also got pc gamer yesterday and I've read the feature-
Here are a few key points:
firstly, erm...I think what shire is refering to is a historical character who cut his own head off, during a charge, to inspire his men to bravery! kinda crazy lol
Well this is obvious, but its very early days for shogun 2 and they're still working on some specific design features, etc, but appear to have a vision of what they would like for shogun 2.
-CA, now with the technology and experience, want to make the game they wanted to make 10 years ago (I sincerely hope the regain what we loved about the original, but with new features, graphics, etc but without losing anything of what I consider to be a unique atmosphere).
-The game begins in 1540 (1530 in the original) and is 4 turns per year, 1 per season (orginal was 2 per year).
- castles/seiges, as shire said, sound very interesting and could be very exciting. Essentially, the design of Japanenese castle's were quite different from European one's- they almost wanted you to get through the 1st wall, basically so that they could kill you once you were inside. They are multi layered and sound more like a maze- do I go left, right or straight a head, not knowing what's around the corner, etc. they also describe these different courtyards, within the multi layer, but big one's- football pitch size- and you as the attacker would have take your route carefully, finding the shortest path possible- while the defender will choose which one's are best to protect and force you to go where they want you to go- where they are strongest, etc or I guess onto almost mini ambushes.
- night battles are back
- Generals- an emphasis on developing the skills you want- you will be able to choose what skills to develop, etc as oppossed to certain traits happening automatically, depending on your playing style.
- Hero's I think a lot has been said about this already, but just to be clear, on the impression I got from reading this- we know the samuari were very skillful warriors, but they were individuals who were transcended to lengendary status by turning a battle on it's own- they will be a great prescence and inspire others in the battlefield- such as the example given at the top of my post ! Although, that is an extreme example and not sure whether it will be in the game. But they will have ceratin traits such as being outstanding swordsman, particulary good at taking cavalry down, perhaps excellent bowman and so forth- the special abilities are not 'magical' or paranormal. Perhaps 'special abilities' could be misleading and are actually more specific traits of that 'hero' character- hm...perhaps an example may be that a hero charcter does everything possible to kill the enemy leaders- their officers or generals, etc. and they go around the battlefield with that aim in mind- the first over a castle wall, etc, etc. its about inspiring others in order to turn a battle, as opposed to being a one man army or being something mystical.
-shire spoke about CA wanting to make the AI better- well, basically they want the ai to be at a level where it won't be moaned about and are determinded to achieve that- (no comment, a part from I hope they're able to achieve that).
MP- sounds like this will be re-written from scratch and will be quite different with a 'new innovation'- they admit that mp has been a lower priorty in the past and will be given a lot more attention with shogun 2. ( I'm a hardcore mp player, so personally that sounds great to me).
Enjoy!
