reH: So how did you get into acting? Did you start out auditioning for more traditional roles or did you go straight for motion-capture and voice overs?
Adam: I took my first acting class in high school because I was flunking out of French. I continued through college, and after, focusing on theatre. I helped create a theatre company in Fullerton, CA called Stages; that is were I really polished my craft. As far as motion capture is concerned I just kind of fell into it. I have a friend who worked for a small effects house in LA in the mid 90's. They were working on Godzilla and I did a half day of work in a very thick mocap suit with wires attached to a computer (very old school technology). Later on that same friend went on to work for EA and in 2002 he got me an audition for "James Bond: Everything or Nothing". I landed the role of Bond and that is were I met Reuben Langdon. From then on my professional focus has been primarily mocap and voice over.
reH: You’ve starred in quite a few plays. Do you prefer doing theatre over television? Is it more enjoyable being closer to the audience?
Adam: I do prefer theatre. It is a much more rewarding form of artistic expression. You get a more honest and immediate response from a live audience.
reH: Spencer is one of the most mythical figures in Resident Evil's story. Information in past games is almost always from second hand info or indirect sources. What kind of person is he exactly?
Adam: He is a misunderstood, caring individual. Who would want nothing more than to roll up next to a warm fireplace with a good book and a warm cup of coco.
reH: Did you get much creative input on the creation of the character?
Adam: My creative input was limited to the interpretation of the script. All of the choices that I made were based off of the scene that was given to me, and discussions between me and the director.
reH: In the trailer he sounded almost mournful over his past actions. Has he given up his ambitions of destroying/ruling the world?
Adam: Any sympathy that you heard from Spencer is all part of his twisted little plan.
reH: The trailer also showed Wesker killing Spencer. Is that really it for the character? He only appears in the flashback in the Spencer Estate?
Adam: We shall have to wait and see.
reH: You play a very wide range of characters, from the stoic Arkham to the zany Jester. Which type of character do you prefer acting? Do you like it when you have lots of outlandish movements or is it better to have characters like Spencer where you stay in a wheelchair?
Adam: They both appeal to me. Obviously for motion capture the outlandish movements work better and is more interesting for the gamer. I think what made the wheel chair scene really work is the fact that they added facial capture, so that it’s not just a static scene that is boring to watch. What I like best is a character with a lot of possibility of choices for me to make. Those choices can be physical (like Jester) or internal (like Spencer). The more that I get to create and contribute the more fun it is for me.
reH: Have you ever suffered an injury whilst doing motion-capture work?
Adam: I stubbed my toe really bad during a Devil May Cry 3 rehearsal.
reH: What does the "E" in Ozwell E. Spencer stand for?
Adam: Everyman... I really don't know.
reH: Do you play any of the Resident Evil games yourself?
Adam: Yes I do. I think it is a great series and I am looking forward to this release.
reH: Your colleague Ken Lally said that there was a very interesting scene between Wesker and Spencer that reveals a lot about the two. How would you describe the relationship between Spencer and Wesker? Mentor and protégé? Boss and subordinate? Father and son? Bitter rivals?
Adam: From Spencer’s point of view I would say the relationship is like the Emperor and Vader.
reH: Some of the characters are getting action figures made of them. Will Spencer have one do you think?
Adam: I sure hope so. It would be my first.
reH: Finally, is there anything you want to share with the fanbase, a comment/advice/anecdote/correction/criticism?
Adam: Thanks for all the support and keep up with www.myspace.com/mocapactor for videos and announcements of other games where you can see my work.
