Roon will complete jigsaw
Alex Ferguson reckons Wayne Rooney will complete his best squad since winning the Treble. And Fergie has fired a warning to Chelsea and Arsenal that Manchester United are still very much in the ball game. The United boss believes he now has the blend of youth and experience just right - and Rooney, 18, will be the icing on the cake. Whether they can emulate that Treble-winning team of 1999 is another thing - but Ferguson has every confidence they will. He said: “We are hoping to get an agreement with Everton over Wayne Rooney. If we do sign him I will be very happy with the squad we have got here. I believe it will be just as strong as we had in 1999. Both squads have really good talent, although it is difficult to compare players.”

Fergie’s good for Roon
David Beckham has told Wayne Rooney: You can rely on Alex Ferguson to set you on the right road at Manchester United. England skipper Becks’ advice came on the day Rooney, 18, hit Everton with a transfer request. Rooney said: “I want to join a club that is playing in Europe every year.” He will opt for a dream £25m move to United ahead of Newcastle. And Becks admitted: “I’ve always been grateful for guidance Sir Alex Ferguson gave me and never criticised it. When players go through tough times, he is a very strong person. He believes players in his team and at United should be looked after.”

Wayne’s making a mistake
David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney will not find the grass any greener in Manchester or Newcastle than he does on Merseyside. Everton chief Moyes gave the teenage sensation his big chance in the Premiership aged just 16 - but now has to accept he will lose him. The Goodison boss admitted: “I feel disappointed he is not staying longer. I still believe that would be right for his career. Wayne has had an awful lot very young and I would prefer him to stay here. I keep referring back to Torres at Atletico Madrid. He’s a top player and he’s staying where he is, learning the ropes. I think Wayne could do the same. Most people out there actually believe the best thing for Wayne is to stay at Everton.”

Newcastle not giving up
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd insists he has not conceded defeat in the Wayne Rooney race. Rooney wants to join Manchester United but Newcastle have set aside £30million to win his signature. Shepherd said: “Newcastle aren’t shrinking violets and I would put my house on it being sorted out by transfer deadline day next Tuesday. Everton must decide.” Everton’s problem is that, even if Toon go to £30m, Rooney can demand to move to Old Trafford for less.

Wise up Roon
Arsene Wenger admits Wayne Rooney could have a major impact on the Premiership race with Manchester United - if he cleans up his act. The Arsenal boss concedes £25million Rooney will be a fantastic signing for United and could be the missing piece in Alex Ferguson’s title jigsaw. Yet Wenger insists all top players must have a clean lifestyle, something hardly applicable to the prostitute-loving England teenager. Wenger said: “I don’t know how Rooney is behaving off the field but at the top level, you have to deal with your private life. That is part of the success of a top player, to have a clean life. The talent is there for him to be a great player. It could have an impact on the title.”

This pair are hell
Jeff Winter nearly choked on his whistle the day Alan Smith signed for Manchester United. For Winter reckons a combination of the £7million striker on the pitch and Alex Ferguson on the touchline is the referee´s ultimate nightmare. Winter said: " Fergie´s mood is completely results driven. He explodes when things aren´t going well and can take it out on refs - whether they deserve it or not. Smith is almost impossible to control. With some players if you dish out a yellow card, it calms them down. But with Alan it tends to go the other way. Smith is a lovely, softly-spoken lad off the pitch - but he´s a snarling, aggressive bundle of trouble on it.”
