I’m going to talk about Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden is one of the best-known, most influential et successful heavy-metal’s band since 1980.
The band was formed in 1976 by bassist Steve Harris in England. The name Iron Maiden is the name of a torture’s instrument that Harris saw in the film The Man in the Iron Mask. About twenty persons made part of the band before their first album. The original line-up was Paul Di’anno ( vocals), Steve Harris ( bass), Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton ( guitars) and Clive Burr ( drums). They made heavy metal inspired by Judas Priest, Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. They started their career in a period called British New Wave of Heavy Metal, because many heavy metal bands, like Motorhead or Def Leppard, started their career these years.
In 1979, they released their first demo, Soundhouse Tapes, and in 1980 their first album, Iron Maiden. On the cover of the single Sanctuary, drawn by Derek Riggs, there is a character called Eddie killing Margaret Tatcher. It is the first time we can see Eddie and he would become Iron Maiden’s mascott and be present on each album.
This first album was so successful that the band recorded a second album the next year, Killers, and then made their first world tour. The same year, Stratton was replaced by Adrian Smith.
Paul Di’anno, who had drugs and alcohol problems, was fired and replaced by Bruce Dickinson from the band Samson, nicknamed “Air Raid Siren” because of his vocals performances. The first album with the new singer, The Number of the Beast in 1982, entered the British chart at No. 1 and made them international rockstars. It is considered by many fans as their best album and a heavy-metal’s classic and contains three of their greatest songs : The Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills and Hallowed be thy Name. After it, they found a new drummer, Nicko McBrain, who came from the french hard-rock band Trust, and the line-up didn’t change for seven years. Their success continued with Piece of Mind and Powerslave, and songs like The Trooper, Aces High or 2 Minutes to Midnight.
In 84-85, they made one of their biggest tour, the World Slavery Tour : 191 shows in 24 countries during 322 days. They recorded their first live album, Live After Death, which is considered as one of the best live albums ever recorded.
Then, they released two new albums including synthesizers, Somewhere in Time and the concept-album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. After another successful world tour, the Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour, Adrian Smith left the band and was replaced by Janick Gers.
No Prayer for the Dying in 1990 was the beginning of Iron Maiden’s decline, even if Fear of the Dark in 1991 debuted at number one on the British chart and became one of their best selling. Then they released three live albums : A Real Live One, A Real Dead One and Live at Donnigton.
Then Bruce Dickinson left the band to make a solo career, and he was replaced by Blaze Bayley, the singer of the band Wolfsbane. They made two albums with him, The X Factor in 95 and Virtual XI in 98, but it is an unlike period for the fans.
In 1999, Dickinson and Smith came back in the band and they recorded Brave New World the next year. The reunion was very successful and the band recorded another live album, Rock in Rio, in front of about 200,000 persons. Their last album, Dance of Death, was successful too, but it has the worst cover ever made...
Today, Iron Maiden is one of the last hard-rock’s giants, but fortunately, they didn’t want to stop their career.
