The 30-year-old Brazil-born Spain international admitted he would prefer the move to go through but is not raising his expectations.

Senna told Diario AS: "Either there could be an agreement and I could move to Manchester but if it is not like this, then let nobody think that I would be annoyed to stay at Villarreal.

"This is my home, no less, and I have been here for several years and if I have to stay I will do so happily," said the player who joined the club from Sao Caetano in 2002. "Furthermore the club has kept the door open at all times.

Skysports.com understand that Manchester United have emerged as favourites to sign long-time target Mahamadou Diarra from Lyon.

Real Madrid have been in pole position to snare the Mali international for some time but it is believed that United have rejoined the chase for his signature and their bold move could be decisive.

Although Diarra has spoken of his desire to play for Real, it is believed that he would not turn down the chance to head for Old Trafford if the two clubs can agree on a fee.

Lyon have stressed their determination to keep Diarra, who has been a key figure in their side since arriving from Vitesse Arnhem, but they have already bagged midfielders Kim Kallstrom and Jeremy Toulalan this summer.

Furthermore, Paris Saint Germain´s Modeste M´Bami is also being considered as a reinforcement for the Ligue 1 champions.

There is the belief that a deal can be agreed before the transfer deadline at the end of August as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a long-term replacement for Roy Keane. Villarreal´s Marcos Senna remains another midfielder on the Carling Cup holders´ hit-list but it is understood that Diarra has been the top target all summer.

Wayne Rooney has admitted that he can understand why Cristiano Ronaldo acted the way he did during England´s World Cup exit at the hands of Portugal.

Rooney was sent off during England´s quarter final defeat, having stamped on Ricardo Carvalho, but the English public rounded on Ronaldo for the way in which he remonstrated with the referee moments before his Manchester United team-mate was given his marching orders.

Ronaldo was then caught on camera winking at the Portugal bench, actions which drew further criticism, and it led to a storm of controversy in both countries.

The Portuguese winger´s future at Old Trafford had even been called into question, but he returned to training without incident and Rooney now claims he has drawn a line under the events of the summer.

Rooney has admitted he was disappointed to see Ronaldo attempt to influence referee Horacio Elizondo´s decision but is aware that, on the day in Gelsenkirchen, they were not team-mates.

"We were fine," Rooney told Sky Sports News. "I spoke to him on the night of the Portugal game.

"I am not going to lie, I was disappointed with the way he ran over to the ref but, at the end of the day, we were not team-mates on that day, we were rivals, and I wanted to win and he wanted to win and we just have to get on with it.

"Hopefully we can do well for Manchester United together."

Rooney claims his relationship with Ronaldo has not suffered as a consequence of the events at the World Cup and feels his club colleague should have scooped the Young Player of the Tournament award which was bestowed on German star Lukas Podolski.

"When we got back we were fine," noted Rooney. "We talked as normal and got in with things as normal. There was no problem.

"There were a lot of press outside, there were helicopters over the training ground and I don´t know what they were expecting to see.

"The thing that disappointed me is that Ronaldo should have won the Young Player of the Tournament, but I think that with all the criticism he got he had it taken away from him.

"I was disappointed and everyone at the club was disappointed for him.

"He had a good tournament and I don´t think he should have had it taken away because of that."

Rooney would appear to be happy with his lot at Old Trafford, as he is keen to thrash out a new contract.

"I am perfectly happy here and I am looking to sign a new contract rather than do anything else," added Rooney. "I want to stay at the club and am happy at the club."
