" TSN.ca reports Alex Kovalev wishes to test the free agency market. Montreal fans wanted the Russian sniper back in a Habs uniform and he still might sign but likely, he will move on. Now Bob Gainey has to decide how to build on this surprise team of youth.
Montreal fans are simply tired of the Habs not being consistent contenders in the NHL. Let us assume there is a season next year. There is an abundant of unrestricted free agents and with the new CBA, players will be cheaper one way or another.
Montreal has an abundant of young talent in Hamilton but most of them will still not be ready for a few years. If you look at Gainey´s perspective, he needs to add more depth up front in talent and size. He will need at least one more defenseman as Quintal is unlikely to be resigned and Rivet can be used as a minor trade commodity.
Lets take a look who Gainey can add at a reasonable price that should improve this young team with free agent acquisitions.
Please note that the politics of player´s preferences of going to the Habs or other teams have not been considered.
Teemu Selanne made $5.8 million last year and will have to take substantial pay cut due to his 16 goal season. A change of venue and playing with fellow countryman Koivu should rejuvenate his scoring touch.
Mike Ricci made $3 million last year and earned almost every penny. A gritty 3rd line center that will either make the same or a minor pay cut. A great leader and 2 way player.
Jim Dowd made $775, 000 last year and was a very pleasant surprise for the habs. He was key on the PK and there is no reason why he will not return.
Darren Langdon made $550, 000 last year and should make the same. He enjoyed his role on Montreal and did well as an enforcer.
John Klemn made $2.5 million last year and should take a pay cut due to his 2 goal performance but a nice +10 +/-. A sound defensive defenseman with a fantastic work ethic.
Lets look at what the lines would look like.
Zednik, Koivu, Selanne
Dagenais, Riberio, Ryder
Begin, Ricci, Ward
Sundstrom, Dowd, Langdon
Pleacknec
Souray, Komisarek
Markov, Klemn
Brisbois, Bouillion
Hainsey
These acquisitions will add more grit and speed up front. The defense is improved and Montreal overall is a little tougher without sacrificing team chemistry and the youth core.
