Closing Comments
Even if Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, The Getaway and True Crime didn´t exist, Driver 3 would be a disappointment. Despite a clear taste and talent for power slides, Hollywood car chases and destructible cars, Reflections´ overall design is hardly an evolution from the previous two titles in the series. More pointedly, the game is rife with technical and design problems. These run the gamut, from poor execution, sloppy controls, lousy AI, to a mix of old mission designs and trial-and-error designs that will turn any happy go lucky person into an irascible, unhappy grouch ( no, this has nothing to do with my experience...).
In a broader context, compared to those other games in the " genre," Driver 3 easily takes last place, thanks to a narrow vision and static game design -- on foot or in a car -- that just doesn´t excite me the same way it did in 1999.
7.0 Presentation
The dull story is presented well, and the menu system is revamped for better use. But the levels are often unexplained, and seemingly randomly completed.
7.0 Graphics
On both systems, you´ll see aliasing, shimmering and pop-in, but the excellent lighting and shadowing and the great particle system make up for it, mostly.
6.0 Sound
The voice acting is superb, despite the boring dialog and story. The rock-heavy music is better than average.
4.0 Gameplay
Simple levels are made difficult due to poor execution, mission designs are the same as before, with a few exceptions, and the " open" design hasn´t helped make the game any more fun. The AI is awful.
6.0 Lasting Appeal
What you´ll do is replay the same level over and over again, despite the relative ease of the levels. The mini-games might be more fun, though they´re all very familiar.
