Bonne lecture
( en anglais
)
This week Bungie released three new screenshots featuring the new maps that we’ve shared thus far as well as a couple extra shots of the Spartan Laser and the one Campaign glimpse we’re giving. In this write-up we’ll go into as much as you can see in the screenshots, but with maybe a slightly better perspective than the average bear.
Mind you, all of the screens and level designs you see here are completely subject to change. The models, the spawns, the balance, the geometry, the very nature of time and space. It may not be like this when you get to play the game next year.
https://www.jeuxvideo.com/forums/3-61-728832-1-0-1-0-0.htm#frp
Starting with High Ground, the first thing you’ll notice is the Warthog barreling into the base. It’s taken some damage, as indicated by the misshapen body all around the frame of the hog. The hog is heading into the compound, the door to which has obviously been opened to make way for the Hog incursion. The console to open the gate is on the inside of the base on the left side. there are a couple of ways to enter the base before that door opens. The Warthog’s objective is the base within the base, which you can see just under the right wing of the Ghost. It’s a command center of sorts with portable computers and screens set up inside. In this command center is the flag 9at least for the moment). The area around it can be driven in, so you can make a full circle of the command center with a Warthog. This is useful as you wait for someone to grab the flag, secure a territory or just to be a jerk and keep them bottled up.
Your eye may next be drawn to the turret on the top of the base. Mounting this at the beginning of the game is basically suicide as the assaulting team spawns with a sniper. The sniper spawns down by the beach where the assaulting team also spawns with a Warthog, several Battle Rifles and a few other handy weapons, and one as-yet unrevealed mystery. Once you’re relatively sure that the sniper won’t bite you, the turret is a useful counter to the Hog, typically most useful for taking down their shields before they enter the tight quarters of the base area where they’ll be more vulnerable to all kinds of grenades and small arms fire.
In the camouflage tower to the left and above the turret is where the Spartan Laser spawns. That does more than take down the shields of the Hog-riders. With a direct hit, the laser will obliterate the hog and all of its occupants. And ruin their credit history. The tower is vulnerable, however. There are fusion cores stacked up on one of edge of it, so a well placed grenade can be enough to ignite them and violently eject a laser-wielding Spartan out of that tower, possibly placing the laser right in the assaulting team’s hands.
The bunker you see directly to the left of the Hog is one route into the base which will lead you straight to the command center, about one crafty jump away from the flag. You can actually see this area in the middle of the open gate. Off of that platform, you can jump and grab the flag. Without support from your team, though, it’d be a fruitless effort. Even if you killed the entire defensive team right before hand, it’s a tough getaway without support.
Your eye will definitely be drawn to the spike grenade in the air above the Hog. For a while people were totally unsure what this was, especially early on when people only had scans and no translation. Guesses ranged from a rocket (a la the original Burial Mounds shout in 2003) to a dragon fly. You can see the spike grenade’s explosion directly to the left of the Hog. You can even see the spikes flying through the air in the directional blast (in this case, directly up).
Yes, boarding is back. Big surprise. What you might not notice or be able to tell from that image of the Ghost is that it’s received a pretty awesome graphic overhaul. It’s subtle at first but we’ve been noticing it more and more. The surface is now a lot shinier than before, the reflection on it is real-time, which we just tested by throwing grenades in front of it and watching their reflections. The lighting on the sides of the ghost has also been improved, as well as some of the particle effects of its hovering. Basically, the Ghost has been pimped.

The second screen that we’ll look at is the Valhalla shot. In case you’ve missed all of the coverage, the ATV that you’re looking at is the Mongoose. This vehicle was originally planned in Halo 2, but they were never able to find the right balance for it so they removed it. This time around it’s in, it’s fun and it’s got a role to play. It’s unarmed, but it’s fast and therefore pretty difficult to destroy. Also visible here is the new flag design, which is the UNSC logo. Someone asked me if it waves in the wind and the answer is yes, with tiny little ripples.
The mancannon, or rather the effect of the mancannon, is visible in the background. The mancannon is in the middle of the Forerunner structure, the Spartan in the air is on his way down and will land about 10 feet from where he is now. There are secondary mancannons on the sides of each base which, at one base, will propel you into a shaded area with some tree cover, and at the other base it will catapult you into a similar area but filled with rocks instead. These secondary mancannons do not send you as far and are actually more useful for stealth routes, whereas the big one sends you straight into the heat of battle. We’ve been finding that the spots that they put you in are actually very useful for defensive purposes, especially sniping. You’ve got good cover and a decent view of the base and the area in front of it.
