=>le resume de vodafone......

United went down 3-1 against Real Madrid at Bernabeu last night to set themselves a mighty task at Old Trafford in a fortnight´s time.

But it could have so much worse after United had slumped to three-nil down just after half-time.

An early goal from Luis Figo and then two from Raul put Real in dreamland, but a reply from Ruud van Nistelrooy may just provide the chink in Real´s armour when the teams meet in the return.

It appears to be a tall order, but United have overcome similar deficits in the past and at least they are in with a shout. There were times during the game when even that looked distant.

Billed as the ´Clash of the Titans´ by one television channel, it would be mightily difficult to find someone in football who didn´t honestly accept that this UEFA Champions League between United and Real was indeed an exceptional occasion.

Quite simply this summit meeting at the towering Bernabeu fits into a category of its own with Real and United arguably the most famous pair of football clubs on Earth.

Real´s record speaks ( loudly!) for itself with the Spanish giants having appeared in the European Cup final a record 12 times and won the trophy on 9 of those occasions, including last season.

United, like Real, have fans in every corner of the globe but have somewhat under-achieved on the European stage. But for the past seven seasons they have been ever-presents at this stage of the competitions and are the most experienced team in the UEFA Champions League.

But it´s more than just raw statistics and facts that set this mega-contest above the rest. Their is an undoubted magic about the names Real Madrid and Manchester United and to have them together on the same field is rare moment to cherish.

Both sides lined-up as expected with all the big names on duty. United, of course, were without the injured Juan Sebastian Veron but otherwise at full strength. Real rolled out their massively impressive galaxy of players that reads like a who´s who of world stars.

A packed Bernabeu is one of the most awesome sights in world football, but United have sufficient experience of such matters and they showed that they wouldn´t be fazed in the early stages of the game. The Reds started confidently and had two really decent chances in the opening ten minutes as they went in search of a vital away goal.

Paul Scholes was the first to test goalkeeper Iker Casillas when he thumped a cracking low shot that the Spanish international did well to parry. And Ruud van Nistelrooy went close with a overhead after David Beckham had done well to get on the end of Gary Neville´s long throw from the right.

It was a hugely encouraging start from United, but in the 12th minute they found themselves trailing following a piece of pure magic from one of the jewels in Real´s crown. Zinedine Zidane provided the support role with neat pass, but it was singular example of terrific vision that saw Luis Figo pick his spot from the left side of Fabien Barthez´s area but curling a shot into the far top corner.

A few minutes later and United were lucky not to have conceded a penalty when Wes Brown appeared to fell Ronaldo. The Brazilian star certainly thought it deserved the maximum punishment but the referee, who nearby, said ´no´ and United breathed a huge sigh of relief.

And there was another bizarre moment in the 21st minute when Barthez, having taken a back-pass, clearly handled outside the area. the referee either missed it completely or misjudged it, but had it been spotted the chances are that United´s number one could have been on his way back to the dressing room.

United´s woes, however, were increased in the 28th minute when Raul, Real´s master marksmen, made the most of a half chance to put his two-up after Roberto Carlos had robbed Scholes. Zidane collected the loose ball and his instant through pass gave Raul the chance.

Four minutes after the restart and United´s hopes of reaching the semi-final looked slim to say the least after Raul had rifled home Real´s third goal. Figo was involved on the right and when his pass arrived at Raul´s feet he set himself before hitting a low shot past Barthez.

United looked to be staring into the abyss, but within three minutes they had engineered themselves a toe-hold with a goal from van Nistelrooy. Gary Neville broke down the right before crossing into the area. Ryan Giggs made a clean contact but it went straight to Iker Cassilas who managed to push it back into play. The ball stood up beautifully and van Nistelrooy rushed in to head over the line.

The goal did United a power of good and for the next ten minutes or so they were clearly the better side. Their passing became more precise and they started to ask questions of the Real defence.

Five minutes after van Nistelrooy´s goal United could have reduced the arrears even further when the ball arrived at Beckham´s feet on the right side of the area. The England skipper was perfectly positioned to strike but he pulled his shot wide with just the keeper to beat.(ET ME*** comment il a pu rater ca???!!!!!!!!!)

United lost Mikael Silvestre with a leg injury in the 58th minute, but with John O´Shea waiting in the wings it wasn´t too big a blow.

The complexion of the game had changed with United showing their more positive side, but Real still looked frighteningly dangerous when the broke up field.

It had been a much better half for United, but it finished with the home side pushing for the one extra goal that would probably have sealed United´s fate. As it was the game ended with Real in charge, but United were in possession of what could turn out to be a priceless away goal.

"Soccer-Real beat United 3-1 after Raul double"

By Kevin Fylan

MADRID, April 8 ( Reuters) - Luis Figo curled in a spectacular opener and Raul struck two virtuoso goals to lead Real Madrid to a 3-1 win over Manchester United in a sparkling Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Real, who won the European Cup for a record ninth time in Glasgow last season, outclassed their opponents on a night the English side will quickly want to forget.

The Spaniards, superior throughout, will be strong favourites to book a semi-final place against Juventus or Barcelona, but they may yet have cause to regret a 52nd minute reply from Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy, United´s sole attacking threat, headed in from close range after Iker Casillas had palmed away a Ryan Giggs effort.

The Dutchman´s 11th Champions League goal of the campaign, a record for an individual season, gave United a lifeline to take back to Old Trafford in two weeks´ time.

Their task will not be made any easier, though, by yellow cards for Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, who will both now be suspended for the return.

SHAMBOLIC DISPLAY

Alex Ferguson´s side scarcely to deserve to still be in the tie after what was a shambolic display.

