Shaun Rogers is Very Excited About Not Being a Lion Anymore

"I have never heard him so excited."
Those are the words of Shaun Rogers' agent regarding the high probability that the Lions will trade Rogers -- probably on Friday, as soon as trades are allowed. Though there are also rumors in Detroit that Roy Williams might be traded as well and Jon Kitna might lose his starting job, neither of those seem likely at all, at least anywhere near as likely as Rogers' trade.
There are at least six teams interested in Rogers, and rumor has it that it's already a done deal with Denver. It makes sense that he's desperate to get out of Detroit; Rogers was a second-round pick in Matt Millen's very first year in charge of the Lions way back in 2001 (though it probably feels much longer to Shaun). The possibility of playing for a real franchise has to be liberating.
But it also makes sense that the Lions want to get rid of Rogers. One of the most talented defensive tackles in the league when motivated, Rogers is scarcely motivated. He plays with inconsistent effort and practically refuses to stay at a manageable weight. And though a new setting and organization might will be what it takes to spark Rogers to be the player he never fully was in Detroit, the Lions still have to bite the bullet and get rid of the guy; his time in Detroit is done.
