<spoil>Hello everyone, voxanimus here.I wanted to talk a little about the Japanese culture and customs concerning the ritual of "exchanging sake cups," as a lot of it is referenced in this chapter and not all of it is as translatable into English as I'd like.
Throughout this and the last chapter, Barto and the others have been asking Luffy to become their "oyabun." That is the Japanese term for "boss," but it carries heavy connotations of "crime boss" and is used pretty much exclusively by the yakuza. I've been translating this as "boss," as there really isn't an equivalent English term. "Mafia boss" doesn't work because Luffy and the others aren't actually in the mafia.
Per yakuza custom, when a man is to become oyabun, and take on other men as his "kobun" (the word I've been translating as "underling"), both parties take part in the ritual of exchanging vows over a ceremonial cup of sake. The oyabun vows to protect his kobun as if they were his own children, and the kobun vow to listen to and lay down their lives for their oyabun; in fact, the kanji for "oya" and "ko" in "oyabun" and "kobun" are "parent" and "child," respectively. The mutuality of the proceeding is very important: normally, you can't have one without the other. Oyabun and kobun go hand-in-hand.
In this chapter, Oda turns this concept (one familiar to most Japanese people) on its head a little by having Luffy's underlings swear their vow of loyalty to Luffy in a sort of one-sided manner. Luffy himself doesn't commit to any responsibility (because he'd certainly be averse to anything of that sort) but his kobuns swear to protect him regardless. Thus, what is normally a "boss-underling vow" becomes only a "underling vow." This is why Franky and the other Straw Hat members find the other pirates' actions a little funny and strange.
The title of this chapter in Japanese is "子分盃," (kobun sakazuki) which literally means "underling's sake cup," but in both Japanese culture and throughout One Piece (ref. Sabo/Ace/Luffy vows as children) the ceremonial cup of sake (called a sakazuki) used in the exchanging of vows of loyalty metonymically replaces the concept of the vow itself. So I have translated this as "vow" rather than "sake cup" because the latter makes little sense in English.
Hope that helped shed some light on the finer points of this chapter, and why Luffy's underlings swearing one-sided loyalty is a funny/strange thing at all (to Japanese people). Leave your questions in the comments, I'll be around later to answer them.
Until next time.</spoil>

Oh ça va les quotes?
Impossible qu'il disparaisse purement et simplement comme ça, Oda l'a bien trop mis en valeur, on va forcément apprendre ce qu'il est devenu, je reste convaincu de ce que je dis ![]()

C'est pas le meilleur chapitre, mais il reste plutôt cool ;) Ca reste mieux que la fin de l'arc de l'île des hommes poissons à mon goût ! J'ai hâte de voir les nouvelles primes, si vous avez vos estimations...
