Reds set for Rooney re-think?

Peter Spencer

RUUD van Nistelrooy´s early-season absence could lead to an Old Trafford rethink over the timing of any move for Wayne Rooney.

England´s Euro 2004 hero is set to sign a £50,000 a week five-year deal at Everton with a proposed escape clause should another club make a big-money offer.

Everton manager David Moyes, who watched Boca Juniors play PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford last night with Rooney´s agent Paul Stretford, is desperate to hold on to his prize asset but could yet be forced to sell.

Rooney´s " escape clause package" would leave the way clear for United to pounce.

And with United now losing Ruud van Nistelrooy as well as back-up striker Ole Gunner Solskjaer, as well as question marks over Louis Saha´s Achilles problem, Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to have put Rooney back on top of the United agenda.

United have refused point blank to pay Everton´s £30m asking price but the Goodison club are well aware his value could shrink if Rooney is advised to play out the two years left on his current deal.

Rooney, who is recovering from a foot injury sustained in Portugal, has stressed he wants to stay in the north west

Smith crisp
Alex Ferguson is backing Alan Smith to haul Manchester United out of their pre-season gloom. Fergie was dealt the latest blow this week in a depressing month on and off the pitch for the Reds when Ruud van Nistelrooy was ruled out for a month needing a hernia operation. It leaves the Old Trafford boss without eight first-team players for a variety of reasons ahead of the big kick-off tomorrow in the Community Shield clash against Arsenal. But Ferguson says Smith has been a revelation with the enthusiasm he has brought to the United camp. Ferguson said: ? Alan Smith has been absolutely fantastic since he came here, a revelation in fact. He has brought a huge amount of enthusiasm with him to everything we do ? from training to games. He is a winner, there is no doubt about that, and he has got that bit of Yorkshire grit as well.?
Neil Custis, The Sun

Last men standing
Sir Alex Ferguson is facing up to an alarming striker crisis at Manchester United ahead of the new Premiership campaign. The United boss is already without leading forward Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will be sidelined for at least a month following surgery on a hernia injury, and long-term injury victim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And with Louis Saha struggling to recover from a knee injury, it leaves United with new signing Alan Smith and out-of-favour Diego Forlan as their only fit strikers. " The injury to Ruud has come as a shock to us and it´s just added to the problems we´ve got in terms of the number of players already out," said Fergie.

Smith relishing United challenge
Alan Smith is relishing tomorrow?s encounter at the Millennium Stadium so he can pick up his first medal as a senior player. The England man said: ? I?m looking forward to it because I haven?t won a medal, not since I was a kid anyway. I?ve come into a squad where people have won cups and championships. Yet it is still amazing to see how hungry they all still are. It is clear from the first day you walk in here that they want that title back and I want to help them get that. I have settled in really well and I just can?t wait for the season to start. I?ve played with a lot of top strikers and the thought of playing with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha is very exciting.?
Neil Custis, The Sun

Nev: Only a fool would reject United
Gary Neville was referring to Alan Smith, but the unequivocal statement from Manchester United?s outspoken defender could just as easily have been directed towards Wayne Rooney. ? I?m glad Alan Smith has come here. Only fools turn down United,? said Neville. ? Alan?s been very courageous and I admire him for the decision he?s made. It?s a brave one, but he won?t regret it ? it will change his life.?
Chris Wheeler, Daily Mail

Ole has knee op to save career
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will today undergo an operation which could make or break his career. The Manchester United striker missed most of last season with a knee injury and suffered a recurrence of the problem ahead of the new campaign. The 31-year-old will go under the knife in a bid to cure the long-standing injury and boss Sir Alex Ferguson remained optimistic about the Norwegian´s chances of a full recovery. Fergie said: " Ole will have the operation which we hope will cure the problem once and for all. We´re not sure what the problem actually is but we are quite optimistic about it.?

Becks: Strange without Scholes
David Beckham insists the England team will welcome back Paul Scholes if he changes his mind over retiring. Scholes announced his shock decision to quit international football this week after seven years as one of England?s top stars. The Manchester United midfielder, 29, wants to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his club career. England skipper Becks said: ? If he changes his mind he would be welcomed back with open arms by everyone. I haven?t spoken to him about his decision but I wish him luck. I?m sure it wasn?t a decision made lightly. Paul was an important member of the squad for many seasons and always made a brilliant contribution.?

Fergie warning to Arsene
Alex Ferguson last night taunted Arsene Wenger by telling him: Real Madrid always get their man. Arsenal boss Wenger is battling to hold on to skipper Patrick Vieira. But Manchester United chief Fergie has warned his arch-rival the long-running saga is likely to end with the France midfielder heading for Spain. He said: ? When Real Madrid get involved you can never be too sure what is going on. It is a long-running procedure and, in the end, they just seem to wear clubs down.?

Johnsen joins Saints
Ronny Johnsen has joined Southampton on a week?s trial. The former Manchester United defender, 35, was released by Aston Villa last season.

Ferguson eyes pride test

Arsenal and Manchester United clash for the first time this season in Sunday´s Community Shield and Sir Alex Ferguson believes there is plenty to play for.
" Prestige comes into it, pride comes into it, so it´s bound to be competitive," said the United boss ahead the season´s curtain-raiser.

" When Manchester United play Arsenal it can never be anything different.

" Although I don´t think it´ll be a barometer for what will happen over the season, history has proved that."

Ferguson added: " Sunday´s game is between two of the biggest clubs in the country."

All we can do is hope to get through Sunday´s game without any more hiccups

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson

With their Champions League and Premiership campaign starting next week, Ferguson will be hoping not to aggravate the team´s injury list.

Ruud van Nistelrooy ( hernia), Kleberson ( Knee) and Ole Solskjaer ( knee) are among the absentees for this weekend´s tie.

" We´re not in the best shape," Ferguson admitted on Friday.

" All we can do is hope to get through Sunday´s game without any more hiccups."

The injuries and busy schedule could give Ferguson the chance to field some of his teenage stars, such as 17-year-old central defender Gerard Pique from Barcelona.

" I have no problem putting youngsters in the first team," he added.

" Two things tell me - first of all the supporters want it, and traditionally the club demand that young players should be given their chance if they´re good enough."

MADRID PLOTTING ROONEY RAID

Real Madrid are reported to be planning a shock raid on Everton for star striker Wayne Rooney.
Reports emanating from Spain suggest that Real are lining up a lucrative offer to try and tempt Everton into selling Rooney.

Rooney´s future at Goodison Park remains uncertain as he has still to sign the new deal on offer to him from Everton.

Spanish radio are claiming that Real are now waiting in the wings to see if Rooney signs his new deal and are ready to offer him the chance to move to El Santiago Bernabeu.

Real are searching for a major signing and with their move for Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira stalling they could switch their attention to Rooney.

Rooney´s exploits at Euro 2004 for England have made the young striker a top target for several of Europe´s top clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea.

Any move to Real seems unlikely as Rooney is out of action until September and a move to Spain may not be in his thoughts as yet at such a young age.
