ONLY THE " GOOD" WILL TRADE?
The only news surrounding the 4:00 p.m. EDT trading deadline is the lack of any trades.
So in order to fill up the space on this here site, all we can do is talk some more about why trades aren´t going down.
A league source explained to us on Tuesday morning that one of the reasons for the lack of any deals is that teams who don´t expect to make it to the postseason anyway are unwilling to sacrifice future picks in order to improve by a game or two on an otherwise crappy season.
Per the source, several teams have expressed interest in available players, acknowledging that a given player could help them in the short term. But the teams simply weren´t willing to give up draft picks that could help them in the long term.
The reasoning makes some sense, especially as to players who are coming close to free agency. Why forfeit the ability to reel in a rookie who´ll be around for at least three seasons for a guy who is under contract only for another year or so?
As a result, only the teams who are looking to get better for the playoff run are interested in making deals. And even then it´s just too hard for them to find partners who have the players and who likewise are willing to pull the trigger.
Here´s another thought, that we haven´t gotten ( yet) from any league insider -- teams might not be pulling the trigger for fear that they´ll look bad if the player whom they ship to another city blossoms.
In baseball, quality players get moved all the time from the also-rans to the contenders. It´s part of the culture. So if the guy plays well in his new home, no one ever looks unfavorably upon the team that dealt him.
In football, there seems to be a much greater fear that the traded player will turn into a star. Guys in the NFL typically don´t end up on the trading block unless they´ve worn out their welcome. So if Johnny G.M. gives up on Tommy Turd and he ends up playing well on national television in January, Johnny G.M. might look foolish in the eyes of Orville Owner.
