" Man Utd in Ronaldinho race"

Ronaldinho is keen to leave PSG
Manchester United will have to fend off the attentions of at least four clubs to capture the signature of Ronaldinho, according to his agent.

Ronaldinho´s agent, Roberto Assis, said Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter are also interested in signing the Brazilian, but he does not know which club the World Cup winner will join.

The mercurial forward is currently at Paris St Germain and new PSG coach Vahid Halilhodzic recently insisted Ronaldinho is not for sale.

But the Brazilian seems certain to leave the French club, with Manchester United understood to be foremost among the contenders.

Barcelona want to sign David Beckham, with Real Madrid also strongly tipped to sign the England skipper.

Ronaldinho´s eventual destination could depend on whether Beckham leaves United and, if he does, who he signs for.

Barca vote on a new president

" I do not know where Ronaldinho is going," Assis, who is also the player´s brother, told Garry Richardson´s Sportsweek programme on BBC Radio Five Live.
" There are five clubs - Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter - and I do not know where he will be playing next season."

But Assis did reveal that he has been in negotiations with United.

" I have spoken to Manchester, it´s a club where I have good contact with Sir Alex Ferguson and I have a good feeling."

It has been widely reported that negotiations between the Brazilian and Manchester United over a £9m move are at an advanced stage.

But Halilhodzic, who recently took over from Luis Fernandez in the PSG hot-seat, is determined to keep the 23-year-old forward as he plans to build a new era at the club.

" My ambition is to build a competitive team immediately even within the current financial situation," the former Lille and Rennes coach told L´Equipe.

" I did not become the manager-coach to separate myself from Ronaldinho"
Vahid Halilhodzic
Paris St Germain coach

" As for Ronaldinho, I am committed and it is a total commitment.
" I did not come to sell PSG´s best players but to build the best possible team.
" In that respect I have the total support of Messieurs Franci Graille and ( Bertrand) Meheut ( the president of TV channel Canal Plus that bankrolls the club).
" I did not become the manager-coach to separate myself from Ronaldinho and ( Argentine player) Gabriel Heinze."

Ronaldinho endured a torrid season at PSG under former coach Fernandez, with whom he had a very public falling-out.

It´s for Real
Manchester United have opened face-to-face talks with Real Madrid over David Beckham. SunSport´s sensational picture shows the moment United managing director David Gill met top Real fixer Pedro Lopez for secret negotiations in Sardinia. United chief executive Peter Kenyon was also at the meeting. Gill flew to the Mediterranean island, where Kenyon was holidaying, by private jet from Liverpool. Friday´s three-hour meeting with Lopez, right-hand man of Real president Florentino Perez, ended with handshakes. The revelations came as Joan Laporta was voted in as new Barcelona president last night. But his promises to bring Becks to the Nou Camp in a £30m deal now appear to be in vain with Real the big favourites to land the England skipper.
Neil Custis and Clodagh Hartley, The Sun

Fergie´s a Becks stabber
George Best has told David Beckham: Manchester United have treated you abysmally. The Red Devils´ legend is appalled at the club´s attempts to offload their superstar without telling him. Best cannot believe United have tried to bank £30million by flogging the England captain to Barcelona and are now involved in hush-hush talks to sell him to Real Madrid. And he feels the way manager Alex Ferguson and the club´s money men, led by chief executive Peter Kenyon, have been trying to cash in on Beckham behind his back has done them no credit whatever.
Eric Beauchamp, The Sun

Name, set ´n match Joan
David Beckham´s incredible pulling power won the Barcelona presidential election last night. Without even saying a word, Beckham got Joan Laporta elected with the highest ever vote for an incoming candidate. Back in April, when the electioneering started, Laporta had only 2.2 per cent of the vote. When news leaked out he had an agreement to sign Beckham, he was suddenly up to 29 per cent. Last night, just days after United confirmed they had ´sold´ Beckham to Laporta, he was voted in with 52.5 per cent, way ahead of initial favourite Lluis Bassat, who had 31.8 per cent. Laporta won a total of 27,138 votes as 51,000 of the 94,000 members of the club voted, the highest turnout ever.
Neil Custis, The Sun

