EA Sports to tone down NHL 2006

Maybe a bit too " realistic" for some.

WHAM! recently sat down with David Littman, Associate Producer on NHL 2005 and had a chance to discuss some of the concerns that arose over this years annual hockey refresh and the changes that were on the way for next years edition.

While of course the majority of changes to 2006 will be the usual roster, graphics and sound updates, EA Sports always throws in several new features that try to increase the playability of their newest game as compared to the past ones.

For 2005 some of the biggest changes were the addition of a wrap-around shot that you could pull off from behind the net, and separate buttons for a slapshot vs. a wristshot. With 2006 EA Sports is looking to increase the playability to a wider audience while not detracting from their current fanbase. Look for features like " free style control" that are already in their NBA franchise to be included.

But speaking of playability, one of the largest complaints gamers have had with NHL 2005, or even 2004 for that matter is that although EA Sports was including things like the Dynasty Mode to increase the sim aspect of the game, overall the play of the actual hockey was getting more arcade-like. Players were finding that open ice was just hard to find and the hitting was just too frequent, almost to the level of it playing in a NHL Hitz style.

" I agree and I do think there is too much hitting," said David when confronted with the allegations. " But it’s pretty damn realistic. Because if you just skated up the boards in the NHL without doing any cool moves, you’re gonna get hit."

In response to the feedback they’ve received from the gaming community EA Sports is already working on toning the hitting back in 2006. " We are listening to the public. Maybe the realism may not be exactly what people want, so we’re currently redoing our whole hitting system."

You heard it here first NHL fans, if the last few years left a sour taste in your mouth then next years edition may be right up your alley... err, rink.
