Ferguson in Frey for new goalkeeper
Manchester United are poised to move for Parma’s Sebastien Frey in an effort to solve their goalkeeping dilemma. Frey, 34, was expected to leave cash-strapped Parma last summer. Instead he stayed put but now Parma, heavily in debt, are keen to cash in knowing that his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson watched Manchester United record a seventh straight win and then revealed the Red Devils have the scent of glory in their nostrils again.

Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo all converted second-half efforts as United eventually strolled to a 3-0 win over Southampton that keeps them within nine points of Premiership leaders Chelsea.

Though Ferguson admits the gap is a " mammoth" one, it is the type of lead his team have proved so good at closing down the years and few would bet against them doing exactly the same this season, especially now they are hitting top form.

" You can smell the winning mentality all right," said the Scot. " The confidence is back, the training is going well and we´re looking forward to games.

" Clearly, what we have to do is keep is going because we still have a long way to go yet.

" We are still nine points behind Chelsea and pulling that back will be a mammoth task but maybe things will have changed a little by New Year´s Day."

Nev´s rant works wonders
Gary Neville´s rollicking for Cristiano Ronaldo had the desired effect. Neville could claim both a physical and mental ´assist´ as Ronaldo ended three months of frustration by finally breaking his goal duck for the season. He had run 50 yards to bawl his disgust at Ronaldo after he had casually frittered away the easiest of several chances when he tried to lift the ball over Kasey Keller but landed his effort on top of the net. Neville´s blunt message was along the line of ´stop fannying around and give it some welly.´ Three minutes later Ronaldo scored with a sweetly struck volley from 15 yards. He dared not miss because it was put on a plate for him by none other than his harshest critic.

We´re coming to get you, Keane warns the capital rivals
Manchester United are not in the habit of trying to win the championship from a nine-point deficit before most households have put up their Christmas decorations. Try telling that to Roy Keane. Keane believes ruthlessness and patience have been the cornerstone of United´s transformation since they trounced Newcastle 3-1. " It´s important to be patient," said Keane. " The fans can get frustrated and that can get to the players, but the experienced players know how to handle it. I´d rather it was not a nine-point deficit but we´ve been down this road before many times and we will see it take shape in the New Year. We´re concentrating on ourselves and not worrying about anyone else."
Colin Young, Daily Mail

Man Utd 3 Southampton 0
The magnificent seven have got Jose Mourinho glancing over his shoulder. Like a gunslinger from out of town, the stubble-faced chewer has swaggered in and temporarily taken over the manor. But the wily old sheriff at Old Trafford is just biding his time to retake his territory. Alan Smith proved on Saturday that United’s players are prepared to shed blood for the cause and Fergie has marshalled his previously beleaguered troops into a charging cavalry again. Seven magnificent wins in a row in all competitions tells you that the red flag is up and flying high again. Those triumphs have brought with them 16 goals from a side previously struggling to find the target. It is actually 20 goals in nine unbeaten games. United have lost only once now since their 1-0 reverse at Stamford Bridge way back in the middle of August.

Hungry Giggs shows perfect timing
Ryan Giggs could not have picked a more perfect time to deliver emphatic proof of his enduring value to Manchester United - at the ripe old age of 31. " Absolute tosh" is how Sir Alex Ferguson is said to have described a report claiming Giggs was set to follow former United team-mate Nicky Butt to Newcastle in the January transfer window. And on the field, Giggs showed he has not lost any of his hunger with a mesmeric display in Saturday´s 3-0 win over Southampton which proved he is still very much a part of Fergie´s latest Old Trafford dynasty.

Glory boys whistling a happy toon
Non-League sides Yeading and Exeter won the FA Cup lottery yesterday by drawing Newcastle and Manchester United respectively in the third round. Now all Ryman League side Yeading - 20,000-1 to win the Cup - want is for the FA to let them switch their tie to St James´ Park.

United worry over Ruud

Manchester United are sweating over the fitness of striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutch star missed Saturday´s win over Southampton with a calf injury and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already ruled him out of the midweek trip to Fenerbahce.

United are now hoping that he will be fit for next Saturday´s clash with Fulham.

" Ruud has got this injury at the bottom of his calf and it is proving troublesome," said Ferguson.

" We felt we had to leave him out against Southampton and Fenerbahce to try and get him back 100 percent for the Fulham game."

United are now hoping that van Nistelrooy will recover and make it through a hectic Christmas period.

Due to the fact United are already through in the UEFA Champions League, Ferguson will be playing a less than full strength line-up in Istanbul.

" We´ll rest a few of Saturday´s team," said the Red Devils chief.

" The boys who played in the Carling Cup against Arsenal on Wednesday will get a chance. They put on a great show and have been doing well.

" There is plenty of experience there - you would not hesitate to play a back four of Phil Neville, Wes Brown, John O´Shea and Quinton Fortune any time in either a Premiership or Champions League game."

Ferguson admitted that he did not think it was an advantage where you finished in the group stages of the Champions League.

" I am not sure whether it matters if you finish top or second," said Fergie.

" It´s a case of six of one and half a dozen of the other."
