Blues in pole position for Tiago

Chelsea appear favourites to land Benfica midfielder Tiago, as rivals Barcelona have claimed they do not have the financial muscle to enter into a bidding war with The Blues.
New Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has earmarked Tiago as the ideal player to bolster his midfield, but Barcelona emerged as rivals bidders last month.

The Portugal schemer claims to have been made offers from a host of clubs, but said he would leave the final decision to Benfica.

It would appear that Chelsea will win the race for one of Mourinho´s prime targets, as Barca say they will not get drawn into a bidding war with Blues owner Roman Abramovich.

" Benfica will have to lower the price for us," said Barca vice president Sandro Rossell.

" Tiago would be an ideal solution to replace ( Edgar) Davids, but his price has been greatly elevated.

" Barcelona cannot afford to give up so much for Tiago."

JOSE EXPLAINS DROGBA DEVOTION

Jose Mourinho has revealed why he wants to sign Didier Drogba - because he feels the Marseille striker is the closest thing to Arsenal attacker Thierry Henry.

Chelsea´s move for the Ivory Coast star is dependent on whether Hernan Crespo decides to pursue his career away from Stamford Bridge, with Milan on the Argentinian´s trail.

If, as expected, Crespo departs, then Mourinho is hopeful Roman Abramovich´s transfer chest will convince Marseille to change their stance over their top scorer.

" It would depend on Marseille," he told Sky Sports News. " But Drogba is a player I like very much.

" Drogba may be the most similar player to Thierry Henry. Thierry has already proved he is an amazing player, the best player in England, the top scorer and so on, and so on.

" Drogba is in French football and African football, no more than that, but, when I see his qualities - the power, the speed, the direction of the ball, always his first control is to look at the goal, the way he fights and presses for the team. As a striker he can be the first defender.

" I think he is a player who can achieve success in England.

" I can understand Marseille don´t want to sell him, they say that and, at the moment, we haven´t moved for him because we have enough but we will see."

Gronkjaer à Birmingham

L´ailier danois de Chelsea Jesper Gronkjaer a signé un contrat de deux ans avec option pour une année supplémentaire en faveur de Birmingham.

Gronkjaer, 26 ans, était arrivé à Chelsea en provenance de l´Ajax Amsterdam en décembre 2000 pour 11,7 millions d´euros environ. Birmingham l´a engagé pour 3,3 millions d´euros environ.

C´est le huitième départ du coté de Chelsea, José Mourinho adopte en cemoment une politique de régression de l´effectif professionnel.

Jesper Grønkjær joins Birmingham City

Jesper Grønkjær has agreed terms to join Birmingham City today and leaves Chelsea after three-and-a-half years for a fee of £2.2m.

He joined at the end of 2000 for £7.8m and went on to make 77 starts, 42 substitute appearances and score 11 goals. He played in the 2002 FA Cup Final, made one and scored one crucial goal in our 2003 2-1 win over Liverpool which qualified us for the Champions League, and scored in his last three games for us including the Champions League semi-final against Monaco and the 1-1 draw at Manchester United which confirmed us as League runners-up for the first time in our history.

Overcoming many injury problems in his first year he went on to become an increasingly used player even with an increasingly big squad. He won 35 Danish caps while with us, scoring five goals, all his international strikes. In all he has 49 caps.

Chelsea Football Club thanks him for his contribution and always excellent attitude, and wishes him the best for the future.

Chelsea fans will be watching Birmingham with interest this season now they have Jesper, Mario Melchiot and Mikael Forssell in their squad.

Foot - ANG : Ultimatum pour Crespo

Fraîchement nommé entraîneur de Chelsea, le Portugais Jose Mourinho a fixé un ultimatum de 10 jours à l´Argentin Hernan Crespo qui s´interroge toujours sur son avenir.

Absent lors de la reprise de l´entraînement de son équipe, le Sud-Américain s´est attiré les foudres de son nouvel entraîneur qui prépare la tournée de pré-saison aux Etats-unis, le 21 juillet. «Je n´ai pas compris pourquoi Crespo était en retard, a déclaré Mourinho. Il a fait ses excuses, et tout est rentré dans l´ordre. Mais je veux partir aux Etats-Unis avec une équipe décidée. Si Crespo part, nous achèterons un autre attaquant. Mais ça dépend de lui. Je ne veux pas poursuivre avec des joueurs qui ne sont pas à 100% prêts à rester».

Mais Mourinho n´a pas que la tournée américaine en tête. Drogba, dont il a une nouvelle fois fait l´éloge, ferait toujours partie des ses priorités en matière de recrutement. «J´apprécie ses qualités de puissance et de rapidité. Ainsi que la qualité de son premier contrôle et sa combativité pour l´équipe. C´est un joueur qui peut remporter de grands succès».

Chelsea aurait proposé près de 33 millions d´euros pour un transfert du Marseillais Outre-Manche. Une proposition qui ne serait, d´parès Mourinho, plus d´actualité si Crespo restait chez les Blues.

Transferts : Kezman rejoint Chelsea

Chelsea a officialisé lundi soir le transfert de l´attaquant serbe-monténégrin, Mateja Kezman. L´ancien buteur du PSV Eindhoven, 25 ans, s´est engagé pour quatre ans avec le club londonien.

