the fact I wasn´t involved in the last Premiership game or Roy Keane´s testimonial was not a good sign, but nothing is going to happen until after the World Cup."

Van Nistelrooy says his travails at club level are not affecting his World Cup preparations.

"Of course it is easy to concentrate on my football," he said. "We have the World Cup coming up.

"I don´t feel there is more pressure on me because I know Marco van Basten (Dutch coach) has confidence in me, as do the other coaches, my team-mates and the supporters, which is all I need.

"I actually feel quite good. I have come into a team that is very motivated to do well. I am part of that and I feel happy with it.

"In that sense, I can forget what happened and try to move on, which is what I am doing."

Internazionale are one of the teams in the frame for van Nistelrooy and reports in Italy suggest the Nerazzurri have offered Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso as makeweight in a deal.

The Red Devils are eager to strengthen their midfield and such a deal could prove attractive to Ferguson

UNITED DISPOSE OF ROONEY DOCTOR

Manchester United have sacked the doctor responsible for Wayne Rooney´s recovery from a metatarsal injury, according to newspaper reports.

Dr Mike Stone has been at Old Trafford for ten years but saw his time at the northern giants ended after an internal dispute.

Stone had been overseeing Rooney´s bid to get fit for the World Cup finals, giving updates to England counterpart Leif Sward, and leaves the club with the striker set to undergo a crucial scan on Thursday.

The nation´s hopes are resting on the results of the test which will determine whether Rooney´s rapid recovery has enabled him to partake in the group stages, with previous reports indicating he could even be ready for the opening game against Paraguay.

However Dr Stone will no longer be the man to guide Rooney to fitness after the club confirmed his departure.

"There was a difference of opinion which involved neither football nor medical issues and, as a result, Mike Stone felt it was better that he left the club," a club spokesman told The Sun.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has always been keen to play down talk of Rooney recovering quickly, and there have even been suggestions that United do not want to see their most valuable asset turn out in Germany.

However club captain and England right-back Gary Neville has rubbished such claims, insisting United will treat the case fairly and that they have their fingers crossed Rooney will recover.

"If he´s fit and he´s ready to play for England, that will be fantastic - fantastic for England and Manchester United," said Neville.

"It´s great for everybody if he´s fit and ready to go. On the other hand, if he´s not fit, I know United won´t let him come away and rightly so. If he is fit, they will. They´re a fair club.

"There have been some suggestions that United don´t want him fit for England, and speaking from being an experienced player at United, I can say that´s absolute rubbish.

"He is one of their players and they look after their players but they know Wayne´s ambitions as a player and that he wants to play in the World Cup.

"He´s in the best hands at United, in the best environment because he´s there with no players or media around him, and it will be quiet.

"Wayne will be alone with the physio looking after himself and making sure he gives himself the best possible chance."