Back to the Mongoose and its balancing. Like I said, it is small and unarmed, but it’s fast. There’s no easy way to take it out. You can use the Spartan Laser, but that’s kind of difficult as the laser needs to charge for three seconds before it discharges. While it’s firing, you’ve got about half a second or so to get it over the target. Unless it’s coming straight at you and even if it is, that can be kind of difficult. It’ll definitely take some getting used to before you can consistently hit a moving target with it, but then it’s all the more satisfying. The driver is exposed, so small arms fire can easily take it out if it’s cornered, but if it’s speeding past you, it won’t inflict very much damage. One of the better methods is actually sniping the exposed driver. They’re quick but if you’re far enough away then it won’t look that fast to you. A couple of body shots or a head shot will do the trick.
The Mongoose is very well suited to flag runs, as you can see in the image. A lone Mongoose assaulting the base will not often be successful, but if you have two players at their base and then steal one of their Mongooses (yeah, that’s the proper plural form, though I prefer Mongi) it’s usually a good bet for escape. Right now the Mongi spawn two per base and are set to respawn rather quickly. It’s something that the designers plan to keep handy for the players as much as possible. It’s insanely useful for getting to a place on the map quickly when necessary.
Battle Rifles spawn plentifully all over the map, one sniper spawns under each base along with all the grenades you’ll need. Right now, the standard vehicle load-out is a Banshee, Warthog, Wraith and two Mongi per base. The Spartan Laser spawns in the middle of the map, really close to where the Mongoose is flying off of that cliff. It’s tough to describe, but there’s another cliff about 20 feet across from it where there is a turret mounted. Between these two cliffs runs a stream. The divide has actually been significant in Team Slayer games, as one team will hold up around the turret while the other will crowd on the other side and the two take pot shots at each other with BR until one finally goes around to flank the other or dies trying.
http://www.bungie.net/games/halo3/SlideShow.aspx?Path=/games/Halo3&Slideshow=Screenshots&Slide=9
The final screenshot is from Snowbound. You get your best view at the Spartan character models in this one. You’ll notice the shotgun on the back of the blue Spartan as well as an SMG on the hip of the red, shotgun-toting Spartan in the air. The area in which all of this carnage is taking place in the back of what is referred to as "low base" while the other is referred to as "slightly less low base." You can see, in the distance, the turrets. We’re actually not sure if we’ll go that route yet. There was one build where the area outside of the play area was actually full of land mines (yeah, they worked). Another had an instakill zone. Sometimes it’s just the turrets. Either way, it’s not a good idea to go out of the boundaries.
Another small touch to the game that you can see from this screenshot is the way the Spartans’ feet and ankles adjust to the contours of the ground, or as Don King would call it, "inclination acclamation." Notice the pink Spartan at the bottom of low base, as the Spartan ascends, the feet and ankles angle up to accurately reflect how your feet would rest on the ground in that situation. It’s also visible in the tan Spartan just in front of the pink one. It’s a small touch, but cool nonetheless.
Two other things that we’d like to point out are the grenade explosion. Aren’t they sexy? Plasma grenades have looked awesome in both Halo 1 and 2; Halo 3 has in no way disappointed in that department. Sticking someone with a plasma grenade just got a whole lot more satisfying. The regular frag grenade is going off in the right-hand side of the screen. It also looks really good up close, frightening realistic (I’m sure that if plasma grenades existed, we’d all be talking about how scary-real they look in Halo 3). However, they are less sexy than the plasma ´nades because when you throw them at peoples’ faces they still bounce off and fall at my feet.
Spawning on top of each base is a Carbine and a Needler, which is actually a combo that I grab pretty much each time I’m up there. It’s great for keeping a distance from opponents. The Needler is ridiculous at medium range and the Carbine is pretty much the Carbine that you’re used to. Three plasma grenades spawn atop the base as well. Pretty much all of the maps have a plentiful supply of grenades right now because of the two-grenades-per-grenade-type limit.
