Tetsuo “Ted” Tanabe was born in Nagoya City, Aichi on November 5, 1962. Tanabe began his refereeing career in 1987 for Japan Joshi Pro-Wrestling, but he had been in the business for some time before that having held front desk positions for Kokusai Pro-Wrestling and All Japan Pro-Wrestling. From there, Tanabe refereed for FMW before joining in the launch of Gran Hamada’s Universal Pro-Wrestling in 1990. In 1992, he once more helped with the launch of another promotion, this time Michinoku Pro-Wrestling. The Great Sasuke recalls that Ted was not doing this for the money, but rather to see “Masa’s dream” come to fruition.
