=>"Beckham not the Real thing"

By Phil McNulty
Chief football writer

Beckham endured a miserable evening in Madrid
Manchester United insist David Beckham will not be moving to Real Madrid - and on a disappointing night at the Bernabeu it is easy to see why.

The brutal truth is that Beckham falls short of the genuine world class that makes Real the natural home of the game´s elite group of players.

Beckham was a disappointing onlooker as Real Madrid´s masters looked a class above Sir Alex Ferguson´s men in their 3-1 Champions League quarter-final first leg win.

While Ruud van Nistelrooy proved his pedigree with a brilliant performance in defeat, Beckham was a peripheral influence, and a poor one at that.

England´s captain may be the Premiership´s most celebrated figure, but it is almost impossible to see what he could seriously add to a Real midfield of fantasy football proportions.

Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo - who would presumably be the players under threat if Real ever seriously pursued Beckham - joined Raul in wrecking United´s hopes of a profitable first leg result.

It will take a mammoth effort by United to pull the tie around

And in Raul, the Spanish giants possess a lethal link between midfield and attack that proved decisive on a night when some of Real´s football was magical.

Beckham was not just a shadow of these stars, he was a mediocre by-stander who failed to stamp any authority on the game.

Zidane, Figo and Raul took the game by the throat after United´s early threat.

They took the game away from United with a heady cocktail of individual brilliance and a fierce team ethic that was a cut above Beckham.

This may seem a harsh verdict, but those who deserve serious consideration by Real must come under the most intrusive microscope.

And watching Real, it looked like their supposed interest in Beckham was more of a psychological diversion tactic to disrupt United rather than a serious statement of transfer intent.

Do they need him? Would they be able to offer him regular football?

The answer, on this evidence, must come in the negative.

Raul was a key influence for Real

United have tailored their style and personnel to the European game in recent years, but Real have moved with the times themselves and Beckham still has catching up to do.

Real may have struggled through the qualifying stages, but like all great sides they are hitting their peak when it matters.

It will take a mammoth effort by United to pull the tie around - a night which could be a proving ground for Beckham and any aspirations of his to be truly considered worthy of Real´s company.

But at the Bernabeu it was clear that if Real ever did pursue Beckham, it would be for the almost unthinkable purpose of him being a squad player.

Real were not just too good for Manchester United - they proved they may actually be too good for David Beckham.

=>Sir Alex y croit encore et met deja la pression pr le match retour !

=>"Ferguson remains defiant"

Beckham and his team-mates face an uphill task
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson insists the Champions League dream lives on - despite a 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
United face a massive task to turn around the deficit in the quarter-final second leg at OId Trafford, with England pair Paul Scholes and Gary Neville ruled out through suspension after being booked in Spain.

Raul scored either side of the interval after Luis Figo had put the home side in front as the Champions League holders unleashed a mesmerising display.

But Ferguson is clinging to hope after Ruud van Nistelrooy grabbed what could yet prove to be a crucial away goal.

Ferguson admitted: "I thought it was a fair result. We had our moments, and our attacking play was good in the second half.

"Real might be celebrating now, but it will be a different story at Old Trafford - this tie is far from over" ( un fan de man utd!!!)

"We got that vital away goal, which may be the best thing to come out of the night."

Ferguson added: "They mesmerised us with their passing and have terrific players.

"We had a few chances and could have done better, but they were bad goals to give away.

"If we score at Old Trafford, it will set the place alight."

Real Madrid´s England midfield man Steve McManaman admitted the Spanish giants were disappointed to have only established a two-goal advantage.

Match report:
Real Madrid 3-1 Man Utd

"We shouldn´t have conceded a goal, it was very quiet in the dressing room after the game," said McManaman, who was among the unused substitutes.

"United started defensively and looked to hit us on the counter-attack.

"In the past United have never given us so much possession. I felt they backed off and gave us the ball."

The former Liverpool star added: "I don´t know if we were a bit naive at 3-0 up.

"If it had finished like that the tie would have been over, but at 3-1 it is still alive.

"However, we´ll always fancy our chances of scoring."

=>UNITED IN FOR YOUNG KEEPER

Story by Editor 9 April 2003

More transfer babble.

United are apparently interested in New York/New Jersey MetroStars´ goalkeeper Tim Howard about a move to England.

The US club´s general manager Nick Sakiewicz said: ´Manchester United have shown an interest in Timmy and he´s quite a goalkeeper.

´They´ve asked us for some tapes of him in action and for permission to talk with him and get to know him.

´Things are at a preliminary stage and he´s just signed a long-term contract with us.´

Timmy is 24 and travelled with the US national team to the World Cup last year.
