Dante the protagonist of the devil may cry series usually you'd expect him to be funny, a bit charming, overall sarcastic and stylish, however this is not the case in DMC 2 because in that game he is a silent, reclusive, serious and self preserving. We see these traits in his brother Vergil, I noticed this and thought of the fact that Vergil is Disguised as Dante in DMC 2 or mistaken identity or perhaps it may be a result of the alternate dimensions seen in the DMC 2 Novel. In the Novel Dante is teleported to a different dimension where Vergil(as Nelo Angelo) leads a rebellion against Mundus with the help of Dante and Griffon, which succeeds and brings Dante to his dimension.
What if DMC 2 takes place in the alternate dimension and Vergil is free of Mundus' control and to protect this dimension, he takes on the identity of Dante due to his regret of what he did as Vergil. This would explain why "Dante" is so different in DMC 2 than he is in the rest of the series.
It would also explain why the combat in DMC 2 is less focused on style and is more focused on precision, and the next point is you may be asking is "why would Vergil use guns?" this is because he would want to replicate Dantes' style exactly.
It may also explain Dantes' willingness to enter the demon world and face Argosax the Chaos, this would be because Vergil has already been in the demon world for at least ten years between DMC 3 and DMC.
So in conclusion I think that in DMC 2 Dante isn't himself but instead he is Vergil in disguise or an alternate dimension