The area beneath the base spawns a plasma pistol, a Spiker, tons of ´nades and is absolutely beautiful. You should see the translucent ice ceiling scattering blue light. The two bases are linked by tunnels under the bases. These tunnels lead to a room and then back to the bases. In this room spawns the shotgun and some spike grenades, there’re also two ways out to the surface from there, one through a shield door and to the ghost spawn and another to the trench that separate low base from high base. The shield doors are another new touch to the game. These doors make for some really fun and interesting confrontations. You can see the other player and what they´re doing but you can´t shoot them or really affect them in any way. It´s really rare that both players walk away from that instance, one is normally confident enough to walk through the door and get the kill or immediately regret their decision. The most interesting tactic used thus far is running through a door with someone directly behind you and throwing a spike grenade (which adheres to every surface in the game... except water) on the door as you pass through. If you time it right, you´ll be through before it goes off, but they´ll get a face full of spikes.
When you look at the screenshot, you can see on the left, just above the blue Spartan’s knee, a small tunnel area. In this area will spawn the sniper. Tragically, it is lined with fusion coils. If you’re going to grab the sniper, do yourself a favor and make sure no one’s watching or blow them yourself, else you’re in for a hurtin’. On the right side of the screenshot you can see the beginnings of another small tunnel. There are Covenant batteries inside this one, nothing else spawns inside it aside from each grenade, but again all of these spawnpoints and weapons are totally subject to change and likely will have changed by the time you get your hands on the game. Subtly or dramatically.

[ NEWS ] Les 5 meilleurs choses de Halo 3 ( quelle beau titre
)
)
----
The controls have been revised. There´s an entire new "sandbox" of weapons to balance. One of the buttons on the Xbox 360 controller isn´t even working in this build of the game. No wonder the staff at Bungie looked nervous when we walked into a room full of televisions displaying Halo 3 at their Kirkland, WA studio.
The Five Best Things About Halo 3
Over the last three weeks, we´ve been tasked with bringing a slew of information and finding different ways to present it. All of the information we´ve dug up, we dredged in a single day spent at Bungie´s studio. What´s best about the pre-alpha version of Halo 3 that we played?
The MAC6 Assault Rifle:
From the Halo 3 announcement trailer, we saw Master Chief carrying a new(ish) weapon. Like we´ve detailed previously, the revised assault rifle is the new starting weapon in Halo 3. Here´s what we said:
With the MA5C Assault Rifle, the clip-size has been drastically reduced from 60 to 32, and as a trade-off, the weapon´s accuracy at long-range has been increased.
The revamped assault rifle is a near-perfect addition to the Halo repertoire. As a starting weapon it is perfectly utilitarian -- it´s the intersection where balance meets functionality. In fact, the MA5C is so functional, it relegates weapons like the Battle Rifle to non-essential status in player equips on a given map. Sure, if you can get to a Battle Rifle it´s still worth picking up, but the mid-short range functionality of the Assault Rifle outclasses the BR in several respects.
More than just reducing the importance of the Battle Rifle, the Assault Rifle also minimizes the importance of dual-wielding because it allows players to be competitive from the moment they spawn, until the moment they are waiting to respawn. When the playing field is leveled across the core weapon sets, like with the Assault Rifle, it allows the power weapons to truly shine in multiplayer play. Unfortunately, the only "power weapon" we´ve toyed with is the brand new anti-personnel and anti-vehicle shoulder-mounted Death Star, the Spartan Laser.
Described as an anti-vehicle weapon, the Spartan laser fires a small red "sighting" laser to spot your target. While that laser is pointing, the shoulder mounted monstrosity charges for three seconds, red energy collecting in a swirling orb before ejecting a stream of certain death.
On Valhalla, the wielder of the Spartan Laser controls the map -- at least with the weapon set that was appearing on the version of the map we played. The team that controls the laser most consistently stops Mongooses as they skip across the map and Warthogs as they hum by toting flag runners.
Compared with a weapon like the Rocket Launcher -- its lower-tech cousin -- the Spartan Laser fits right in to the Haloverse. Visually, its art style matches the other weapons and it brings a more focused functionality to the Halo weapon sandbox. Because of its sniper-like functionality and vehicle decimating prowess, the Spartan Laser is a bit of a hybrid among the weapon sets. Unlike the Sniper Rifle, though, the Spartan Laser is held back from being totally imbalanced and broken (hey, Energy Sword) because of its small clip size. In the build we played, the Spartan Laser fired four times before the clip was empty.
