Gill: No New Year buys
Manchester United are taking a shadow squad to Turkey for the UEFA Champions League tie at Fenerbahce with chief executive David Gill admitting there is unlikely to be any incoming transfer activity in January.
Gill believes Sir Alex Ferguson realises he will not be able to dip into any transfer funds after splashing out on Everton´s Wayne Rooney in the summer.
When asked by Sky Sports News about any New Year signings, Gill replied: " I don´t think so.
" I think he [Ferguson] knows we bought Wayne Rooney in the summer. We´re comfortable with the squad, we have a very full and good squad and we´re comfortable with that."
With United qualified for the knockout stages, Ferguson is willing to seriously risk topping the group due to the calibre of the other sides who will remain in Europe´s premier competition.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo out of the team involved against Southampton has flown to Istanbul with Chris Eagles ( pictured), Phil Picken, David Jones, Paul McShane, David Poole and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake all in the squad.
" It goes without saying [that the Champions League is very important to the club]," continued Gill.
" Everyone knows if they look at our results and analyse them that the Champions League is a key part of our income going forward.
" That´s why we invest heavily in the squad and everything associated with the club so it´s very important."
