Bobby Robson last night taunted Alex Ferguson over Newcastle’s bid for Wayne Rooney - claiming the biggest club in Britain COULD NOT afford him. Robson hit out after allegations that the Toon’s £20million offer for the England whizkid was part of a plot hatched by Everton to get the price up. Robson crowed: “Manchester United can’t buy Rooney. The most famous and richest club in the country can’t buy him! I know Alex Ferguson would love him, so why don’t they make an offer for him? All I can tell you is that we’ve made a £20m cash offer for Rooney. It’s been rejected — but I also understand the chairman has left the bid on the table. The bid is £20m and it is genuine. You could buy a club for that amount but Wayne Rooney’s not just another striker.”

Everton believe they can hang on to Wayne Rooney - by clinching a massive cash boost from a Russian tycoon. The Goodison side have already rejected a £20million bid for Rooney, 18, from Newcastle, while Manchester United are also closely monitoring the situation - but Old Trafford supremo David Gill has already ruled out a big-money move. The Goodison board are due to meet in the next 24 hours and are expected to finalise a £20m cash injection from Russian businessman Anton Zingarevich.

Alex: We must be careful
Alex Ferguson has told his team to stop being careless. The Manchester United boss fears it is the one weakness that could lead to his side’s downfall this season. And if they slip up at Old Trafford tonight against Dinamo Bucharest, they could be in for a very nasty surprise. Ferguson said: “There is always a danger with our team that they can be careless. It is the nature of the way they are, always wanting to go forward. But the threat of the counter-attack is always there in games - and it is there with Dinamo Bucharest. I should put a big flag in the middle of the pitch before some games, saying ‘Danger! Beware of counter-attack’. I do not know how many times over the years we have be undone by a counter-attack, certainly a few. I just hope we’ve come far enough to protect ourselves now.”

Fergie gets Kleber woth United flop
The forgotten man of Old Trafford gets the chance to relaunch his Manchester United career tonight. Brazil midfielder Kleberson lit up the 2002 World Cup, signed for United, then disappeared. But the South Americamn is back in business against Dinamo Bucharest and aims to inspire United´s charge into the Champions League group stages. " He had two long-term injuries and when you are a young lad coming from Brazil, it can take its toll," said his manager Sir Alex Ferguson. " But he has been training well and we´ll give him his go tonight."

Fergie won´t risk Saha
Sir Alex Ferguson will resist the temptation to restore Louis Saha to Manchester United´s line-up for tonight´s Champions League qualifier with Dinamo Bucharest. Saha returned to full training this week, allaying fears of a long lay-off with knee ligament damage. But Ferguson revealed: " I thought about putting Saha on the bench, but we´re more likely to see him at the weekend."

Dinamo Bucharest coach Ioan Andone has written off his team’s hopes of toppling Manchester United tonight. The Romanians head for the second leg at Old Trafford needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit if they are to reach the Champions League group stage. But Andone admits his team are not yet firing on all cylinders this season and are already planning to drop down into the UEFA Cup. He said: “We are thinking more about our future opponents in the UEFA Cup. Our problem is we’re a long way off the displays we showed last term. But playing United is the biggest opportunity for us to get over our bad spell - by playing well against a great team in a great stadium.”

D´Urso is dismissed
The Premier League have replaced referee Andy D´Urso for Manchester United and Everton´s Bank Holiday Monday clash. Dermot Gallagher will take over at Old Trafford as his Essex colleague faces a Football Association charge. D´Urso yellow-carded Blackburn midfielder Barry Ferguson twice in the defeat by Southampton but failed to send him off. The official mentioned his mistake in his report but the FA have charged him with " less than proficiently applying the laws of the game".
