Middle East moguls may finally smash Glazer bid
City financier Keith Harris is in negotiations with a Middles East government to buy out the Irish stake of 29 per cent in Manchester United from John Magnier and JP McManus for £250million and effectively save the club from a takeover by Malcolm Glazer. An insider said: “They would be seeking some sort of sponsorship link with United although naming the stadium is no on the agenda.” Harris’s master plan is to ensure that United are safe not just from Glazer, but any future predators.”

Alex Ferguson is targeting Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing as the long-term replacement for Ryan Giggs. Manchester United boss Fergie sees Downing, one of the few left-sided Englishmen in the top flight, as having a great future. SunSport yesterday revealed Giggs has become unsettled at Old Trafford and that the Welsh wideman, 31, is a £4million target for Newcastle.

Alex Ferguson believes it is time Arsene Wenger learned to lose with dignity. The Arsenal boss labelled Manchester United ‘boring’ for playing five in midfield in their Carling Cup quarter-final clash. Now Old Trafford chief Ferguson has pointed out United’s own behaviour as an example of how to lose in the right way. He said: “We know how to lose. That is part of life and part of the game. When Arsenal won the title at Old Trafford, our supporters applauded them off the pitch. Our directors also made sure there was champagne for them in the dressing room. That is what I mean about knowing how to lose.” Asked if United would be extended the same courtesy at Highbury, Ferguson said: “No comment.”

John O’Shea says Roy Keane’s harsh words are keeping the next generation of Manchester United superstars in check. Keane has questioned the desire of United’s young stars, railing against the ‘big houses, fast cars and Rolex watches culture.’ “What Roy said does keep you on your toes,” said O’Shea. “It makes you look at yourself and wonder whether it’s directed at you. But you know everything Keano says is for the benefit of the individuals and for the good of the club as a whole.”

Fergie: Rules must be clarified
Sir Alex Ferguson says it is time the FA clarified the rules after Robin van Persie escaped a ban. The United boss had called for the authorities to come down hard on the Arsenal attacker after he swung an elbow at Kieran Richardson during Wednesday’s clash at Old Trafford. But soccer chiefs accepted referee Mark Halsey’s yellow card for the incident was enough. Ferguson said: “I am not surprised this has happened in a way because there is some confusion amongst managers as to how the disciplinary procedure works. You look at Lee Hendrie and he gets a three-match ban for intent. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to how the system operates.”

Sir Alex Ferguson last night claimed he has the five most exciting players in the Premiership and that the best is yet to come from his latest United dynasty. Fergie insisted his fab five of Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan Smith can prove the inspiration to land a ninth Premiership title this season. “Those five are as good as anything in the Premiership,” said Fergie. “They can all provide us with great combinations and give us many different options.”
