Ronaldo nears new deal
Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to sign a new Manchester United contract upon his return to training.
The Portugal international has been locked in talks regarding a bumper new deal at Old Trafford for several months.
Ronaldo has proved to be a major hit with The Red Devils since joining the club as a teenager from Sporting Lisbon two years ago.
He is currently under contract until 2008 but has been seeking a reward for his progress which would elevate him among the top earners at the club.
His agent admitted earlier this week that the 20-year-old was chasing a hefty wage hike and there have been rumours that discussions concerning an extension have stalled.
Real Madrid have been stalking the exciting winger, with Bernabeu coach Wanderley Luxemburgo a confirmed admirer of Ronaldo.
But the nimble-footed wide man is set to hand the Premiership giants a boost by penning his extension when he starts pre-season training.
United chief executive David Gill has revealed an accord is close to being struck and he expects Ronaldo to sign the terms in the coming fortnight.
" We have just about reached agreement on a new contract," said Gill, with the deal likely to tie Ronaldo to Old Trafford until 2010.
" He will be staying at the club.
" It will be finalised when Cristiano returns at the end of June."