Controller Evolved:
The nervous stares that greeted us when we arrived at Bungie were due, in part, to the changes Bungie is making to the Halo 3 control scheme.
Reload has been remapped off of the X-button and onto the respective bumpers. When dual-wielding, RB reloads the right weapon while LB reloads the left weapon. Similarly, RB replaces the X-button as the action button. Boarding vehicles, picking up weapons, everything the X-button used to do is now done on RB. At first, this change felt a bit iffy. There were a handful of times early in the day when I was gunned down while standing over a sniper rifle mashing X to pick it up.
After stumbling around like a newb, the controls started to stick. Having the reload right near the trigger frees up key real estate on the Xbox controller. With reload and fire being fingered by the index finger (in a classic control scheme) players can still look using the right stick, while reloading. Topically, this may seem like a small change, but it will lead to more flexibility in what players can accomplish in the midst of battle.
Bungie has freed up the X button on the controller for an unannounced feature that may appear in Halo 3 -- this build is a pre-Alpha build and it is entirely possible that the feature could ultimately be scrapped (but we doubt it will disappear). Bungie staffer Brian Jarrard said that the guys didn´t even have to "activate their X buttons" to beat us in the next-gen Humpday Challenge -- what kind of feature would you activate?
The Highest Ground:
While it lacks the novelty of Snowbound´s shield doors or the pleasant familiarity of Valhalla´s sprawling symmetry, if High Ground is setting the standards for Halo 3´s maps, we´re all in for a treat next year.
Smaller than H2´s Zanzibar, High Ground offers some of the same mechanics: A base, a gate to open, multiple entrance points -- and while not on the version of the map we played, an armory´s worth of weaponry for both the assaulting and defending teams. Frank O´Connor and Brian Jarrard detailed some of the new stuff on High Ground since we saw it last month on a recent 1UP Network podcast. Now, in addition to the Spike Rifles, Spike Grenades and Sniper Rifle on the map, Bungie has added a Spartan Laser to the base-team configuration. In a cave along the left side of the map (approaching from the beach), they´ve added a Rocket Launcher -- and there´s a Sword (now with depleting energy) in the small tube inside the base. Apparently, the new, non-terrible single-wieldable Needler is on the map, as well.
With the Sword, Rocket Launcher, Sniper Rifle and Spartan Laser on a map built for 8-10 players, there´s a load of weapons to keep cycling through depending on where you are and the situation you´re facing on the map. We haven´t really seen weapon options or the need to constantly switch weapons like this in a Halo multiplayer experience before. In past Halos, there´s been a particular weapon setup that works best and the game centered on acquiring those -- in Halo 3, that doesn´t seem to be the case.
Matchmaking Remade:
If you missed out on our Q&A with Bungie about Halo 3´s matchmaking service you might have missed on what´s best about Halo 3, period.
Changes like the call sign system, where players will have a self-chose identification number for their Spartan, instead of an image of a golden bee (think "L75") are examples of the little touches Bungie is adding into their matchmaking and online experience in Halo 3.
One of the biggest problems with Halo 2´s matchmaking system was that it didn´t have a similar functionality for Custom games. If players wanted to play a particular map or a custom gametype and couldn´t get enough people in the room, there was no way for players to find that game. It segregated Custom Games and Matchmade games, completely. In Halo 3, that´s changing. While Matchmaking and Custom games are still completely separate (ranks will only increase in the confines of Bungie´s matchmaking service), for players who just want to play Custom Games, Bungie has created XBL Public.
XBL Public is where players can advertise their custom games and then players will be able to seek out modes, maps and gametypes. If a player is looking for a Team Slayer match on High Ground, he´ll be able to find the ones that are available and they´ll be sorted by how good the connection to the match will be.
There´s a two-fold ranking system in Halo 3´s matchmaking. One is fueled by Skill and the other by Experience. Ranking up via Skill will advance your profile through a fictional UNSC (or possibly Covenant) military ranking system. Ranks like Private, Sergeant will be attained based on the skill ranking. However, while a rank like Sergeant may require a level 20 in Matchmaking, the next level rank might mean players have to reach level 30 -- what happens if they can´t? Well, that´s where the Experience ranking system comes into play. The more games you play the further through the Sergeant tree your rank will move. Your progression in the Experience tree might move from Sergeant to First Sergeant to Master Sergeant -- those changes will be reflected in your rank. There are two forms of progression now to (hopefully) discourage cheating.
