Thursday´s deal sent Cliff Robinson and Pepe Sanchez to Golden State and Bob Sura to Detroit. Here´s how the teams will be affected:
• Warriors -- Pro: Golden State continues to add veteran role players to its roster as Robinson joins fellow new acquisitions Nick Van Exel, Avery Johnson and Popeye Jones. All four players have at least 10 years of NBA experience and should provide valuable leadership for the team´s young talent. . .. Con: Statistically, the 2002-03 season was Robinson´s worst since his rookie year. The 36-year-old forward averaged just 12.2 points and 3.9 boards while shooting . 398 from the field, but since the Warriors likely brought him in for more intangible reasons, this won´t be much of a detriment.
• Pistons -- Pro: By drafting Darko Milicic and signing free agent Elden Campbell, Detroit had already all but assured Robinson was on his way out. In landing Sura, the Pistons replace the departed Jon Barry with another versatile guard and situational scorer who fits well with with their defense-first mentality. Sura will contribute quality minutes off the bench to spell either Chauncey Billups or Richard Hamilton . .. Con: Their defensive prowess notwithstanding, the Pistons could still use another scorer with size, and this deal doesn´t address that need. Maybe Milicic is the long-term answer, but right now Detroit will need Campbell and Mehmet Okur to step up and provide inside offense

L´ailier Tony Massenburg a signé vendredi en faveur des Sacramento Kings pour la saison prochaine. Il portera ainsi les couleurs de son 12eme club, égalant ainsi le record de Chucky Brown. L´an passé, il tournait à 4,7 points et 2,7 rebonds.

Après avoir intégré les franchises de San Antonio, Charlotte, Boston, Golden State, les Los Angeles Clippers, Toronto, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Vancouver, Houston et Utah, Tony Massenburg va connaître avec les Kings de Sacramento sa 12eme équipe NBA, en 12 ans de carrière ! Il égale ainsi le record de Chucky Brown. Tournant à 4,7 points et 2,7 rebonds de moyenne l´an passé, il vient renforcer le secteur intérieur de la formation californienne suite aux départs de Scott Pollard et de Keon Clark. Jon Stefansson, un joueur ayant évolué dans le championnat allemand la saison dernière, s’est engagé jusqu’à la fin de la saison avec la franchise texane.

Décidément, Dallas fait dans l’originalité en engageant cet arrière qui tournait la saison dernière à 13 points et 2,8 points de moyenne avec l’équipe de Trier. Le roster des Mavericks compte déjà le Canadien Steve Nash, l´Allemand Dirk Nowitzski, le Mexicain Eduardo Najera, le Français Tariq Abdul-Wahad et le Tchèque Jiri Welsch. Cela fera donc une nationalité de plus pour la franchise texane.

The Indiana Pacers announced Wednesday they have named Rick Carlisle, the 2002 NBA Coach of the Year, head coach.

After his three seasons with the Pacers, Carlisle took a year off from coaching and received his first NBA head coaching position with the Detroit Pistons in 2001. In two seasons with the Pistons, Carlisle compiled a 100-64 record and became just the second coach to record consecutive division titles and 50 wins in his first two seasons ( Pat Riley was the other in 1981-82 and 1982-83). In 2002, he was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year as the Pistons had an 18-game improvement from the previous season. He led the Pistons to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 1991 in 2003.

After playing in the NBA ( Boston, winning a championship in 1986; New York; and New Jersey), Carlisle began his coaching career in 1989 as an assistant with the Nets. He spent five seasons in New Jersey, where he had the opportunity to work under Hall of Fame coaching legends Bill Fitch and Chuck Daly. Carlisle then moved on to Portland where he spent three seasons as an assistant under P.J. Carlesimo before joining Bird’s staff in 1997.

Collegiately, Carlisle played two years at the University of Maine before transferring to the University of Virginia. He was co-captain of the Cavaliers’ 1984 Final Four team. A native of Ogdensburg, N.Y., Carlisle graduated in 1984 with a BA in psychology. His interests off the court include golf, piano and spending time with his wife, Donna, and their two dogs, Moe Norman and Zoe.

Gregg Popovich, l´entraîneur en chef des San Antonio Spurs, a nommé, jeudi, Mario Elie, triple champion NBA, entraîneur-adjoint des champions NBA.

Elie, qui a remporté ses deux premiers titres avec Houston ( 1994 et 95), effectue donc son retour dans un club où il a contribué au sacre de 1999. Il remplace Mike Brown, engagé par les Indiana Pacers au poste d´adjoint.

« Je suis ravi de rejoindre un groupe extraordinaire de joueurs et entraîneurs, a déclaré Elie, qui a joué deux saisons et demie avec les Spurs. C´est une superbe organisation et l´endroit parfait pour débuter ma carrière d´entraîneur. Je vais beaucoup apprendre auprès de " coach Pop" et de tout l´encadrement ».

« Nous sommes tous très heureux d´accueillir Mario dans notre équipe, a commenté, de son côté, Popovich. Il sera de nouveau une pièce importante de l´organisation ».

Elie a joué au Portugal, en Argentine, en Irlande et dans trois ligues inférieures américaines avant de faire ses débuts en NBA à Philadelphie. Il a ensuite défendu les couleurs de Golden State, Portland, Houston, San Antonio et Phoenix. En 11 saisons NBA, il a disputé 732 matches de saison régulière pour une moyenne de 8,6 points, 2,8 rebonds et 2,6 passes décisives.
