Readers of one tabloid were asked in a poll whether they would prefer ‘Mavis The Donkey’ or James in goal after his error presented Austria with the equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 draw. The poll claimed that 95 per cent of readers would prefer Mavis between the posts and then before the game cut-out donkey ears were handed out to fans to wear.
