Post your system specs if you crash to desktop with no error on launch.
I have a P4 Northwood 2.4 Ghz
512 MB DDR OEM RAM
Gainward FX5200 128 MB DDR
We know of the crash to desktop with NO error
The invalid property error
The memory reference could not be ´read´ error
Post if you had it working before then it happened. Anything you did to get it working. How can you recreate the error if you fixed it. etc.
This appeared to happen on all Windows platforms or at least 2k and XP. It seems to be impartial to video card manufacturers and drivers. The problem most likely lies in some kind of video setting.
Uninstalling and re downloading does NOT appear to fix the problem.
EDIT: Everyone deleted your source inside SteamApps folder and run it from Steam to rebuild from cache. I´ve heard this from a lot of people.
SOLUTION: DELETE YOUR SOURCE FOLDER AND RUN THE GAME TO REBUILD IT. WORKED FOR ME. You do not uninstall steam or delete the gcf. Delete the Source Beta folder under your SteamApps only and run the game again. This has fixed CTD with no error, invalid property. The memory reference seems to be a server side problem because I got it, ran the game again and got into a game fine.

SOLUTION 2: enter ´-w 1024 -h 768´ ( w/o the quotes) as the command line parameters of the properties.
Steam, right click source, properties, launch options.
Credit to the bond guy... I´m bad with names.
NEW: Bad fonts display after ALT + TAB or map change.
