We ask ourselves which are the caracterisitics of the Gothic.
First, the gothic is appeared in the novel by Horace Walpole, "The Castle of Otranto", which has been written during the Enlightenment.
Several works illustrate the Gothic. There is the painting "The Abbey in the Oakwood" by Caspar David Friedrich, or still the myth of "Frankenstein" written by Mary Shelley.
A number of caracteristics define the Gothic like the characters, the setting, the elements of the plot, the effects on the reader and the aims of gothic fiction:
First, Gothic fiction involves characters such as monsters, demons, skeletons, specters, evil aristocrats, corpses, monks and nuns, mad man, mad husbands and father, monstruous doubles, criminals, mad scientists, knight, ghosts, psychpath, extraterrestrial, and monstruous mutation.
A setting extent with castles, churches, graveyards, old houses, medieval edifices, forests, desolate, labyrinthine streets, hidden passageways, magical worlds, psychiatric hospital and intergalactic worlds.
The Gothic has a plot with mysterious incidents, horrible images, life threatening pursuits, voracious passions, terrifying incidents, and superstitious fancies, (elements of the plot) which train fasination, emotional effect, chill the blood, exciting, provoke repugnance, disgust and and recoil on the reader (effects on the reader) which feed his appetite for strange events, subverting the mores and the manners and reassert the values of society for example (aims of gothic fiction).
To conclude, the Gothic has many caracteritics, and we can say that the Gothic has inspired Fantasy.
We could analyze the greatest film Dr Frankenstein, produced by Paul McGuigan, with Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy.
