David Beckham will not sign for Barcelona – that is the opinion of his former United team-mate Clayton Blackmore.

Barcelona, desperate for European football after a dismal La Liga campaign, are pushing for a place in the InterTota Cup as a passport to the Uefa Cup.

Blackmore, 38, who now plies his trade for Bangor City, will also be competing in the InterToto competition for the League of Wales outfit. With the ties mapped out all the way to final, Bangor could face Barcelona in the third round on July 19.

Joan Laporta’s successful election as president at the Catalan club means he will step up his efforts to sign United midfielder Beckham, but Blackmore says Becks will be put off the move because he is scared of facing the mighty Bangor.

“We have two tough games first but it would be really exciting to play Barcelona. But I’m not sure David would like the idea,” Blackmore said. ”I honestly don’t believe he will sign for Barcelona – especially when he sees they are in the InterToto against the likes of us!”

Blackmore has also jumped to the defence of Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been criticised by some for what now looks like Beckham’s likely transfer away from Old Trafford.

He said: ”The manager always does what he thinks is best for United. If he can bring in three or four class players with the money he gets for David, then who can argue?”

" Laporta denies Beckham promise"

New Barcelona president Joan Laporta is denying that he promised to take David Beckham to the Nou Camp upon his victory in the club elections.

Laporta came from 26% behind Lluis Bassat in the polls to take the Catalan hotseat in a landslide victory on Sunday evening - mainly due to a pledge to buy Becks. Now in office, he´s saying that he never actually promised to sign the midfielder.

" I did not promise to bring David Beckham to Barcelona," he said in his post-victory press conference.

" I said I had a agreement with Manchester United that contained conditions. One of those conditions was that I became president of the club. I have now done that."

However, the 40-year-old lawyer is still confident of winning the race for David´s signature.

" We are waiting to hear from Beckham. We completed the first stage of the transfer by winning this election, now we will speak to Beckham´s representatives," he revealed

" To make a strong football team it is very important we have players like David Beckham.

" I know it is a difficult decision for Beckham and his family but I know he would be delighted to be in our city, our team, our country."

" Escude allowed to leave"

Julien Escude, said to be on Sir Alex Ferguson´s summer shopping list, has been told he can leave Rennes if a suitable offer is received.

Escude came close to joining the Reds last summer before a bizarre injury picked up walking his dog put paid to his hopes of a transfer. Now fully fit again, a United bid could bring him to Manchester.

" The current situation is that Julien will go if we have an offer that corresponds with what we are expecting," said Rennes sporting director Pierre Dreossi.

" But at the moment we have not received any."

Rennes, who signed Escude from Cannes in 1999, just avoided relegation from France´s top flight by beating Montpellier on the last day of the season.

La liste est longue et si jamais il part, avec les 300M FF minimum de son transfert M.U. est tranquille et peut faire signer le joueur qui les interesse.

mouais . ronny je ne suis pas vraiment sur qu´il a choisi entre le real el manchester . quaresma trop jeune pour remplacer beckham , et les autres sont a des millions d´année de remplacer beck . je preferais qu´on garde beck et qu´on donne un petit copain a ruud n´est ce pas makay
