Xebec lost the battle against Roger and Garp because Whitebeard betrayed him and joined them, when Xebec revealed his true goal about "poneglyphes"

Later the crew was dismembered, Linlin gave the Uo Uo no Mi to Kaido, who was upset about that weak devil fruit

He was tracked down by a Marine Admiral (Kong possibly) and his crew, and suddenly managed to evolve in a giant leviathan, before sinking all Marine ships, and earned his title of "strongest creature of the world"

Kaido promised to pursue the "dream" of his former captain Xebec

Back on Onigashima, Linlin tell Kaido that he (Xebec) is still alive, and we can see the shape of YM