It´s Becks v Fergie
It´s the biggest public relations war since Princess Di took on Prince Charles and the Royal establishment at Buckingham Palace. Manager Alex Ferguson and the board of Manchester United against David Beckham. All parties have their own stories to tell over why the England captain has to be sold as they try to win the sympathy of the nation. Neither side has been prepared to be quoted directly. But both camps are spinning wildly to get their versions of the ´truth´ over to the public. Here´s how they go...
David Beckham: United´s star name has been cruelly and cynically cast aside by the club he adores and has worked all his adult life to help. Behind his back, the player has seen the club publicly accept an offer from a man who was not even in charge of Barcelona at the time the deal was done. He feels he has been treated like ´a piece of meat´ as United put him up for auction to the highest bidder.
Manchester United: The Beckham circus has simply got too big. The board feel that the player has his priorities wrong: his own future as an icon first, followed by playing for England, then United third. He refuses to heed the manager´s warnings over the pressure his celebrity lifestyle brings to bear. The player refused to accept the manager´s explanation for the flying-boot saga and openly showed his defiance by sporting his scar in public.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Best blasts Fergie over Becks
Manchester United legend George Best has blasted Sir Alex Ferguson over his treatment of David Beckham - and pleaded with the England captain to stay at Old Trafford. Best, who walked out on United in 1974, urged Becks to snub the bids made by Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. He was just 27 when a blazing row with boss Tommy Docherty ended his Reds´ career. Yesterday he slammed Fergie´s bid to offload Becks to Barcelona without consulting the player, and said: " I think he has been treated abysmally."
Gary O´Shea, Daily Mirror

Barca go Becks crazy
Joan Laporta achieved the seemingly impossible last night in coming from nowhere to secure the presidency of Barcelona by a landslide margin. The dynamic young Spanish lawyer beat one-time favourite Lluis Bassat by a remarkable 53 per cent to 31 per cent after holding just two per cent of the votes as recently as the start of April. Now he must pull off another miracle in persuading David Beckham that his future lies at the Nou Camp rather than at the Bernabeu with bitter rival Real Madrid. Sandro Rossel, Laporta´s campaign manager and right-hand man, is convinced Beckham can be persuaded.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Madrid´s Real cheek
Manchester United wil reject Real Madrid´s offer of three players plus cash in return for David Beckham. The Spanish club want to offload Fernando Morientes, Pedro Munitis and Geremi - all currently out of favour - and give United around £7million. But United are only interested in hard cash for the England skipper and will turn down any player-plus-cash deal they are offered.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Becks wins Barca vote
David Beckham scored his first triumph as a player on the Spanish football scene last night as Joan Laporta swept to victory in the Barcelona presidential elections. Laporta immediately earmarked Beckham once his victory was confirmed. He said: “I’m celebrating, I’m happy to win and the first thing I will do in the morning is to talk to David Beckham’s representatives to arrange a meeting with the player as soon as he gets back from his trip to the Far East.”
Graham Hunter, Daily Express

Want to know reasons Becks will go? Just to look at Ince
The David Beckham transfer saga bears a number of remarkable parallels to Sir Alex Ferguson’s controversial sale of Paul Ince in the summer of 1995. Ferguson believed Ince had gone beyond his control, was getting too big for his boots and had outlived his usefulness to the team. He also harboured deep suspicions that the player and his representatives were engineering a move to Inter Milan behind Manchester United’s back. The same factors would appear to be behind Ferguson’s decision to instruct the United board to accept Barcelona’s offer for Beckham.
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

Spice whirl is a worry for boss
Sir Alex Ferguson claims David Beckham has been a changed man since he met his pop star wife Victoria. And the seeds of the breakdown in the relationship between the Manchester United manager and England’s highest-profile footballer can be traced back to the first few months after Beckham met the then Spice Girl.
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

All this soap simply won’t wash
There is at least one aspect of the Beckham saga of which many of us can be grateful. It has pushed Big Brother off the front pages. That said, the soap opera being played out between David Beckham, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and anyone else who fancies a cameo part, is becoming monotonous. But there is no accounting for the public’s appetite in devouring every morsel of this tasty tale.
Rob Shepherd, Daily Express

Even I wouldn’t sell off Becks
Peter Ridsdale, the man who Leeds fans felt would have sold his own grandmother, insists that if he was pulling the strings at Manchester United right now, David Beckham would be going nowhere. “If I was there I would keep him. I think he’s a fantastic ambassador both for Manchester United and also English football,” he said.
Matthew Dunn, Daily Express