Halo 3 is Closer Than You Think:
Bungie´s announcement of a public multiplayer beta for Halo 3 is something we haven´t seen in the console space before (public beta testing is far more prominent in PC gaming). The beta is currently scheduled for Spring 2007. What this means is that before you know it, you´ll be playing Halo 3 in some form on your Xbox 360. And what will you be playing? We don´t know for sure, but it´s safe to say that it will be more polished, refined and tuned than what we played at Bungie in October.
There´s still no official word on how you´ll acquire the beta, but Microsoft´s recent implementation of downloading HD movies that leave your hard drive after a certain amount of time could be a hint at how the beta experience will unfold. Could the beta be a timed download that lasts for a month before it self erases like the HD movies? Could it be distributed on a game disc (that´d be a way to boost a title´s sales, wouldn´t it?)? Will it just be a microtransaction on the Xbox Live Marketplace? Right now, we don´t know. What we do know is that a few months from now, we´ll be reading your impressions of Halo 3.

[ GOODIES ] Une BD Halo vs Gears of War

[ NEWS ] Tops Xbox Live : Gears confirme, Small Arms s´affirme
Source : Major Nelson
Top Xbox 360 :
1. Gears of War
2. Call Of Duty 3
3. Démo Superman
4. Small Arms
5. Démo Rainbow Six Vegas
6. Madden NFL 07
7. Démo multi Lost Planet
8. Call of Duty 2
9. Démo Tony Hawk´s Project 8
10. Ghost Recon 3
1. Small Arms
2. Contra
3. Uno
4. Defender
5. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
6. Street Fighter II
7. Geometry Wars Evolved
8. Doom
9. Pac-Man

Hey we were playing “Pimps at Sea” on Xbox Live last night. I have never had so many messages in one session before. I ended up attaching a USB keyboard to the 360 just so I could respond with either polite declines or hilarious jabs, depending on who was sending me messages. KP sent the rudest ones, I might add, since he was jealous. Of whatever we were playing last night.
Obviously Pimps at Sea is a codename for something else right now (Halo 3, dur). So when we do actually begin work again, on the epic life-changing experience that the “real” Pimps at Sea promises to be, nobody will believe us. The Bungie who cried wolf.
Anyway, we had a blast playing whatever it was, and were even able to get some stats. Think of it as a mini-Humpday challenge.
Here’s how it went down…
There was a very special Pimps at Sea Humpday last night, the first night in which players were able to take each other on in the Alpha. One of the playlists that’s being tested in matchmaking right now is Rumble Pit, which is the same as Halo 2’s except it’s set to four players right now. Last night a very special match occurred with some special participants.
Frankie- Frank O’Connor, Bungie.net Content Manager
New0001- Joe Tung, Multiplayer Producer
UNIDENTIFIED GAMERTAG - Michel Bastien, Producer
SECRETZ TAG- Anonymous Nub

Game: Rumble Slayer
Snowbound, normal weapons
Game Duration: 6:32
General Tone of Game: Tung-shattering
The match to end all matches, as a certain Scot might say, took place last night at 6:18. As you may be able to tell from my use of an actual game duration and the fact that I know what time the game took place, we do have stats being reported for these games. Reported to a secret location. Note that the stats you’re looking at were just sort of cobbled together with bits of Bnet code we had laying around. The scoring, ranking and stats shown here are simply not representative of Halo 3’s stuff, and should be ignored except in how they demonstrate the graping Tung received.
Frankie spent most of the game rockin’ the assault rifle. Most of his kills came from peppering his opponents while charging them and then getting in the melee before they could counter. Sadly, one of Bungie’s (former) best players, Joe Tung, got completely reamed. He got on a roll with a killing spree for a little bit, but couldn’t find a way to out-duel Frankie. Michel, our first unidentified hero also totally owned Tung. Joe’s pathetic performance was second only to SECRETZ, who was probably doing something important like running the studio at the time.
