il parle d´un projet très interessant sur la wii.
Wii - The Real Project Dolphin?
Over seven years ago, Nintendo was developing a new console known as Project Dolphin. Dolphin was seen to be the most technologically advanced video game system at the time that easily outperformed the Playstation 2 in every area. It was also a project which had several developers drooling over the prospect of developing beautiful looking titles especially on a medium that would work well.
It was also a time when talk of a new control scheme took place. Sega for example, would later speak about how Nintendo was planning a motion-sensing/revolutionary controller and it was known that they had a great deal of respect for the company’s innovation. Of course this wouldn’t be the case as “lunch-box” toy later appeared in the shadow of Dolphin, known as the Nintendo Gamecube.
Although the Dolphin CPU was set at 400Mhz, compared to the Gamecube the Dolphin GPU was 38Mhz faster with the memory transfer rate at 3.2GB/sec (600MB/sec faster) and it would boast a 4.7GB DVD disc drive to fit 12cm discs (Gamecube used 8cm 1.5GB discs). In addition to the specs, the system would be capable of playing DVD movies.
Recall back at E3-2005 when Nintendo revealed that DVD movie playback was offered with the Revolution (now called the Wii) and that single-layer (4.7GB) and dual-layer (8.5GB) DVD discs would be used. Although the DVD movie playback is now scrapped the motion-sensing concept that may have possible originate back in the Dolphin days was revealed at TGS-2005 to be the real Revolution.
It was also known that the Dolphin would connect users to the internet so gamers can play online games and in addition to that, Nintendo filed a patent showing off instant messaging. While Gamecube offered an “opportunity”, Nintendo decided it wasn’t the right time to support online games. However with the Wii, not only will online games be strongly supported by the company but they will also offer a “message board” type of service which in many ways could be related to the instant messaging patent.
So could it be that Nintendo’s Revolution was originally the Dolphin? Or is this just simply a coincidence? Overall the Dolphin could have been something great; DVD playback would have been huge at the time and developers would most likely have supported the console heavily especially with a cheaper medium. Unfortunately the Gamecube became something of a disaster from a market point of view, but with the Wii, let’s hope they get things right.