Bangor put fear into David
David Beckham’s old pal Clayton Blackmore believes he will turn down Barcelona – because he does not fancy facing Welsh minnows Bangor City in the Intertoto Cup. The former Wales midfielder, who played for Manchester United between 1982 and 1994, has known Beckham ever since he was a teenager and sat on the bench alongside him on the day Beckham made his United debut nearly 10 years ago at Brighton. While Beckham has gone on to fame and fortune, Blackmore, now 38, is seeing out his career at Bangor. But the two could soon cross paths again.
Sports staff, Daily Express

Now get us Becks
Barcelona fans turned out in their tens of thousands yesterday to beg David Beckham to join the Spanish giants. The Manchester United star’s amazing pulling power saw Joan Laporta elected president of Barca with a stunning landslide victory. Now Laporta will step up his bid to pull off another coup by actually signing the England skipper in a £30m deal.
David Woods, Daily Star

Come and sit on your Barca throna
Barcelona will today beg David Beckham to join them and become ‘King of the Nou Camp’. Joan Laporta, who mswept to victory lastnight in the presidential race, will renew his efforts to persuade Posh and Becks that their future lies with the Catalan club.
David Woods, Daily Star

Angry agent blasts United
One of David Beckham’s senior advisers last night insisted: “Manchester United will not decide where David goes.” Jon Holmes, of Beckham’s agent SFX, said: “It is incredibly premature to say that David will go here, there, or anywhere, for he has been out of the country while most of the speculation has been going on.”
David Woods, Daily Star

A Real lack of interest
The 100 or so teenage girls who turned up at Madrid airport in a state of extreme but unwanted excitement late on Friday night clearly have high hopes that David Beckham may one day make the Spanish capital his home. As far as the coach and the players of the city’s premier football team are concerned, however, the continuing fuss surrounding the England captain is proving little more than an irritation as they continue with their efforts to win the Spanish championship.

Laporta’s success in yesterday’s election was followed by a bold statement of intent as, having agreed a £30 million fee with United, he vowed to step up his pursuit of Beckham by meeting the player and his representative, SFX, to discuss personal terms. Beckham and his advisers made clear in a statement last Tuesday, though, that they had “no plans to meet Mr Laporta”.

=>Beckham’s preference is to move to Real, who have been in regular contact with SFX since April. Beckham was even rumoured yesterday to have travelled in a private jet from Stansted to Torrejon, a small airport outside Madrid, to meet his suitors, but Jon Holmes, the managing director of SFX, denied the rumours. Discreet talks between Real and SFX are certain to take place over the coming days, but no significant developments are expected until after Beckham, who returned from a holiday in the United States on Saturday, has visited Asia for a week-long promotional tour.

Laporta’s triumph, which saw him capture 52.57 per cent of the votes from Barcelona’s 94,339 adult members, means he is now free to discuss personal terms with Beckham, who has been identified as the cornerstone of a football revolution in Catalonia. Beckham, though, is less than enthused by the prospect of joining Barcelona, where his next taste of European football may be in the InterToto Cup, rather than the Champions League.

Real’s opening bid is likely to be around £14 million, plus the choice of a player such as Geremi or Claude Makelele, in part exchange. United’s preference, despite their longstanding interest in Makelele, is for a straight cash deal and their bargaining position will have been enhanced slightly by Laporta’s triumph, which ensured that Barcelona at least remain in contention for the moment and that United can afford to keep their asking price at £30 million.

Real had hoped that Laporta would fail in the election, thus removing Barcelona from the equation, but their disappointment will be tempered by their secure knowledge that Beckham wants to move to Madrid. Another factor is that Real have, like United and indeed Barcelona, agreed a contract with the representatives of Ronaldinho, the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil forward. Real will agree to drop their interest in him if it enables them to sign Beckham.

The process is likely to be accelerated by the result of the Barcelona election, but Real’s negotiations are likely to be minimal until after next Sunday, when the Primera Liga campaign comes to an end. Their 4-0 win away to Atlético Madrid last night saw them return to the top with a two-point lead over Real Sociedad.

United, meanwhile, are being investigated by the Financial Services Authority after announcing their agreement with Barcelona last Tuesday on their own website. As a public limited company, their first communication should have been with the Stock Exchange, where their shares rose by 7p after the announcement.
