Ferdinand: Lay off Smithy

Alan Smith´s sensational move to bitter rivals Manchester United from the club he loves proves he has the strength of character for Old Trafford. So says Rio Ferdinand who, two years ago, made the controversial £29.1million switch from Elland Road to United and was denounced as a Judas. But, unlike Ferdinand, Smith is leaving more than just another team. Leeds United was part of his heart, the fans adored him as the terrace hero and he supported the club from the day he could walk. And that, says Ferdinand, speaks volumes for Smith’s burning desire to reach the top of his profession. Ferdinand said: “People should understand Alan is doing what is best for his career. I know Leeds fans are upset - they were like that with me when I went. But Alan is doing what is right for him. He deserves a break. He has given everything for Leeds."

Al meets hate mob
Alan Smith saw his emotional farewell to Leeds met with pure hate yesterday. Smith, 23, called in at Elland Road to say his goodbyes to pals before beginning a new life following this week’s £7million move to Manchester United. But, while he was inside bidding farewell to backroom staff and other former colleagues, fans of the relegated Yorkshire outfit were branding their one-time hero a Judas. So intense is the hatred of Leeds´ fans for their trans-Pennine rivals, they instantly accuse anybody who leaves them for Old Trafford of being a traitor.

Al had to go, Robbo tells fans
Paul Robinson has called on bitter Leeds fans to give Alan Smith a break. Smith´s switch to arch-rivals Manchester United in a £7million deal this week has caused a fury in Yorkshire. England reserve keeper Robinson has also moved on from Elland Road - but he has escaped any flak after joining Tottenham. He said: “I think the stick Alan’s been getting is totally out of order. What he has done for Leeds and the way he has performed in a Leeds shirt - I don’t think many people could top that."

Roy back as a hero
Roy Keane returned to a hero’s welcome at Lansdowne Road last night. Matt Holland’s 85th-minute volley brought a victory to celebrate the Manchester United captain’s comeback. It was two years and 11 days since Keane’s last international in a World Cup warm-up with Nigeria. Few thought he would add to his 58 caps following his World Cup walk-out. But the Irish team need him for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers - even though they have lost only once in 14 games under Brian Kerr before Keane’s return.

Nev: Our fab 5 are magnifique
Gary Neville last night warned England’s Euro 2004 rivals: “We’ve got four or five players who would walk into the French side.” The Manchester United defender believes Sven Goran Eriksson’s squad has enough quality to reach the heights in Portugal next month. Neville said: “You talk about a team that wins the World Cup or European Championships needing to have four or five world-class players. We have four or five players who would grace every other team in the tournament. They would get in any other team and I include France in that."

PSG : Heinze vers Manchester United ?

Man Utd close on Heinze

Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze from Paris St Germain.
Although United maintained their policy of making no comment, BBC Sport understands they have agreed a £6m fee for the 26-year-old.

The left-sided central defender is now believed to be discussing personal terms with the Old Trafford outfit.

Heinze´s capture would take United´s summer spending to £13m following the arrival of £7m striker Alan Smith.

Argentina have called Heinze into their squad for the World Cup quallifiers next month.

Before joining PSG, Heinze played for Valladolid in Spain and Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

United would have no problems gaining a work permit for Heinze as he holds a German passport.

Heinze could be an ideal partner for Rio Ferdinand when the England defender returns from suspension, allowing Mikael Silvestre to return to left back.

Chelsea reportedly made a £7m bid for the player in January, but PSG president Francis Graille said at the time Heinze would not be allowed to leave until the end of the season.

Heinze steps out of the shadows

By Tim Vickery

Man Utd close on Heinze

Manchester United transfer target Gabriel Heinze is one of a small but growing breed in Argentine football.

There are those players who have broken into the international squad despite hardly being known by their own home public.

It is a consequence both of the explosion of the global transfer market in the second half of the 1990s, and of Argentina´s economic crisis, which made it attractive for players to leave at an ever earlier age.

It meant that before the recent World Cup qualifier at home to Ecuador, Heinze´s 5th cap and his first start in a competitive international, the Argentine press had to introduce the defender to their readers.

" I left Argentina after just eight games with Newells Old Boys," said Heinze at the time, " and I went to Valladolid, a small club in Spain.

He´s a tough marker, he´s quick, is a good striker of the ball and heads well in both penalty areas

Le Mans´ Argentine forward Fernando D´Amico

" So those who say I am an unknown in Argentina are quite right. But now I feel that the gamble I took is paying off, and I´m proud of what is happening with my career."

He has been highly praised for an excellent season with Paris Saint Germain.

" For me he´s the best defender in France," says Fernando D´Amico, an Argentine who plays for Le Mans.

" He´s a typical European style defender. He´s a tough marker, he´s quick, is a good striker of the ball and heads well in both penalty areas.

" A defect? When he plays at full-back he doesn´t get up and down the pitch."

In the event, Heinze had some problems with the pace and power of Ecuador striker Carlos Tenório.

But the Argentine press concluded that he had stood up well against a difficult opponent, and he is likely to retain his place for the trip to Brazil early next month.

The game, in Belo Horizonte, will provide an atmosphere that he doesn´t see too often in the French football.

" It is an important league," he says, " but the only really hot games are those against Olympique Marseille."

If his move to Old Trafford goes through that is not a complaint he is likely to be making next season.

CHASE FOR MONACO ACE SET TO HOT UP

Manchester United and Juventus are understood to be ready to slug it out to acquire the services of Monaco full back Patrice Evra.
The France international has enjoyed a stunning campaign and played a major role in the club reaching the UEFA Champions League final.

Evra was also named Ligue 1´s Young Player of the Year and his form has attracted admiring glances from the continent´s biggest clubs.

Italian titans Juventus have been long-term suitors of the 23-year-old and are rumoured to have offered €8 million to Monaco several weeks ago.

The Red Devils are also reportedly keen on the left back and have been watching his progress this term with interest.

Evra is contracted to Monaco for a further three years but, after scaling such heights with the Principality side this term, may decide a move abroad will be beneficial to his career.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint Germain continue to be on the trail of Evra´s team-mate Jerome Rothen, who is another to have revelled on the European stage this season.

Rothen has regularly stated it would fulfil a dream to play for PSG and Vahid Halilhodzic is expected to try to tempt the midfielder to Parc des Princes.

Monaco would be reluctant sellers but an offer in the region of €8 million may prove difficult to refuse, if PSG can raise sufficient funds.