The match ended closely, but not really. Rumor has it Frankie let up on Tung just so that he doesn’t remove the assault rifle, melees and Snowbound from Halo 3. Truly, Frankie’s actions last night not only defined him as a winner but as a hero to Halo fans everywhere.
We also talked a little bit about the TV commercial this week, which is causing quite a stir. Here’s the details, as clear as we can make ‘em.
* The commercial is 60 seconds long.
* It will air during Monday Night Football on December 4th. Sometime around 6-ish, PST.
* That’s the US date. Everyone else will get a chance to see it soon.
* An HD version will appear on marketplace fairly soon.
* The commercial is a mix of CG and Live Action.
* It is not supposed to represent gameplay.
* It is supposed to show pure action from the Halo universe. Think of it like the Graphic Novel.
* It was made by Hollywood effects house, Digital Domain.
* Digital Domain did base its stuff on our in-game 3D models.
* It is packed full of clues and stuff.
* It is nifty.
* We may host it on Bungie.net at some time in the future.
To celebrate the commercial, which we do so love, we made a Halo 3 theme which will be downloadable on Xbox Live marketplace sometime in the near future. Looks something like this (although it´s subject to change).

We’re recording combat dialog today. It’s kind of a test pass to get the process ironed out – there will be some new technology and features in the way our combat dialog is selected, and we need to make sure that the technology and the process are compatible. The first test of combat dialog will be the Grunt, played by our very own Joe Staten. His dialog today will of course be used in the final game and next week, we’ll have a couple of other actors in to reprise roles. One of them is a huge fan favorite.
Writing the dialog is a fairly challenging process and has been eating up my evenings pretty ferociously for the last few weeks. You can expect the combat dialog in Halo 3 to not only equal the sheer variety and volume found in Halos 1 and 2, but to do cooler things in terms of how it’s selected.
You’d be amazed how much effort the programmers, designers and audio guys have to put into this stuff. Writing it, by comparison is a breeze. And acting it is even easier – Joe just sits there, drinking Cristal and having his feet rubbed by Salma and pausing occasionally to polish his monocle and squirt out a grunt line. I kid Joe, I kid.
Joe in fact just came back from a session, he’s on a break, but his voice is already wrecked. I asked him to give me a sample line from the dialog but his favorite line was a grunt giving away something really big and secret about Campaign gameplay. His second favorite was a Grunt yelling, “Oh no! The Demon. No wait, he not have enough rivets on glove.”
The good news is that Jay Weinland, our audio guru, has promised to give me a sample MP3 or two next week for you to listen to.
The sheer amount of rage created by the removal of the Team SWAT playlist was expected, and still unfortunate. Again, we don’t remove these things for cruel fun, we do it to balance out the population loads and for other boringly mathematical reasons. So we are as they say, sorry for the inconvenience. And it’s possible that Team SWAT will come back again. In the meantime, you can find more SWAT modes than usual in team training. We upped the frequency to accommodate you, our buddies. Also please note that it is in fact against the law to send death threats, even by email.
Steve Scott, one of our amazing artists, showed me a new weapon today. No exaggeration to say that it is the single coolest graphical effect I have ever seen. He’s busy trying to make the effect look cool from every angle – it looks amazing in third person, or even when it’s in your face, but needs tuning in a first person view to look cooler, even though technically it looks the way it should. Sometimes artists have to exaggerate things to make them more obvious.
And finally, somebody asked me what a Mister Chief theme would look like. Booyah.

Is Halo 3 Being Played Right Now on XBL?
What´s going on, here?
by Luke Smith, 12/01/2006

On the heels of this morning´s announcement of the first way to get in Halo 3´s beta, it looks like some folks might already be playing something Halo-related on Xbox Live. Several Xbox Live users, including some Microsoft employees were spotted on Xbox Live playing a new game -- Pimps at Sea (Alpha).
For those familiar with Bungie´s shenanigans, Pimps at Sea is the oft-used moniker for different projects the company has worked on -- and was also the subject of an April Fools´ joke a few years back.
When the users in question were asked about Pimps at Sea, they simply replied "What´s a pimp?" Considering the (Alpha) tag after the title, it seems highly probable that this is the first phase of testing for Halo 3´s multiplayer. And by highly probable, we mean totally 100% true. We didn´t even need to pay Encyclopedia Brown a quarter to sit down and solve this mystery. When´s our turn to play?
Sometime next year.