«Je suis très heureux d´être ici. Chelsea est un grand club doté d´une belle équipe» a confié le joueur sur le site internet du club. Auteur de 31 buts la saison dernière avec le PSV ( le record du club), Kezman demande aux supporters des Blues d´être patients. Le joueur retrouvera bientôt ses anciens coéquipiers d´Eindhoven, Arjen Robben et Stamford Bridge.

MILAN WARY OF CRESPO ´LUXURY´

Milan vice president Adriano Galliani is ready to content coach Carlo Ancelotti with the signing of Hernan Crespo, despite fears that the Chelsea striker is a luxury.
Crespo´s future is due to be decided in the coming days and it appears he will either stay at Stamford Bridge or move to Milan.

The Argentine international is set to discuss his future with Chelsea officials and, if he is offloaded, it will pave the way for The Blues to sign Marseille hot shot Didier Drogba.

Blues coach Jose Mourinho appears ambivalent to whether Crespo stays or goes, particularly as the forward has the option of a deal with the Serie A champions.

Rossoneri chief Galliani admits he has misgivings about signing Crespo but is prepared to put his faith in the judgement of the club´s coach - Ancelotti.

" Crespo is a possibility," Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport. " Ancelotti assures me that the purchase of the Argentinian won´t alter the balance of the forward line.

" Practically every day I ask Ancelotti to give me an answer to this; ´Are you really sure you want Crespo?´

" The Argentinian could be a luxury but I can´t refuse to listen to the suggestion of a coach who has won everything in the last two years.

" Ancelotti worked with Crespo when he was at Parma. He knows him very well, as a player and as a man. If there are the right conditions, we will try to content Ancelotti."

Galliani also expanded on Milan´s transfer policy by insisting the club have no plans to sign anything other than top-class players.

He continued: " Milan strengthen themselves only with the arrival of champions. They can be 33-years-old like Cafu, or 22-years-old like Kaka.

" There isn´t space in our squad for ´half-figures´. I´m happy because I give the right squad to Ancelotti.

" Three keepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and six forwards. Six because I consider Serginho as a forward, even if he is different to Shevchenko."

Carlo eager for Crespo arrival

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti would be delighted to land Hernan Crespo on loan from Chelsea - if the Argentina international chooses to walk away from Jose Mourinho´s revolution.
Mourinho has insisted that Crespo´s future is in his own hands, but that he does not want players who are not completely committed.

This has opened up the possibility of a loan to Milan and Ancelotti would be keen to incorporate the former Lazio striker into his stellar squad.

" If Crespo arrives I don´t think he would imbalance the dressing room," said Ancelotti - who took his team to Serie A glory last season.

" Hernan is an intelligent guy, and very determined.

" His arrival would increase the competition for places up front, but I don´t think this is a bad thing.

" If Milan decided to gamble on him I´m sure we would reap the benefits.

" We are talking about a great forward," he told Milan´s television station.

Milan supremo Adriano Galliani was more cautious about Crespo´s arrival, admitting that things are far from settled.

" The Crespo situation is wrapped up in technical and economic uncertainties," said Galliani.

" There is also the fear that it would upset the harmony in the dressing room.

" Anyway, Ancelotti would like to have him and we try to keep our coach happy."

Drogba proche de Chelsea

La nouvelle va faire trembler la Canebière. Didier Drogba, le chouchou des supporters de l´OM, devrait quitter le club phocéen pour rejoindre Chelsea.
L´offre des dirigeants londoniens, de l´ordre de 35 à 40 millions d´euros, aurait quasiment convaincu les dirigeants marseillais de céder leur attaquant vedette, auteur de 19 buts en championnat cette saison.

Drogba, 26 ans, a toujours déclaré qu´il souhaitait rester Marseillais. Transfuge de Guingamp l´été dernier pour 6 millions d´euros, le buteur est sous contrat avec l´OM jusqu´en 2008.

A l´aune de la nouvelle saison qui débute dans trois semaines, le président Christophe Bouchet aurait tenté de différer le transfert au prochain mercato d´hiver. Sa démarche semble avoir échouée. Dès lors, le staff de l´OM a pris contact la semaine dernière en Afrique avec l´attaquant international camerounais de Majorque, Samuel Eto´o.

Vendredi encore, le président de l´OM Christophe Bouchet avait écarté les rumeurs émanant de la presse anglaise concernant un accord avec Chelsea sur le transfert de l´attaquant marseillais.

Plus tôt dans la journée de lundi, le nouvel entraîneur de Chelsea, le Portugais Jose Mourinho, très intéressé par Drogba, avait donné un ultimatum de 10 jours à l´attaquant argentin Hernan Crespo, indécis sur son avenir. Le technicien en avait profité pour faire de nouveau l´éloge du Marseillais Drogba. «J´apprécie ses qualités de puissance et de rapidité. A year at Villa for Carlton Cole

Carlton Cole will spend the 2004/5 season on loan at Aston Villa in a move intended to further his experience of first team football at a high level.

This latest loan for the 20 year-old striker was widely reported as a finalised deal during the day on Monday although it was not the case. Certain clauses in the arrangement still need to be agreed.

That has now happened and on Monday evening, Chelsea was able to confirm that the move will go ahead.

As has become policy in these situations, Cole will not be allowed to face Chelsea in any game during the season. He spent last season on a similar loan at Charlton although injury hampered the early months and he ended his year at The Valley with nine starts, 13 sub appearances and five goals to his name.

Cole will be aiming for increased activity in the coming year under David O´Leary´s management. Aston Villa finished sixth in the Premiership last season but just missed out on UEFA Cup qualification.
