Q: Do I need SimCity installed in order to use the Lot Editor?
A: Yes, the Lot Editor will display error messages if you try and run it without an installed copy of SimCity 4.

Q: Is there a manual for the Lot Editor?
A: Yes, a manual is included in the Lot Editor download. After installing the Lot Editor tool, go to Start -> Program Files -> Maxis -> SimCity4 -> Lot Editor Manual. This should provide you with a basic overview of how the tool works, and will often be the quickest was to find a solution to a problem or question.

Q: When I try and run the Lot Editor, I get an error message that says " Cannot Initialize Graphics Card." How can I fix this?
A: First try running the lot editor in full screen mode - right click on the Lot Editor shortcut icon, which you should find on the desktop, and select Properties. Make sure that the Shortcut tab is selected, and find the Target field. In the field after the path to the program, add a space, and then -f. This should correct the problem. .

If this does not work, you may need to run the program using the software graphics renderer. If you have downloaded the Lot Editor prior to July 3rd, please download our latest version of the software from the site, and re-install the program. After it´s installed, edit your Lot Editor shortcut as above, but type in -d:soft instead of -f. If you´ve downloaded the Lot Editor on July 3rd or after, you don´t need to download a new version to use the -d:soft.

Q: This sounds confusing. Can you show me an image?
A: Certainly
http://simcity.ea.com/images/coolstuff/loted_cmmdline.gif
Notice the -f that has been added to the target field.

Q: How can I learn more about Command Line Editing?
A: There is an entire section devoted to Command Line Editing in the Lot Editor manual. In fact, the manual included in the latest build of the Lot Editor contains a revised, more comprehensive section on Command Line Editing.

Q: Is it possible to have two or more buildings on a single lot?
A: Yes, we have posted a . dat file that treats all buildings as if they were props, which allows multiple buildings to be placed on a single lot. You can find it linked off the Lot Editor download page.

Q: Why can´t I see the entire program? Is it made for a certain screen size?
A: The default screen size is 800x600. If this doesn´t fit on your screen, you should increase the resolution of your display, or start the lot editor with the -f command line switch.

Q: How do you increase the size of the 3d and side views?
A: The width of the 3d view is fixed to be the same width as the tool panel. You can increase the height of the 3D window and the size of the 2D window by increasing the overall resolution of the main window using the -r command line switch ( eg. -r1280x1024).

Q: How can I change the Growth Stage of a certain building in the Lot Editor?
A: Growth stage is calculated from a combination of the building´s capacity and the area of the lot. Since you cant change the capacity of a building in the lot editor, you should change the dimensions of the lot to affect the growth stage.

Q: Is there a ´Snap To Grid´ feature in the Lot Editor Tool?
A: There is no feature like this supported in the Lot Editor, presently.

Q: How can I rotate the props in the Lot Editor Tool?
A: Props can be rotated by using the CTRL + Page Up/Page Down keys on your keyboard.

Q: What do the little green SIMS diamonds mean?
A: These represent effects such as seagulls, fireworks, crowds of sims and many other animated effects found in the props menu.

Q: Can we change the effects of the lots, like the desirability and such with the new lot editor?
A: Presently, no. You can affect the growth stage that a lot will appear at. Growth stage is determined from a combination of the capacity of the main building and the area of the lot, so changing the area of a lot or changing the main building will affect the growth stage.

Q: Can the Lot Editor allow me to create new Reward Buildings?
A: Currently, it is not possible to create new reward buildings with the Lot Editor. However, you are able to modify existing landmarks and replace them.

Q: Can lots be any size one chooses?
A: Plopable lots can be as big as 64 x 64 tiles. This is effectively 1/4th the size of a medium-sized city. Simulator lots are restricted to 6x6 tiles. Lots larger than that will not be used by the simulator. Even then, it won´t use 6x6 lots very often. If you want your lot to appear more often by the simulator, it´s best to keep them fairly small. Use the sizes of the game lots as a guide.

Q: How do you delete objects already on the lot?
A: Simply choose the tool tab for the object type you want to delete. Then select the asset ( building, prop, effect, etc) that you would like to delete, and hit the delete key on your keyboard.

Q: How do I undo changes to my lots?
A: If you modified a game lot and you want it to go back to the way it was before, open the user plug-ins folder and find the sc4lot file with the name of the lot you modified. Delete the lot, or move it out of that folder. Basically, to revert SimCity back to its original install state you can remove all the plug-ins from the user plug-in directory.

Q: Why doesn´t the " Save As" tool work for some lots?
A: There are certain lot types for which the ´save as´ feature is disabled. This is because for these types, there is other data that needs to be modified in order to make the game use them. If ´save as´ were enabled, the game would not use them. Editing these data is beyond the scope of the lot editor tool. We hope to include this functionality in a future tool.

Q: Can you use the tool to add lots to the game, rather than overwriting them?
A: Rather than saving over a lot, use the Save As button found in the tool panel to create a unique filename for lots.

Q: How do I create an entirely new lot to play with?
A: Create an entirely new lot by deleting all the assets on a lot, adding new assets as you see fit, and then use the Save As command to save the lot with a new file name.

Q: How do I get the lot I made into the game itself?
A: You shouldn´t need to do anything. Once you´ve saved it and re-started the game, it will be available in game. If it is an RCI lot, you have to wait till the type of zone it was created for develops. If it is a plopable, it should be available it the building catalog for the type of building you made.

Q: How do you change the elevation of props?
A: You can modify prop elevation by using CTRL + UP/DOWN arrow keys on your keyboard.

J espere que ces messages vous seront d une grande utilité :-)