History suggests that whoever emerges triumphant from the tie will go on to win the final at Manchester United´s Old Trafford in May.

The two sides have had three previous meetings in Europe´s premier club competition and each time the winner has gone on to lift the trophy -- Real Madrid in 1956-57, United in 1967-68 and Real again in 1999-2000.

Neither side had the look of champions early on, though, as passes regularly went astray in what was a nervous opening at a simmering Bernabeu, packed to its 75,000 capacity.

United did create a couple of chances, Paul Scholes forcing a low save from Iker Casillas with a snap shot and Ruud van Nistelrooy going just over with an overhead kick, but the opening goal robbed them of every sap of confidence.

There seemed to be little danger when Figo collected a short pass from Zinedine Zidane on the left in the 12th minute and shuffled a couple of steps infield.

The Portuguese midfielder spotted that Fabien Barthez was slightly out of position, however, and sent in a wickedly curling shot that crept in at the far corner past the Frenchman´s outstretched hand.

Real should have been awarded a penalty when Wes Brown bundled over Ronaldo in the area on 19 minutes but the home side did not have to wait too much longer for the second.

FERDINAND FOOLED

Zidane was again the provider, slipping a pass through to Raul on the edge of the area. The Spanish international forward fooled Rio Ferdinand with a backward feint and turned to drill a shot in at the near post.

United had one good chance to reduce the arrears when Van Nistelrooy was set clear for a run on goal, but his shot flashed just wide.

Ferguson´s side might have been in even worse trouble had Swedish referee Anders Frisk decided that Barthez deserved a red card for clearly handling outside the box.

United were indeed in a deeper mess soon after the restart.

Figo, advancing menacingly down the right once again, cut the ball back for Raul to fire a shot through a crowd of defenders and make it 3-0 to Real with his 43rd Champions League goal.

United were staring at a humiliating defeat but to their credit they tore forward and were rewarded within three minutes when Van Nistelrooy headed in after Giggs had taken a Neville cross and forced a save from Casillas.

Real had several chances to restore their three-goal lead but Roberto Carlos, Raul and Figo all fired wide from good positions as huge gaps appeared in the United defence.

For all their efforts at the other end, United could not get another goal back and had to be content with the glimmer of hope left to them by Van Nistelrooy´s goal.

Raul: Had just three half-chances during the game and converted two of them with lethal accuracy and some aplomb. ( 8/10)

Roy Keane: Left chasing shadows by the Real midfield. Once so influential for United, the game passed him by. ( 6/10)

--------------------------------------------------

Nicky Butt: Failed to close down Raul for the Real striker´s second goal and compared to his performance for England against Turkey very disappointing. ( 6/10)

=>bon je continue la torture avec le resume du match, version BBC....seront-ils objectifs?!

=>Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester United
Manchester United´s Champions League ambitions hang by a slender thread as Real Madrid inflicted a damaging defeat at the Bernabeu.

Real´s nine-time winners raced into a deserved three-goal lead early in the second half as the Spanish giants tormented Sir Alex Ferguson´s side.

Luis Figo and a double from Raul left United on the brink of a rout in the quarter-final first leg, as the magic of Zinedine Zidane inspired Real.

Ruud van Nistelrooy - United´s outstanding performer - snatched a crucial away goal, but they still face a massive task in the second leg at Old Trafford.

And United´s task has not been made any easier by bookings to England duo Gary Neville and Paul Scholes that rule them out of the return.

"We conceded bad goals but we are still in with a chance "

Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson

Ferguson´s men opened brightly with Scholes and Van Nistelrooy almost snatching a priceless away goal - but that early defiance evaporated in the face of Real´s first-half brilliance.

Figo struck a fierce blow to United´s hopes when he broke the deadlock after only 11 minutes.

Zidane, predictably, was the orchestrator as he released Figo and the Portuguese captain floated a right-foot finish over Fabien Barthez.

It was unclear whether Figo´s strike was intentional, but the effect was devastating.

Figo´s goal unlocked all Real´s magic and they proceeded to deliver a mesmerising master-class of a performance.

Referee Anders Frisk rejected what was a clear Real penalty when Ronaldo was clumsily hauled to the floor by Wes Brown.

And Barthez demonstrated United´s frayed nerves when he inexplicably handled outside his area after 21 minutes, but again Swedish official Frisk failed to see the infringement.

But the Bernabeu did not have to wait long to celebrate again as Real doubled their advantage six minutes later.

Scholes fatally conceded possession in the danger area, and once again Zidane served up the opportunity which Raul gratefully accepted with a left foot drive that flashed past Barthez.

Real were in danger of disappearing over the horizon, and only a brilliant save from Barthez kept out a trademark drive from Roberto Carlos.

The start of the second half provided little respite for United, and Raul took advantage of more defensive generosity to add a third three minutes after the break.

Figo was allowed time and space on the right, and when Raul was afforded the same luxury 20 yards out, he punished United savagely with a fierce left foot finish that left Barthez no chance.

United needed a lifeline desperately - and it was Van Nistelrooy who inevitably provided it after 51 minutes.

Iker Casillas saved brilliantly from Giggs, but United´s master marksman was on hand to score.

And he almost struck again within seconds, forcing Casillas to dive bravely at his feet.

Van Nistelrooy´s goal has injected United with a self-belief they had lacked before, and both Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville came close to reducing the deficit further.

Real Madrid: Casillas, Salgado, Hierro, Helguera, Carlos, Figo, Flavio, Zidane, Makelele, Raul, Ronaldo. Subs: Cesar, McManaman, Morientes, Guti, Portillo, Solari, Pavon.

=>Real Madrid - Manchester United : 3-1
