This article, which deals with the lyrics of Immortal, was written by my co-operative Jessica. I found it very interesting reading, and I hope we will see more of Jessica´s writings in the future.

A Perfect Vision of the Rising Northland

Immortal lyrics have received both praise and criticism in the past. These words crafted in English by these grim and frostbitten Norwegians are beyond criticism. Immortal lyrics are less literal and more figurative - where the subject in its abstract is less the point, but rather the feeling weaved by these words become the subject and the big point of it all. Immortal are masters of poetic euphony when it comes to conjuring the diabolical fullmoon mystical atmosphere they strive for, so it becomes a case where it´s not what ( literal) they say, but ´what´ they say - if you follow what I mean.

Immortal has often been accused for just taking words that sound cool and sticking them into a sentence, but I feel this accusation misguided. For example, someone I knew crafted the following scenario:

"Ok Demonaz, let´s write some evil lyrics"
"Don´t forget the ice bit"
"Oh yes, ice evil lyrics... lets start with SNOW"
"NO NO, Snow is not evil, lets have ICE!!!"
"Yes, much better, ICE, what is ice... FORESTS"
"Yes, you can´t go wrong with forests"
"Ice forests... this is a good start... but what about the mountains?"
"Oh, we cannot leave them out. Ice Forest Mountain!!!"
"Yes, and put in some winds!"
"Ice forest mountain winds"
"This is good"

For Immortal lyrics, it is important to choose the right words with the right sounds to put the point across, because the point is the mental atmosphere - they did not set out to be storytellers. But even more of the point is that Immortal lyrics, on the other hand, are not just one-dimensional with absolutely no deeper meaning to them. We have a very good example in Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism´s "Call of the Wintermoon", just on this: "I split my tongue for the taste of these winds". Traditionally it is believed in folklore that you split the raven´s tongue to make it speak dark secrets.

The atmosphere that Immortal creates with their lyrics is one of the age of death and isolation associated with the northern winters. In the frost and ice, devastation and grimness is all that exists. Searching for the menacing side of nature even in its beauty, mountains and ice dominate the imagery of Immortal from past all the way up to the present. Words are not important for these unspoken entities; the image will unfold a thousand personal words to the ´audience´. From "The Call of the Wintermoon" to "At the Heart of Winter", Immortal´s lyrics conjure up the same imagery. Because this is what they feel, and feelings don´t change with time, they stay the same and true. As Fenriz said about DarkThrone recently:

"…We´re not like the type of guys to sit down and talk about where we´re going and why we´re doing things, ´cause we´ve been basically into the same vibe with DarkThrone for twelve years now. I totally trust what he ( N.C) will do with ( album) covers and everything as we´ve been into that whole grim thing for so many years now. I don´t think there´s any Freudian reasoning behind that, I think it´s all just trying to create an aesthetic that is DarkThrone… We just stay old and boring. We have to do that at least five more years."

I feel the same can be said about Immortal lyrics, if not ringing more truth to Immortal than any other band. With album titles like "Battles in the North", "Pure Holocaust", and "Blizzard Beasts" being a direct lift from the lyrics of predecessor albums, it doesn´t matter what changes in the musical structure of Immortal. Because the lyrics provide an anchor to their beginnings, their roots and their source remain one and the same. This goes further than just the crafting of their lyrics. As satanic as the beginnings of their writings began, they didn´t escape their Norse roots:

"As a Norse warrior I rode the dark valleys, With longsword in hand sworn to throne dark lands, And to return to my master in the blue mist of the dying sunset" - D.F.M., or "Mighty were they the fathers of Norsemen, And in us they shall return" - B.I.T.N. Immortal will always stick to their roots, they will as well as DarkThrone stay old and boring.

The one lyric that confuses a lot of people is the one word "Blashyrkh". There is much mysticism surrounding this one word, which seems to have no literal meaning in English or Norwegian. There has been a rumour of a Mount Blashyrkh´s existence, though that has yet to be confirmed if it indeed exists at all. And if it does exist, what makes it so significant? My theory, an admittably far-fetched one, is that it is indeed a made-up word, derived from the Norsk words ´Blass´ ( meaning pale), and ´Hyl´ ( meaning howl), with the ending -ic making the word mean "the act of pale/empty howls". And it makes sense should this be the case, then the word blashyrkh could well be synonymous to vicious winds. In the nebular ravens winter, winds are known from where they blow. If raven wings fly upon winds, and "death rides on black wings", then indeed under the banner of the blashyrkh we ride!

How much more there is to write about their lyrics I know not of, but I hail Demonaz for being the true black metal ( /holocaust metal) bastard behind it all, for creating this immortal vision… "On the hillside where I stood, I left for another world, Tragedies blows at the horizon, The sun freezes to dust… A perfect vision of the rising Northland."
