Giggs Hopes Shield Defeat Is A Premiership Omen

Ryan Giggs is hoping that history repeats itself yet again following United´s Community Shield defeat against Arsenal.
Traditionally, the winners of the Shield have failed to win the league the following season, and Giggs is more than happy to accept yesterday´s loss if he is clutching another Premiership medal next May.

Giggs said: " Every time I have lost in the Charity [Community] Shield we have gone on to win something big, so hopefully that can continue and repeat itself."

" It was disappointing to lose but it meant we got another game in before the Champions League qualifier on Wednesday, we have to take the plus points out of that and it meant a lot of the lads getting another game getting some fitness under their belt.

" The bigger picture is Wednesday´s game then Sunday´s trip to Chelsea. We have a hectic start to the season."

United find themselves desperately short of players ahead of Wednesday´s Champions League trip to Bucharest, but Giggs would rather soldier through the crisis rather than bleat about it.

" It´s something we have just got to get on with," he said. " We have a big squad and while it´s disappointing with injuries and the Olympics and Copa America, and the number of reasons why players are missing, we have enough players there.

" We put out a team which was capable of winning on Sunday and we will do the same on Wednesday.

" There were a lot of players out there on Sunday who needed a game like Quinton Fortune and Darren Fletcher and me as well.

" I´ve only played not even two games really, so it was good to start and get 45 minutes. We are edging towards match fitness and sharpness which is what you want."

Macari Warns Against Complacency In Romania

Lou Macari insists that United must beware complacency as they travel to Romania to face Dinamo Bucharest.

The ManUtd.com columnist watched Dinamo oust Zilina from the Champions League en route to Wednesday´s first-leg, and reckons the Romanians are no mugs.

He said: " You´ve always got to be wary when the first leg is away from home, no matter who you´re playing.

" Normally the teams at this stage are of a poor quality, but Dinamo aren´t one of those sides that are in the competition to make up the numbers. They´re not a team that´s got in the back door from a nation that doesn´t produce good teams.

" Romanians have always had good sides and I would think that it´ll be a little bit tricky on their home ground, although I don´t see there being any trouble at Old Trafford."
Macari pinpoints two strikers as Dinamo´s danger men, but reckons that United may be able to exploit a rookie goalkeeper.

He said: " The two upfront did okay against Zilina - Danciulescu and Niculescu. They did ok on the night and got through a number of times. Danciulescu scored the winner in both legs, so he´s one to watch out for.

The goalkeeper, as we know, was sent off so the rookie keeper will come in. He had three things to do during his time against Zilina - he dropped a couple and was rooted as Zilina hit the post.

" I´d like to think he may be a weak link when we play them."

Jimmy Davis: One Year On

The latest generation of young Old Trafford talent has gatecrashed the first team scene this pre-season, but spare a thought for one notable absentee.
On 9 August 2003, United´s promising 21-year-old prodigy Jimmy Davis was killed in a car accident.

The likes of Spector, Eagles, Richardson, Bardsley and McShane have recently pushed their claims for first-team action and, but for the accident, Jimmy would almost certainly have been among that crop.

The young striker spent periods on loan at Swindon, Antwerp and Watford. He made one senior start for United, against Arsenal in the League Cup on Bonfire Night in 2000.

Swindon and Redditch United, Davis´ hometown side, recently staged a match for the ´Jimmy Davis Memorial Trophy.´ The event is set to become annual, and will raise funds for local junior football clubs.

That follows on from United´s FA Cup triumph last season, which featured a moving tribute to Jimmy as the entire squad donned ´Davis 36´ shirts as they collected the trophy.

Following the moving display, Sir Alex Ferguson said: " Jimmy was a young and bubbly character, someone that everyone wanted to be around. He was bright, innovative, and showed great potential as a player.

" Jimmy is still in our thoughts every day, which is why at the FA Cup Final we wanted to show his family and the fans that he is still part of Manchester United."

Please feel free to post your tributes to Jimmy and his family on Talking Reds.

Solskjaer could miss season

Manchester United´s Norwegian striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could miss the whole of the coming season with a knee injury, the club have announced.
The official club website says he underwent surgery in Gothenburg on Sunday, which revealed persistent damage to his right knee cartilage.

" He will undergo further treatment but it is likely Ole will miss the whole of this season," said a club spokesman.

The 31-year-old missed much of last season with similar problems.

News of the Norwegian´s injury comes as another blow to a Manchester United camp that has endured a torrid start to the new season.

Fellow strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha have already been ruled out of the start of the Premiership campaign by injuries, and they lost the FA Community Shield to rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

New signing Alan Smith is expected to lead the line when they face Dinamo Bucharest in a third-round Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.

Ole out for season

Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has received another huge blow as his knee injury will probably rule him out of the entire season.

The Norwegian marksman missed virtually all of the last campaign with a knee problem and it is a similar injury which has ruined another year.

Solskjaer was suffering with his knee during pre-season and it has now been confirmed that it is cartilage damage.

A club spokesman confirmed the news through a statement on the club´s website.

" Ole Gunnar Solskjaer underwent an arthroscopy yesterday in Gothenburg," said a club statement.

" This unfortunately confirmed persistent damage to the articular cartilage of his right knee.

" He will undergo further treatment but it is likely that Ole will miss the whole season."

The news will be a huge blow to Sir Alex Ferguson who was looking forward to the Scandinavian attacker playing more of a role in the upcoming season.

Solskjaer´s injury also means that Diego Forlan should now remain at Old Trafford, as his departure would leave Ferguson short up front.

Forlan, along with Ruud van Nistelrooy, Alan Smith and Louis Saha will now carry the attack for United this season.
